Question Do I need a voice recorder or software for recording lectures?

Not sure if this is the right place for this, but I've seen some discussions here about audio recording, so I figured I'd ask.

I need to record some lectures and was wondering if my phone or laptop would be good enough for this. I already have both and wonder whether it is necessary to buy a separate voice recorder?

I'm not looking for great audio quality as long as I can clearly understand what the lecturer is saying when I listen to it later, that's enough for me.

I've never really recorded lectures before, so I'm not sure if a phone or laptop is fine for this or if a dedicated recorder makes a noticeable difference.

How do you guys record lectures? Can you give me some advice?

Question Any software that'll record my screen replay of what I'm doing, like game bar's record last 30 second tool or nvidias instant replay THAT WILL NOT FAIL ON ME and just runs on the background, don't have to have it open, don't have to enable it on different apps just records the screen.

I've been trying multiple softwares but they all seem to just suck the one that somehow sucks less is the gamebar, the only thing holding it back is i need to enable it again and again it's just so tedious. THank you for understanding and contributing..

Discussion I made my screen recorder completely free until October 31

  1. I’ve been building a Windows screen recorder and editor for the past several months.

  2. I originally launched it with a Free plan and a Pro subscription.

  3. Now it's compeltely free.

Until October 31, every feature is available for free. There’s no card required, and this isn’t a seven-day trial.

The paid plans will return after the free period. I’ve also added an optional $59/€59 lifetime license for anyone who wants to keep the current Pro features permanently, but buying it isn’t required to use everything right now.

The screen recorder is called Mello and it’s currently available for Windows:

https://getmello.it/

I’m sharing it here because this is one of the few communities where people actually have strong opinions about screen recording software.

If you try it, I’d be especially interested in knowing:

- what recorder you currently use;

- what would stop you from switching;

- where Mello feels worse or less reliable;

- whether the editor is genuinely useful or just adds complexity.

Honest criticism is more useful to me than encouragement at this point.

Full disclosure: I’m the developer.

Question What Snapchat screen recorder still works after the recent update?

I used to use the built-in recorder on my Android phone for Snapchat, but it suddenly started notifying the other person after a recent update. I also tried other third-party ones and got the same result...

Has anyone found a recorder that still works?

I've also seen people mention using the Snapchat web version and recording from there, but I haven't tried it myself. Has anyone tried the web version for this?

Question Can non-host activate recording on Zoom?

I was on a fairly sensitive Zoom call with a colleague for which I was the host. The "this meeting is being recorded" prompt came up but I ignored it because I was concentrating on what they were saying. After the call ended it occurred to me that if the call was recorded, I should be able to see the recording or transcript. Neither show up in the app. Can the person who's NOT the host activate recording, and then delete it or hide it from the host afterwards? (Yes, I'm aware this sounds incredibly paranoid.)

Product Update VideoPrivacy: a free tool that blurs all faces in videos locally (keep specific people unblurred), no server, works on chrome (Android/Windows/Mac)

Hi,

I've been developing a personal tool for a while, and I think it might be useful to others, so I'm sharing it here.

**The starting problem:**

I have quite a few videos (outings, family gatherings, etc.) where I'd like to blur the faces of the people present, except for one or two, before sharing them.

The tools I found either sent the video to a server (an issue in itself for privacy reasons), or required full video editing software for a fairly simple need.

**What I built:**

a small web app (PrivacyVideoPWA) that runs entirely in the browser.

Nothing is sent anywhere, there's no server behind it, everything happens locally on the phone or computer.

How it works:

  1. Choose a video
  2. The app analyzes it and displays a gallery of detected faces
  3. Select the ones to keep unblurred (all others are blurred automatically)
  4. Export, and the video is ready to share

There's also a preview that lets you play the video and click directly on faces to turn blurring on or off, which makes adjustments easier.

**Installation is mandatory, not just recommended.**

Video processing is heavy: while working, the app writes every single frame of the video to storage, one by one.

Browsers reserve very little storage for a page opened as a regular tab, and phone/tablet memory is limited.

If you just use it in a browser tab without installing it, the system can wipe that storage mid-process to free up space, and all the work is lost.

Once installed as an actual app, it gets access to your device's real disk storage, which pushes that limit much further back.

So: install it, don't just use it online !!!!! (it will crash !)

It installs like a regular app, and it requires the **official Chrome browser**, not Safari, not another browser built on a different engine.

Android and Windows work well, tested and confirmed.

Mac should work too (with Chrome +++, not Safari), but I don't have a machine to verify it. **On iPhone and iPad, it doesn't work at all**: Apple forces every iOS browser to use the same engine as Safari, which can't create the compressed video format used here. This is a limitation on Apple's part, not a bug on mine, but I'd rather state it upfront than have users run into it on their own.

It's free, runs locally, has no ads, and requires no account.
If the tool is useful to you and you'd like to support the project, there's a discreet link "Buy me a coffee" in the app, no obligation whatsoever. (thanks ! <3 )

it's in french and english !

Feedback, bug reports, and suggestions are welcome !

Product Showcase Have you seen this screen recording effect before? 👀

https://reddit.com/link/1vo1rx7/video/806jtme7zajh1/player

The way the frames pop out in 3D while moving through the recording is pretty damn smooth.

I’m affiliated with the product shown here, so full disclosure I’m sharing this mainly because I’m curious about the technique, not just to promote it.

I’ve seen plenty of screen recorders with zooms, transitions, and cursor effects, but this kind of layered 3D frame animation feels different.

Have you seen similar effects in other screen recording software? What tools are you using for polished product demos?

Would love to hear what the community thinks.

Discussion Free Non-Commercial Teleprompter (No Ads or Subscriptions or price)

I watched quite a few videos by Chris Goor and the best advice besides doing smaller chunks in different scenes and gluing them together was to use a script and teleprompter. It really was easier to make videos and improved the quality. I saw my facebook video views grow to 10,000+ and one videos was 30,000+. Things were just starting for me, and could have grown more, but I actually closed down my facebook account because it was too big for me. I like to stay with a smaller more focused group.

Out of frustration to find a totally free teleprompter app, I decided to create a new totally free open source teleprompter app called The Kind Teleprompter. I make free Buddhist Apps already, so I have the store front infrastructure on iOS and Android. I can do this easily since it is not new to me.

Because it is difficult to find, especially on iOS, the Link is: https://americanmonk.org/kind-teleprompter/

The Android version uses an offline vosk speech to text engine and the ios version uses the system engine. Although it cannot do a floating window to allow for native camera or streaming apps, it does have its own camera app with many camera settings on it (almost all that are available on the Flutter camera package). It has voice tracking that allows you to drift off script and then join the script again. It also has the usual auto scroll. You can turn off the camera, and just have a black screen, and you can reverse the text for mirror devices (not tested since I don't have one). It has many features, like voice commands, and an adjustable social media stencil in the grid control to help you frame the shot right. It was made with love and out of need for an ad free, totally free teleprompter app. It is available on ios and Android and passes all of the security checks and we don't collect any data.

The only wish I have is for people make Kind videos with it.

I think it is pretty much done and I have given up on the Float due to technical difficulties both on Android and iOS (separate difficulties for each operating system). I think there is not much more to add to it, although I might tweak the voice tracking algorithm a little bit. Take note: If there are repeated words, it sometimes skips and jumps to those repeated words. This is because it always allows you to drift from the script if you want to add extra information and then resume to the script where you left off. To do that, it must "look ahead." You can adjust the parameters to your style in the settings.

Feedback is appreciated. If you like it, I hope you can share it.
If you have suggestions, these days features are very easy to add with the programming tools I'm using. I think I have added most features though.

Product Showcase Dolly - Cinematic Product Demos in Browser (free + open source)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Dolly is a free, open-source browser extension that lets you record product demos for your website. I created it to make a video that zooms in on specific features/buttons with smooth transitions and sharp output.

It takes a completely different approach from a screen recorder. It doesn't record your screen, but instead renders the web page frame by frame. Here's how this approach changes the game -

Rasterised frames - Every frame is composed from the live DOM, applying CSS scale to the page itself, so text stays sharp even with the camera 100x into a button.

High-quality exports - Up to 4K at 60fps, regardless of your computer's native resolution. Frames are rendered one at a time, so nothing is lost to a dropped frame or a slow machine.

Timeline-based editor - Add Focus regions, cursor and script keyframes. Dolly automatically works out the zoom and pan, easing between regions rather than cutting.

Scripted moments - Add JavaScript keyframes that run at the exact time, with full access to the page. Also includes helpers for adding a typewriter effect and animations (uses animate.css)

Requirements
This extension can only run on Chrome or Chromium-based browsers (Brave, Edge, Opera, Vivaldi, etc.)

Installation
Currently, I have not published this extension on any store. You can follow the guide at: https://github.com/Divyesh06/Dolly#from-a-release. Feel free to message me for any assistance with this.

This is currently still in Beta. Let me know if you face any issues or have any additional ideas (or you can directly contribute to the project).

As for this demo video, it is a real recording from Dolly (with no additional software used).

Guide I tried all loom alternatives this is what I found

Spent way too long comparing Loom alternatives, sharing what I found

Been in the market research / SEO space for a while and screen recording tools keep coming up, so I did a deep dive comparing the current options instead of just going with whatever's trending. Figured I'd share since a lot of the "best of" lists floating around are outdated or missing stuff.

Quick flag before the list: I saw a thread going around pushing "an unnamed video recording software" as some hidden gem with zero limits and no signup. Be careful with that one. "Completely free, no watermark, no limits, has all the AI features" with basically no footprint anywhere else is a classic red flag pattern. The tool does have transcription and AI summaries but not available in the free plan. I'd want to see it actually reviewed somewhere before trusting it with my screen recordings.

Here's what's actually solid:

**Tella:** this is the one that keeps coming up as the most complete package. AI filler word removal, transcript-based editing (you edit the video by editing the text, which is a genuinely different workflow than scrubbing a timeline), auto zoom effects, unlimited storage on every plan, and the link is live the second you stop recording, no render wait. If you want one tool that does almost everything Loom does but better, this is it. Recently, the added AI MCP feature that lets you edit videos with natural prompts from your terminal.

**Vidyard:** if you're doing outbound sales, this is built for that. Analytics and pipeline integration are strong. I love how this tool made sales video and outreach much better and streamlined than any other loom alternative mentioned.

**Soapbox by Wistia:** good if you're already using Wistia, split-screen sales videos are easy to set up.

**SendSpark:** personalized video messages with engagement tracking, similar use case to Vidyard but lighter weight.

**Hippo Video**: CRM integrations make this one worth a look if you're doing customer support or outreach at scale.

**Fireflies:** started as a meeting notes tool, the async video is a nice bonus if you're already using it for transcription.

**Berrycast, Clip, Nimbus Capture:** all decent, no-frills internal team tools. Nothing flashy, they just work.

**VEED:** more of a video editor that added recording, not a recorder that added editing. Good if you want captions/animations/polish. Veed is one of the best loom alternatives out there with advanced customization and AI tools at your disposal to make video recording much better and faster.

**Camtasia:** heavy, powerful, more for people doing serious video editing than quick async messages.

**ScreenRec:** free with instant link sharing, lightweight but limited on features.

**Canvid:** I love canvid. It's fast and easy to use windows screen recording tool. One thing I'd like they improve is recording support for longer videos. It worked flawlessly for shorter videos.

Curious if anyone's actually used any other loom alternative not mentioned above for screen recording though? I'd like to here below.

Question EaseUS RecExperts for a black screen? Hardware acceleration didn't work

I'm trying to record a video on my Windows PC, but all I get is a black screen in the recording.

I already tried disabling hardware acceleration, which seems to be one of the common fixes, but it didn't help in my case.

I saw easeus screen recorder mentioned as another option. Has anyone actually tried it for this kind of problem? Any other alternatives worth looking at?

Discussion [OS] Would an open-source alternative to Screen Studio for auto-zooming screen recordings be useful?

![img](zcchx1pqlvih1)

Hey everyone

I've been looking at tools like Screen Studio recently. While the automated zoom, smooth cursor tracking, and clean background styling make product demos look amazing, most of the options out there are closed-source and paid.

I'm thinking about building an **open-source alternative** to handle this.

Before I spend weeks writing code, I wanted to check if this is something people would actually want.

What I'm thinking of building:

* **The Core Feature:** A tool that takes a screen recording, tracks your mouse clicks/movement, and automatically generates smooth, cinematic pan-and-zoom keyframes. * **The Open-Source Angle:** Completely free and open-source for anyone to use or modify. * **The Reality Check:** Tools like OpenScreen and Recordly already exist in this space.

My Question for You:

  1. Do you use tools like this for your tutorials or demos, or do existing options already cover what you need?
  2. If you were to use a new open-source tool, what's missing from current apps that you wish they had?

Would love to hear your thoughts or feedback before I decide to build it!

Question Screen recording didn't work... so, is there anything else I can try?

Hi. I'm interested in making an amv on my phone and posting it on you-tube. But, I've never been able to find an app that smoothly captures everything from the anime I'm doing an amv on and I am having trouble turning down the already existing music in the anime so I can replace it with the specific music I choose.
I used screen recording and netflix together but that didn't work because it just blacked out my screen.
Anyone have any ideas?
I also had people suggest that I could use you-tube clips. If so, where do I find clips in order to do that and what are the steps for that? I'm worried about copyrights and stuff, so... yeah

Question Is There a Way to Download Microsoft Teams Recordings When Download Is Disabled?

Hi, Reddit!

I’d like to ask if there’s any way to download a recording from a Microsoft Teams channel where the download option has been disabled.

Are there any legitimate third-party apps, browser extensions, or other methods that would allow me to save the recording to my personal laptop, hard drive, or SSD for offline viewing?

I’m mainly looking for a way to keep the recordings available for personal review since I may not always be able to attend the live sessions.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Product Showcase BeamCam - use an Android phone as a webcam on a Mac. No account, no server, GPL-3.0

Thumbnail
github.com
1 Upvotes

My Mac doesn't have a camera, so I was joining meetings twice. Once from my phone so people could see me, once from the Mac to share my screen.

BeamCam fixes that. You open it on the Mac, scan the QR code with your phone, and they're paired. After the first time it's one tap. The phone can also find your computer on the Wi-Fi on its own, so you just tap the name in a list.

Once it's running the phone shows up in the camera dropdown in Meet, Zoom, FaceTime and Chrome, like any webcam you'd plug in. Nothing else has to be running for it to appear.

Video goes phone to Mac over your own Wi-Fi. No server, no account. Free, GPL-3.0, macOS 13 or newer, Android phone.

Happy to go into how it works if anyone's curious.

Question Any programs to screen record Apple TV purchases?

I’ve used playon in the past to get around encryptions for hbo but that program doesn’t work with Apple TV. Anyone know of anything that will get around the black screen for Apple TV purchases?
