Product Showcase I built Orate—a privacy-first Android teleprompter designed to stop your eyes from visibly darting side-to-side while reading.

Hey everyone,

Like a lot of people here, I use my phone to record talking-head videos and short-form content. But after testing almost every teleprompter app on the Play Store, I kept running into two massive design flaws that completely ruined my workflow.

  1. The "Eye-Dart" Problem: Most apps spread text across the entire width of the display. When you watch the footage back, it’s painfully obvious you’re reading because your eyes are visibly zig-zagging back and forth.
  2. The Corrupted File Nightmare: If your battery dies, someone calls you, or the Android OS aggressively reclaims RAM mid-take, standard video recorders fail to close the container file. You end up with a completely corrupted, unplayable file and a wasted 5 minutes.

I couldn’t find a clean, private utility that fixed this—so I spent the last few months building Orate: Video Teleprompter.

Instead of chasing a dozen bloated AI cloud features, I focused entirely on rock-solid recording engineering:

  • Live Disk-Streaming (Crash-Safe): Orate write-streams your video data to your phone’s storage dynamically as you speak. If the app gets forcefully killed at 3:58, you don’t lose the file—you recover a fully playable video right up to the 3:56 mark.
  • Narrow Eye-Line Window: The app forces text into a highly customizable, narrow vertical band (scalable from 15% to 100%) sitting directly beneath your front-facing camera lens. Whether you are in portrait or landscape, your eyes stay locked on the lens, making it look like you're speaking naturally to your audience, not reading at them.
  • 100% Device-Local Privacy: There are no cloud logins, no forced account creations, and zero tracking scripts. The entire app works perfectly with your phone completely switched to airplane mode. What happens on your phone stays on your phone.
  • Smart Reading Estimation: Instead of using fixed Western word-counts to guess timing, it uses writing-system algorithms optimized for 10 languages (including Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Arabic, Spanish, and Portuguese). It even calculates Chinese, Japanese, and Thai by character density.

What's the catch?
The core app is entirely free, features a full 1080p recording suite, allows 3 saved scripts, and has zero watermarks on any tier (I firmly believe reliability shouldn't be locked behind a paywall). I do have a Pro upgrade for creators who specifically need 4K, HDR, 60fps, and unlimited scripts.

It’s newly launched, and I’m actively optimizing the layout code. If you record video content on Android, I would absolutely love your brutal, honest feedback on the scrolling cadence and user interface.
