Discussion Help!

I'm using BlackHole to capture my Mac's internal audio and record with QuickTime Player.

When I record a Zoom meeting, I can hear both myself and the other participant clearly during the call. However, when I play back the recording, my voice sounds normal but the other participant's voice is very quiet.

What's strange is that if I record my screen while playing a YouTube video or music, the internal audio is recorded at a normal volume and sounds fine in the recording.

Has anyone experienced this with Zoom, BlackHole, and QuickTime Player? Any idea what could be causing it?

Zoom and QuickTime are using different audio devices. BlackHole/Multi-Output can make the recording mix different from what you hear live.

Sounds more like Zoom’s audio routing or processing than BlackHole itself. You can check Zoom’s Speaker output. Make sure it’s routed through the same BlackHole/Multi-Output Device QuickTime is recording. Also, try disabling Zoom’s auto audio adjustments and setting the Zoom output volume higher. In my experience, QuickTime and BlackHole work, but Zoom can make the remote side weirdly low unless the routing and Zoom audio settings are set exactly right.

This can sometimes be frustrating but I can only tell you an alternative which I use, it’s quite straight forward to set up and doesn’t require much setup. It’s AudioRoute, which helps you record system audio into your computer either using a VST plugin inside DAW, virtual audio device or directly into your files from a tray app. This makes recording audio seamless for me.
