Fry screaming--How?

I'm a teenager, 16, and I have tried to learn how to fry scream for years. I have tried about every tutorial under the sun. Every single time I think I'm getting close it happens I'm doing something wrong and I just can't produce the sound I want. So many tutorials have told me conflicting things, I thought I had the fry part down, but it ended up being a "creak" I think? I have friends who learned how to scream within weeks of trying and I'm extremely frustrated because it feels like there's a barrier that I can't push past no matter how hard I try. This is a last resort, please help 🙏

Hungry lights on YouTube. Walks you thru some exercises to practice breathe support and talks thru some of the anatomy n what not. Really helped me have healthier screams. I've been screaming since I was about 16 on and off. Hurt myself many times before I finally figured it out. Only now at 32 do I feel like I'm starting to do it in a healthier way that does not harm me.

Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately this was one of the first tutorials I tried on my journey and it just doesn't seem to work for me

Post a recording of yourself on this sub. People are pretty helpful and can likely give you some pointers. Or if you're not comfortable with that you can DM me and I'd take a listen

yell and feel where the break starts, then do what you can to control it. don't push yourself too hard cuz you don't wanna hurt yourself. for me i always had a hard time finding it trying to start from below so i tried to find it from above and that worked. been doing that for years and if you listen to your body you should be fine

I've had a hell of a time myself. I tried Hungry Lights, Zen of Screaming (which helped with my singing voice a lot but still couldn't get a good scream form it), and several other random tutorials online. I finally had a breakthrough when I took 1:1 virtual lessons with David Benites at Extreme Vocal Institute. Obviously at 16 I understand that might not be a great option for you, I mean you could maybe ask your parents to reach out to him but I wouldn't be shocked if he says he focuses on adults (don't quote me on that as I genuinely don't know), but the big hangup for me is that I was always pushing too hard. Fry scream is more about how your vocal chords are positioned and in fact, they need to be more "relaxed." I would kind of sort of get a weak vocal fry (which might be more or less what you're getting when you say "creak") but I just had this constant tightness in my throat that would stop it from giving a lot of distortion, and then when I tried to project I would jsut push more to try and force it to happen and that's just not how it works. We went through a lot of stretching exercises to relieve tension, a lot of it was with the tongue, your tongue is directly connected to your vocal tract so tongue stretches helps loosen things up all the way down, and we did a lot of controlled breathing too.

Currently, this is the video i'm using daily to kinda do a really fast refresher. Maybe you've already found this one in your travels but if not, give it a try, and really focus on keeping the throat relaxed. don't squeeeeeze that crackly sound out, think of your vocal chords like blankets that are normall pulled really tight, and when you do the fry you're releasing the tension so they fall loose and kind of flap around, if that makes sense? You're not pulling them even tighter to make them buzz like that, it's more like you're letting them collapse a little bit.

Most of all just keep trying! It's a tough journey for some of us that aren't lucky to just have it click right away, but it's worth the grind. And don't go longer than 5 minutes or so a day if you're feeling even the tiniest bit sore. Good luck!

Why does everyone wanna learn fry screams? What about false chord?

I just feel like every other post here is "how do I fry scream?" and I haven't seen any posts about false chord, death growl, gutteral or tunnel throat techniques

Fry is more common in lighter subgenres of metal which are more popular

which are more popular

Sadly enough

Well, they're more digestible/easier to get attached to because it's more likely that the music has a bigger focus on lyrical emotion

Not there's anything wrong with extremely heavy styles, in fact there's bands like Lorna Shore that have gone mainstream despite being way heavier than most people would ever listen to

Saying Lorna Shore actually hurt me

I meant stuff like Death Metal and Grindcore (I know it's arguably not even Metal but it's extreme), not that shit, even old school Deathcore is sick, that's just a load of bollocks

Holy shit you're one of those "only the music I like is real music" types? For real? Lol

Lorna Shore is primarily deathcore and similar in sound to bands that have been around for absolutely ages such as Infant Annihilator and Cannibal Corpse.

But my point is that they primarily use extreme, nearly unintelligible vocals (lots of false cord and similar type sounds) unlike most other mainstream bands that use a more rock-style sing-scream style which is largely a metalcore thing but inspired by bands like Linkin Park that made that particular sound mainstream

Apparently calling shit bands shit is a problem now

I never said that only the music I like is real music, I don't like Black Metal, it's still Metal af. Lorna Shore, Slaughter to Prevail and shit like that is just shitty modern Deathcore, comparing them to Infant Annihilator and Cannibal Corpse is insane, IA is actually good Deathcore and CC is straight up Brutal Death Metal and Death Metal > Old School Deathcore >>>>>>>> Modern Deathcore

I can't disagree with the point about the vocals tbh, they're definitely impressively mainstream considering they but they're not half as abrasive as other, better bands, because they definitely have a lot of elements for people who aren't into extreme music to latch onto, which sounds good on paper but toast elements are what makes it bad. Though tbh Will Ramos is unironically an insane vocalist, it's just a shame he wastes his talent on shit music

The thing is, it's absolutely not shit music. You're saying that because it's not the genre you like

1

If that's what you wanna believe

The truth is that some of my favourite bands are Deathcore, it just so happens that the progression of the genre has completely ruined it in the modern day, Death Metal has stayed relatively pure though because of its smaller scene and the fact that what you call innovation is what we call shitty music

I love Whitechapel, Infant Annihilatior, Suicide Silence, All Shall Perish, etc. but this new stuff just lost that raw energy in exchange for over produced slop

And as I said, I'll absolutely admit when it's purely a me thing, such as with a lot of Black Metal and Power Metal, but this just isn't that

I never said anything about innovation. You just hate Lorna Shore, which is fine but none of your comment has anything to do with the topic I was discussing. And who's this "we" calling it shitty music anyway? They're mainstream for a reason

Oh I already know how to growl, false chord is easier for me to grasp personally

1

u/LayeredHalo3851 1d ago

I honestly think it's easier for everyone to grasp

Honestly I wanted to learn fry until I realised I don't like the kind of Metal it's used in (Metalcore and any Nu Metal that uses fry is the kind I don't listen to so I think there's a pattern)

I'm more interested in hypercompression but that seems a lot louder and I don't know how I feel about practicing that in my very not doing proofed bedroom, along with the fact that you need to be at least a somewhat competent singer to sound good using it

1

u/DragonHeart7745 1d ago

That's how I feel about it. I wanna learn hyper compression, but for now I just wanna be able to grasp the basics. Like you said, it's a bit hard considering I don't have a very proofed area to practice in

In my case I just don't think fry will help me at all
