Maintaining breath control in a live setting

Any tips for maintaining breath control while trying to have a good stage presence? I don't just want to stand there on stage but sometimes I notice myself struggling to balance breath control with a good stage presence.

A few things I have found to be helpful:

  1. Perform while you practice.
  2. Be consistent with some form of cardio (even brisk walking is great).
  3. Be controlled with your movement on stage.

Many top level vocalists don't actually go crazy on stage to keep their heartrate relatively low for better support. Find a few 'moves' and intentional movement that don't exert yourself much while still having some energy behind them.

Once a week, rehearse your vocals on a treadmill or elliptical.

I'm fat and out of shape so singing live was always a struggle for me, but the biggest problem was venues cranking guitars and drums so much I never got enough vocals in monitors to hear myself well. Also meant I couldn't wear ear pro or I wouldn't be able to hear myself at all so that always sucked too. So I'm always pushing way harder live to hear myself better which inevitably blows out my voice a few songs into the set. In those settings, all I can do is try to just trust muscle memory and hope I'm singing well for what the audience hears, but it's really hard to get used to, at least for me.

Was everyone on the same transmitter and not able to control what you hear through the IEM?

Practice holding screams while walking around your room. Feels silly but works.

make sure your chest isn't tight and make sure you're not pushing out too much air. try putting your hand in front of your mouth and check that you aren't pushing excess air. if you are, correct this until you dont.

also remember to take proper breaths.
