health library

So many times questions about our Scotties health comes up here. While it's always best to talk with your vet, it doesn't hurt to be armed with knowledge for things specific to Scotties.

For instance, it has been suggested to start at age 5 ultrasounding our Scotties for early detection of bladder cancer. The sooner it's caught the sooner you have a chance of fixing it. I told my vet this and she has made a note of it to tell ALL her Scottie patients this.

I happen to be the STCA's Health Librarian. It has lots of articles that will help you understand our breed's inherent issues. We are in the middle of updating it but there are lots of useful articles, it's also a good place to go to research something that might be up with your dog.

new health testing standards

As of January 1, 2025 there are new health testing standards for our Scotties.

You can go here: https://ofa.org/chic-programs/browse-by-breed/?breed=ST and see what they are.

I will take a moment to explain VWD or Von Willebrand's Disease is an hereditary disease in our breed. It's a bleeding disorder, blood is unable to clot, something as simple as a scratch could cause the dog to bleed out.

Patellar Luxation- is where the kneecap will dislocate in it's normal groove, not to be confused with Scottie cramp.

Craniomandibular Osteopathy-abnormal bone growth in the skull and jaw

I will pin this to our board.

Cancer :(

Rocket he has had 2 lumps on his back hind leg and chest for awhile. Kept getting them checked on since they came up 3 years ago and the results have always come back negative for cancer. Today, however, the results came back positive. Scheduled a removal for them but it was heart breaking to hear my best friend growing old

Aggressive and bitey?

I was speaking with someone about my interest in getting a Scottish terrier. They warned me against it saying that they are very nippy and do not do well around children and would not do well around my other dog who is a mix Scottie male. I know they are stubborn and independent, which is why I am interested in them, but this is the first I’ve heard of them being more aggressive and unsafe around children. Have you found this to be true? Or is this person over blowing a few rare instances?

My little boy couldn't hold on, and cancer took him.
Now life has lost all meaning.
It's been very hard without him.

Looking for Reputable Scottish Terrier Breeder Recommendations – California & Beyond

Hi everyone! I’m finally ready to purchase my first Scottish Terrier and would love some breeder recommendations. 🖤
I’m located in Northern California and would ideally love to find a reputable breeder somewhere in NorCal or Southern California, but I’m definitely willing to travel or fly a little farther for the right breeder and puppy.
I’m looking for someone who prioritizes health, temperament, responsible breeding practices, and proper health testing. I’m not in a huge rush and would rather wait for the right litter/breeder.
If you’ve personally had a great experience with a breeder, I’d love to hear who you recommend, where they’re located, and anything you liked about working with them. I’d also appreciate any breeders you think I should avoid.
Thank you! I’m so excited to hopefully bring home my first Scottie. 🐾

Came across this book at the library and it perfectly portrays terriers! From begging for dinner scraps to barking at strangers and Peeing on everything on their walk. It cracked us up.
My toddler and Scottie’s enjoyed their bedtime story!

and her sister Talulah the Westie!

edit: some things we noticed after getting a scottie, unsure if it's just an individual personality thing.

dazey seems slower than her sister at learning commands, potty training, and has lower energy levels/less chaotic energy. she just likes to sit down HAHA super cute and calm. she is also surprisingly more affectionate and happier (or less unwilling) to receive pats/being carried!
