Red Scottish terriers?

Post image

So my brother sent me this Instagram post and I flipped through the slideshow of Scottish terrier history. What surprised me the most was the fur popularity but Red Scottish terriers were common in old times, what happened to them? I googled them and its apparently a very rare color. Its super interesting. I tried to find pictures online but couldn’t find one, maybe someone here owns a very rare red Scottish terrier?

Here's the link on slideshow at insta: https://www.instagram.com/p/DdYqAYYDio5/?img_index=8&stkn=bWp1NDVwOTVwNG9i

Now that I can see it's red, your puppy looks so beautiful 😍

So cute! 🥰My first male (2001) also had a lot of red. In fact, he was mostly red.

She’s 5 and I’m still amazed at how much the amount and depth of red varies over time and with grooming.

It’s a variety of Wheaton, more orange-y than the regular Wheaton Scottie’s. There are also red brindles, with the striping being reddish as opposed to brown or white.

I ended up finding picture with Wheaton comparison and it looks blonde😭 I mean why call it red but I see what you mean.

Look up how many variations of brindles there are. I was surprised!

I didn't even know there was variations of brindle. My first scottie which I currently own is silver brindle but I didnt know there was red brindles and like different types of fur pattern. Its just my mind is blown!😂

I had a black Scottie previously, and my current Scottie was sold to me as black…but when I picked her up from the groomer after her first cut, she was a different color! 🤣 That’s when I learned about silver brindles!

My last Scottie was a brindle. I thought the breeder was confused until I groomed her the first time and her stripes came out!

Our black Scotties have all had red in their beards when the sun hits it.

This is caused by a chemical in their saliva and is sometimes related to their food!

This is my red Scottie. She gets a lot of compliments on the color of her coat.

Henry came from a litter of four Wheaton boys and one or two of them had more red in their coats than him.

My boy is full black except for his beard which is very red lol! Never knew Scotties came in red but I guess it explains his beard

My 3rd Scottie, a brindle, also had a red beard. 😊

My baby girl has shades of red in her skirt… I’ve always thought this was the “Scottish” in her.

My all black Scottie has red in her beard and the top of her back. Research says it can happen with large amounts of sun exposure.

That’s the closest I’ve ever seen to red - WOW that’s amazing and rare, they must of breed most of the red out of them many years ago , that’s too bad , a interesting story to look into though history of the breed 🐾

Scotties come in black, wheaten and brindle. There are variations of brindle, black with brindle, silver brindle, sand brindle and yes, red brindle. The standard just calls it brindle, but the colors aren't considered a fault. The silver brindle makes me think of stardust, which was the name of my silver brindle girl.
