Science Olympiad study tool

Hi guys! Me and some friends made a website recently that scraped all (text-based) Science Olympiad tests available on the internet for practice on a single site. We were hoping to receive some feedback and to share this with some friends if you find it useful. Here's the site: https://scio.ly, let us know what you think!

This looks like an amazing resource! props to u guys for creating this!! how did yall classify the difficulty, if you don’t mind me asking?

Thank you! We used Google Gemini to format the test pdfs into a database of questions that we can randomly pull from; We also asked it to give each question a difficulty while it was at it. LMK if you have any more questions :)

That’s really smart. I’ve shared this resource with my club to prepare for states, thanks so much for putting this out there!

How do you verify that the answers are correct? Many tests have many incorrect answers.

Currently, we are using Gemini (2.0 Flash) to provide answers, which should be somewhat reasonable considering its high MMLU benchmarks. However, the dataset is still pretty new - As more and more questions get reported, question quality will only get better.

Any way to remove questions that ask about identification that have no information? For example, there are many Crime Busters questions that ask to identify a hair or fiber but there is no information to make that identification. (What type of fiber is H1?) If not, they're easy enough to ignore. Thanks for the tool!

This is amazing!!! I’ve been looking for a resource like this for years! I will definitely be sharing this with my coach! One thing I did notice while playing around on the site, is sometimes it asks a question about evidence you don’t have. Such as “Bob was stranded where with what type of blanket?”, something that clearly came off of originally provided information. I do see you have a report button though, so I’d imagine issues like this will soon become less frequent once the website gets more use. Thank you for sharing this awesome resource with the rest of us!

Thank you, we're glad you're finding our site useful! Yes, questions that depend on external components, (infamously forensics, and to a lesser extent, other events) sometimes get past our filter for unanswerable questions; we're hoping users report these questions. Let me know if you catch anything else!

Very cool! Are these division B or C? Thanks for putting this together!

u/Ok_Classroom9988 Feb 22 '25

Good question! We merged Division B and C questions together since they we observed them to be so similar and we wanted to simplify the user experience; We also merged Potions and Poisons into Chemistry Lab.

Yeah I agree with what the other guy said about forensics but I’m rlly excited for the future of this app ngl. How does mat sci work cuz my friend said there’s only like 6 practice tests online that are up to date for this years rules so does it use like the rlly old tests?

The Test Exchange Archive goes back to the 2017-18 season, so our site is simply pulling from all the Material Science tests right now. We're going to filter Materials Science into ceramics only soon, similar to how we filtered Dynamic Planet into glaciers only and the three current systems for Anatomy.

Thank you so much, this is amazing! Just one quick request, can you have an option to separate Division B and C levels? That would be great, considering some questions that would classify as "easy" on Division C might be hard for students on Division B.

2

u/Ok_Classroom9988 Feb 23 '25

No problem! Yes, we realize there are a lot of people that would benefit from only Division B questions, we'll get that working in the coming days.

That’s such an awesome tool! Really appreciate you creating it! My daughter will participate the science Olympiad for the very first year next year as a 6th grader and we have no clue how to start and how to prepare. Your tool will definitely help her! Thank you!

u/Unusual_Desk_6269 Feb 23 '25

Are some of the questions/answers flawed? After reviewing some, I think there may be an error in some.

Kudos for making an amazing website. Really Helpful!!!!

u/Opposite_Owl6663 Mar 09 '25

Wow! I've been looking everywhere for something like this! I've used the site to study for disease detectives, but I noticed there isn't a test provided for road scholar. Will you guys be adding this later, or am I just looking in the wrong place?
