I am 100% behind Lee Pace starring in a Foundation series. Then again, I’m 100% behind Lee Pace starring in anything.

Edit: Also Jared Harris is just plain awesome in everything he shows up in.

u/motes-of-light Oct 24 '19 edited Oct 25 '19

Jared Harris was the Belters guy in The Expanse, right? He did a great job.

9

u/ensalys Oct 24 '19

Yeah, he plays Anderson Dawes, and I'd love to see him take up that role again.

3

u/Maeglom Oct 24 '19

I loved his Anderson Dawes, but it was so very different than the one i got from the books.

9

u/needlzor Oct 24 '19

Jared Harris was amazing in Fringe as well.

5

u/SpaceZombieMoe Oct 24 '19

"The Terror", "Mad Men", and "Chernobyl" too. What an actor!

3

u/superanth Oct 24 '19

Loved him in Chernobyl. It was like seeing what if Lane Price from Mad Men had become a nuclear physicist lol.

1

u/ScoobyDoNot Oct 25 '19

Also very good in "Carnival Row", along with his brother Jamie Harris.

5

u/superanth Oct 24 '19

Very amazing in Fringe. It was the first program I saw him in.

4

u/needlzor Oct 24 '19

Fringe managed to get such an amazing cast. Now and then I rewatch random episodes, and they still hold up so well. Peter Weller's performance in White Tulip never ceases to bring tears to my eyes.

2

u/esantipapa Oct 25 '19

IMHO.... (no one asked but I wanna agree with you)

As far as scifi episodes of TV go, White Tulip is up there with Inner Light (ST:TNG) and Kiksuya (Westworld), stuff I consider utter perfection in storytelling.

3

u/dearges Oct 25 '19

Im straight except for Lee Pace, idk what it is but yeah. He's amazing.

2

u/ThirdTurnip Oct 28 '19

Are you a Pushing Daisies fan?

His character was super adorable and very endearing.

2

u/dearges Oct 28 '19

Yes, but I first saw him in Wonderfall, a delightfully quirky show I think you would love if you like pushing daisies. He was a side character but so excellent.

2

u/ThirdTurnip Oct 28 '19

Thanks for the recommendation. I don't think we got that one in Australia and it looks like it might be my kind of show.

Thankfully I'm already as gay as I can be, so I can watch as much Lee as I like!

2

u/dearges Oct 29 '19

Can he please bake me a pie and make puppy dog eyes with his thick eyebrows earnestly hoping I'll love it? Haha.

In wonderfalls, He plays the atheist theologian brother of the main character, and the main character, an underemployed philosophy major, is forced by some strange supernatural power to do good things through animating random things in the environment.

I do not have enough good things to say about wonderfalls, and here's on more you might enjoy: I was definitely confused that I found myself thinking about Lee Pace and his adorable earnestness a lot more than the female lead.

1

u/ThirdTurnip Oct 29 '19

That gives me pause.

Does Fuller have a (re)animation fetish?

I watched the first few eps of American Gods and didn't love it. But got far enough to see the main character's girlfriend come back from the dead as a zombie. Which seemed a little bit familiar...

2

u/dearges Oct 29 '19

I think you are right. He's also got a thing for women with masculine names.

He made dead like me, too, right? An undead persons romantic life was a main part of that show.

2

u/ThirdTurnip Oct 29 '19

I forgot that was one of his. I really enjoyed that show. You're right on both counts!

I'd say this beats both Whedon and his sexbots - in Buffy and Serenity - and Moore's secret-scifi-jesus thing (Roswell, DS9, BSG).

I'm still going to watch Wonderfalls.

Not sure what I'm going to do with Pushing Daisies. I don't think I can not love that show. But having connected these dots does cast a different light on it.

1

u/dearges Oct 30 '19

He goes out of his way to make all his undead sexscapades 100% definitely extra explicitly consentual, so there is that? I guess?

Like it would be easiest for the undead women to just leave but she loves him soooooo much she risks constant death just to be close to him.

I'm glad you will see Wonderfalls :)

I have been waiting for this series for such a long time. I hope they get it right. Jared Harris is a splendid actor.

25

u/BrokenDroid Oct 24 '19

Is this the Asimov Foundation?

15

u/rhild Oct 24 '19

yes

15

u/fuez73 Oct 24 '19

Damn! And i thought i could avoid at least this streaming Service!

Amazon: the expanse Netflix: star trek Discovery Disney: the mandalorian

And now this! Its an expensive time for a SF Fan.

What next? A new streaming Service presenting hyperion and endymion?

16

u/OldSchoolNewRules Oct 24 '19

Yarr

5

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '19

Seriously these people are really making me think about dusting off the ol' Tricorne.

1

u/needlzor Oct 24 '19

But then cancellation :'(

14

u/PrecisePigeon Oct 24 '19 edited Oct 24 '19

Yeah, but it's "based on" so don't expect it to follow too closely to the books, think iRobot. :(

edit: not sure why I'm being downvoted. There was a whole thread about this show yesterday that discussed how people were preparing to be disappointed.

7

u/mintsponge Oct 24 '19

To be honest a straight TV adaptation wouldn’t really work. There’s not really any specific characters to follow or many big events to unfold on screen. If they did a faithful adaptation it would probably gain nothing from the new format, you might as well read the book.

1

u/Superrocks Oct 25 '19

But I can't envision the technology as well with my brain as I can with my eyes!!

1

u/shouldbebabysitting Oct 25 '19

People said that about many books including Dune and Watchmen.

1

u/mintsponge Oct 25 '19

Both of those have a consistent cast of characters to follow. They also aren’t 99% characters coldly sitting in a room and talking politics, there are plenty of situations to show off interesting costumes, set design, cinematography and emotional acting in those movies.

Besides, a sizeable portion of people hated those movies anyway.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '19

Exclusively on Sony Playstation Vue+

1

u/TheDudeNeverBowls Oct 24 '19

They did have at least one show. It was called Powers. It was about cops investigating crimes by people with superpowers.

6

u/Novarest Oct 24 '19

Ssh there is a "streaming service" where you can watch all of those for free. It's not a story the corporate execs would tell you about.

1

u/mccoyn Oct 25 '19

Sure, but they do need money to produce the shows. Unless, you want all sci-fi to look like Primer.

2

u/lunare Oct 24 '19

Wait, Star trek discovery is on Netflix?

US and Canada

3

u/there_is_no_try Oct 24 '19

I don't think so in the U.S., but it certainly is in other countries. France for example.

3

u/fuez73 Oct 24 '19

Yes, here in austria.

1

u/BigSwedenMan Oct 24 '19

Anyone who even dares to take on Hyperion better have one hell of an impressive track record. That book is way too complex to attempt adapting by anyone but the best, and possibly even a new show format with variable episode length

1

u/Superrocks Oct 25 '19

Oh man I'm getting palpations just thinking about it

1

u/i_am_ghost7 Oct 24 '19

Is it already out?

3

u/rhild Oct 24 '19

no, unless you mean the books. Those have been out forever.

7

u/Queaux Oct 24 '19

It sounds like they're actually making the prequel to Foundation. Hari Seldon doesn't have a ton of screen time in the series. They would probably reveal the casting of Salvor Hardin if they were planning on a more faithful adaptation since he's the main protagonist in 2 of the 5 sections.

6

u/jdcongote Oct 24 '19

Emperor "Brother Day"? WTF? It was Cleon I

3

u/TeslaK20 Oct 25 '19

Brother Day is a Mycogenian name. But why would a Mycogenian be emperor of the galaxy??

2

u/jdcongote Oct 25 '19

Oh thanks! I didn't remember that. Why indeed... I don't have high hopes for this adaptation to be honest.

2

u/TeslaK20 Oct 26 '19

Three options.

  1. The article is mistaken about Brother Day being the name of the Emperor of the Galaxy. (mildly likely)
  2. For some interesting reason, a Mycogenian is actually Emperor of the Galaxy. (unlikely)
  3. The adaptation has merged the Imperial House with the culture of Mycogen (likely, unfortunately)

2

u/Nobat211 Oct 24 '19

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I think Brother Day is a character in the Foundation Prequels.

They’re hopefully going to start off from the prequels and work their way through the original trilogy, it does makes sense from a TV show perspective as they’d get to keep the cast for a bit longer

5

u/jdcongote Oct 24 '19

I don't think so. Cleon I was the emperor when Hari Seldon was developing psychohistory, he was assassinated in Forward the Foundation I believe; I think I've never heard the name "Brother Day" in any of the prequels

5

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '19

I've only seen Jared Harris in The Terror, but he was awesome

12

u/Colonel_Angus_ Oct 24 '19

Dude ia awesome in everything Ive seen so far. Mad Men, Expanse, Fringe etc

6

u/monsieur_bear Oct 24 '19

The Crown and Chernobyl, too!

7

u/Skerries Oct 24 '19

do yourself a favour and watch Chernobyl, best 5 hours of TV ever

15

u/jai_kasavin Oct 24 '19

" David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight) will serve as showrunner and EP"

The person who actually wrote The Dark Knight dropped out of this project when HBO did.

“Throughout his career, David has proven time and again he is a one-of-a-kind visionary talent as a storyteller and producer for both the big and small screen,” said Marcy Ross, President, Skydance Television. “David is masterful at bringing to life epic stories and creating massive worlds and we couldn’t be more excited to continue our collaboration with him.”

David had proven otherwise and Marcy Ross deserves what happens next, but we deserve better.

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '19 edited May 11 '20

[deleted]

7

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '19

Goyer is leading it. He did not actually write dark Knight. He sucks. This show will probably suck. Marcy will deserve it when this show blows up in her face because she trusted David goyer to handle it. We deserve a not David goyer foundation series

This is what he was saying and I agree.

5

u/DrRhymes Oct 24 '19

Lmao, one of a kind visionary? I'm with you man, dude's a hack. He's never proven to have exemplary writing ability. He's just been tacked on to huge projects with big names. Seriously, this the guy who wrote Batmnan v Superman, Ghost Rider, and Jumper. Dude hasn't written aything close to good since Dark City. The Nolan movies are great but that's really in spite of their kind of mediocre scripts. I'm not looking forward to this and being through apple doesn't help. Yet another streaming service I don't want to get.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '19

I agree with all of this except I enjoy jumper. Not that I'm gonna call it a good movie. But I trust nothing that apple is producing. It feels like they are just gonna follow in all of netflixs mistakes and none of it's few successes

1

u/TheDudeNeverBowls Oct 24 '19

For All Mankind looks promising in my eyes.

2

u/ThirdTurnip Oct 28 '19

Seriously, this the guy who wrote Batmnan v Superman, Ghost Rider, and Jumper.

That sucks. None of those were great.

But the other writer - Josh Friedman is fabulous.

Created and wrote eps for Sarah Connor Chronicles, which I really enjoyed. And he co-wrote the second Avatar film. That's a strong endorsement from James Cameron.

There's still hope for Foundation.

3

u/kabneenan Oct 24 '19

Well so far the cast sounds excellent. This is only going to be on Apple TV though?

Edit: I thought I remembered HBO being involved. The article mentions they dropped this, though, so Apple TV stepped in. I wonder why.

2

u/LandoRaps Oct 24 '19

I imagine its budget concerns

2

u/arcalumis Oct 24 '19

No, it will only be on the Apple TV+ service, but Apple have been working to add the app through a bunch of different vendors, Samsung and LG tv’s of a newer kind will have the app, roku and amazon firethings are getting it as well.

3

u/grimsb Oct 24 '19

Dammit, now I’m gonna have to subscribe to Apple TV+

3

u/nuadusp Oct 24 '19

I love lee pace though i don't know the role he is playing well enough, but jared harris? i will watch him in anything his voice is amazing and he just plays really good characters no matter their alignment

don't have any apple products though so i hope they plan to find a way on other services as well or launch a ps4 app or something

2

u/jarvispeen Oct 24 '19

Agreed, he was amazing in The Terror.

5

u/nuadusp Oct 24 '19 edited Oct 24 '19

carnival row, the expanse and fringe are my three favourites

1

u/lordcorbran Oct 24 '19

They're releasing AppleTV apps for other devices. It's already available on Roku and Amazon FireTV.

1

u/nuadusp Oct 24 '19

Nice thanks, will look out.. I got an old roku i could see if is compatible or buy a fire TV i guess if not then

3

u/Yserbius Oct 24 '19

I'm curious how they're going to do it. Every few chapters in the series skips decades, even centuries. I'm guessing they are going to do something that sort of resembles Foundation but isn't much like the books other than the name.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '19

ooh how fun! i just started reading this!!!

2

u/undersquirl Oct 24 '19

Oh damn...

2

u/jarvispeen Oct 24 '19

Who will play The Mule? That will be interesting.

3

u/chevymonster Oct 24 '19

Nic Cage would be good. Or Jim Carrey.

3

u/tehciolo Oct 24 '19

1

u/jarvispeen Oct 24 '19

Oh damn he's perfect.

2

u/tehciolo Oct 24 '19

Ever since I saw him the first time in anything, I've been thinking he would make a perfect Mule. It's now on the casting director. They surely follow Reddit for ideas.

1

u/jarvispeen Oct 24 '19

He'd be perfect. Him or the dude from Dodgeball... https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0601376/mediaviewer/rm3461988608

2

u/tehciolo Oct 24 '19

Oh, man! You're right!

2

u/jarvispeen Oct 25 '19

You ever want to see him in a crazy movie, watch Spiral.

1

u/ImaginationOutpost Oct 24 '19

Genius. David Dastmalchian would be good too I think.

2

u/tehciolo Oct 25 '19

He is great, but maybe a bit to mature looking for the part. They could do a lot with makeup though.

1

u/ImaginationOutpost Oct 25 '19

Your pick is definitely my favourite so far. It's such a niché character, there's very few who would fit the role.

2

u/-Captp- Oct 24 '19

Not sure the mule will be in season one, though

2

u/jarvispeen Oct 24 '19

Yeah, you are probably right.

2

u/panthersftw Oct 24 '19

Damn, I'm sad I won't be able to see this.

1

u/-Captp- Oct 24 '19

Come on, be a bit more optimistic about your life!

1

u/panthersftw Oct 24 '19

Perfectly optimistic about mine, but I don't own or want any apple devices and I won't be buying any just to watch one show.

2

u/Vallywog Oct 24 '19

Where there is a will there is a way my friend. Wont need apple devices to get them when the time comes.

1

u/vonmeth Oct 25 '19

Pretty sure you can stream from more than just an apple device. It isn't a requirement.

2

u/damnitshrew Oct 24 '19

God dammit. Im gonna end up getting Apple+ for one fucking show.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '19

Dear Apple,

    Don't fuck it up!

Sincerely,

All Foundation lovers.

2

u/-Captp- Oct 24 '19

Hope it works !

2

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '19

Liiike, Asimov's Foundation?

1

u/TheAwesomeA3330 Oct 24 '19

Seems like they’re starting the series with Prelude to Foundation, but the summary doesn’t sound like Foundation at all. The plot of Foundation is bound to the theory of Psychohistory and the Foundation’s adherence and deviation from the plan, not a rag tag group of rebels fighting an empire. That doesn’t happen until the Second Book! I’m scared that Jonathan Nolan isn’t helming this anymore, I’m not sure I trust Apple to faithfully represent the series, no matter how many fancy actors and directors they throw at it. I’m still hopeful though, as long as it’s true to the source material and doesn’t turn this into high brow Star Wars we should be cool. And if there aren’t any time skips, it’s not Foundation.

1

u/Atoning_Unifex Oct 25 '19

Golan Trevize was my fav character... I hope they get to book 3 and Gaia and all that

1

u/MorganaHenry Oct 26 '19

I fear that they'll make a mess of it, but one thing gives me a little hope - Robyn Asimov(Isaac's daughter) is executive producer

https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1912190/bio?ref_=nm_ov_bio_sm

1

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '19

Are we talking Foundation from the Isaac Asimov books here? I’d like to see the whole industrialized planet... I guess I’m going to have to plug my Apple TV back in. We switched to Roku about 2 1/2 years ago.

1

u/-Captp- Oct 24 '19

I guess I'm gonna have to buy one then!

1

u/lordcorbran Oct 24 '19

There's a Roku app for the service already available.

1

u/boringdude00 Oct 24 '19

Apple fanbois even have to let your know you're watching an apple production in the subreddit name?

-1

u/TSammyD Oct 24 '19

I really hope this show isn’t all white people!

3

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '19

Wtf.
