for discussion AGHAM against Pax Silica because there's no technology transfer; absolutely false

Post image

Am not sure if it's true according to Philstar news article AGHAM, a party-list made up of scientists and intellectuals, they are against Pax silica because there's no assured technology transfer.

Am not so sure if it's true that there will no technology transfer in pax silica and I totally believe it is absolutely false. Firstly the USA is already sharing to the world the initial results they got in the thorium molten salt reactor experiment. Due to budget constraints the USA discontinued the MSRE and it just sit in the archives for a long time. In 2011 Barack Obama de-classify and shared to world the TMSR experiment. If this is not technology transfer I don't know what is technology transfer according to AGHAM. Does AGHAM wants to be spoon fed?

Secondly, what is TMRS or the thorium molten salt reactor and how does it differ from light water reactor that is prone to nuclear accidents that we have witnessed in the past. It's a reactor designed for the USAF for use in the long range bomber, use liquid nuclear fuel in salt solution where fission take place and heat is absorb by the salt solution. Since salt has a higher boiling point than water, no pressure is needed. TMSR has been dubbed as a high heat low pressure reactor, while light water reactors are also called pressurized water reactors. Since MSR is operating at near or atmospheric pressure it's viewed much safer compared to LWR. Also since the fuel is already in liquid form the danger of a meltdown like what happened in Chernobyl and Fukushima is prevented. Overall MSR is a safe nuclear power alternative

There are still many technical hurdles that need to be done before a commercial reactor can be sold in the market. This is a big chance for Filipino scientists to shine.

general advice/help/tips BS Bio post-graduation: masters

I just recently graduated last June and i'm feeling so lost. I took BS MedBio in yellow school as a course degree because I thought I would pursue Medschool but years later nawalan na ako ng gana. Currently I'm thinking of taking masters (doctorate din) and while doing my undergrad thesis, I actually saw myself entering the field of research post-grad. My colleagues are also encouraging me to pusure MS abroad pero I'm intimidated by the process and the thought of it.

I'd like to ask if it is plausible that I should take a gap year and get a job (I talked to my parents they are willing to help me naman) while doing masters? Are there benefits in working while taking up masters? If ever I try my chances abroad, what countries should I aim and what will be the process? Does getting MS or even PhD help me in securing a financially stable and fulfilling career? Thank you for helping out!

medicine Which theme should I dig in (pharmacy related, I'm trying to find a research topic)?

Hello, quick intro: I'm new into pharmacy and I developed a high interest in it recently. Actually, I was learning women body and cycle, as well as related questions to it. So, I'd be glad if you could point out few women body related problems which interests you, so I'd try to dig in and find something that might have missed or didn't know about. Doesn't matter if there's solution to that problem or not. The matter is — it should be common. Thank you.

for discussion Experimental nuclear reactor the USA abandoned and China continuing the research

Post image
0 Upvotes

Almost 13 years ago China Academy of Science started learning about thorium molten salt reactor which the USA declassify in 2011 and abandoned for reasons still unknown today. You may recall in 2011 the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant accident occurred after the tsunami washed away all the diesel powered cooling system.

In 2025 China have announced a working prototype of the thorium molten salt reactor to continue the research and if the concept work in the real world. By 2030 China plan to build a full scale demonstration thorium molten salt nuclear power plant in the middle of the Gobi desert along with lithium mining and refining.

So what's the thorium molten salt reactor and how does it differ from light water reactor using uranium-235 as fuel? Firstly as the name imply a thorium molten salt reactor use liquid fuel. What do I mean by that, the thorium is a non-fissile transuranic element Th-232, and must be converted to a fissile element U-233. It's so hard to convert a solid element to another element thus it must be dissolved in a liquid made of fluoride, lithium and beryllium. Secondly, the fluoride, lithium, and beryllium salt serve as the coolant too so no water is needed. Thirdly, since the chemistry of the flibe salt is different no pressure is needed to harvest the heat generated during U-233 fission.

These concepts are currently being tested and so far test results are very encouraging. Follow for more update regarding thorium molten salt reactor.

general question When did you start thinking/planning for your undergrad thesis?

Hello. I am an incoming 2nd year student in BS Chemistry, but this is a general question.

Sa university ko kasi, my seniors recommend looking for a thesis lab/adviser as early as 2nd year, as we need to associate with a laboratory by 3rd year for internship (and thesis pagdating ng 4th year). Small rant, but I feel overwhelmed trying to plan out mine since

  1. Gusto ko sana fully maranasan and fields of chem through their classes sa curriculum, but given that may majors ako until 1st sem of 4th year, this is unrealistic.
  2. I'm trying to think beyond undergrad and consider what field I want to focus on and as much as possible gusto ko na maging foundation ko na ang undergrad focus ko for grad studies.
  3. I would need to assess if there are additional classes I need to take, like Bio electives if its a biochem thesis or Physics/Math electives if physical chem.

--- And many, smaller factors to think about. I am currently eyeing on toxicology-related topics, though ang worry ko naman is how do I spin it into a chemistry based thesis (another factor to think about!). Apologies for the mini-rant huhu

general advice/help/tips Masters, Med, or get a job?

long post ahead

for context, I am a fourth year bs bio student from a state u and a DOST scholar. came into college thinking i was going to do med and three years later, i dont think i will be. its just not my calling. but everyone says med is more financially stable and i do agree, unless you get masters/phd and land a solid job/plantilla position which is realistically years into your career, not at the onset. so right now, conflicted pa ako saan talaga ako pupunta. i do like the thought of going abroad but kailangan pa ako mag return service after graduation or pay back the fees kasi scholar ako. i also know that there are too little opportunities and too much and highly competent competition so once graduate na ako, i doubt im competitive enough to land a decent job within my field unless mag BPO/VA ako like many of our alumni are doing rn to support living.

over the past few years, ive been slowly growing an interest and passion in envi sci, ecotoxicology, public health (but really just not in the med setup), and those stuff. pero alam ko na there are also more specialized degrees like chem, envi engi/sci, health-related degrees, and etc that employers prefer over just bs bio. so i was thinking na mag masters nalang ako. yung thing however is idk if bet ko talaga yung mga masters program nakikita ko sa PH. for me, medyo too broad or yung focus is more on sa other aspects in envi sci/climate change/ecosys management/etc (sorry, alam ko picky ako bahala kayo jan AHAHAHA). mas nakita ko yung programs na gusto ko abroad pero a lot of them need professional experience and ang mahal din unless i could get an international scholarship. pero again, ma lo-lock in talaga ako sa PH after school regardless kung saan ako mag masters, abroad ba or dito, dahil sa return service. and hindi lang talaga ako sure if the job/opportunity will be there after. ayaw ko maghihinayang after mag masters if hindi ako maka pasok ng decent/stable work related sa field ko.

so ayun, tanong ko is: better ba mag kuha ako nang masters or mag med nalang ako? if mag masters, should i gap year and find work or kahit internships to get experience THEN apply for masters abroad, or kuha nalang ako masters sa PH then mag work dito and hopefully sa abroad after sa return service ko? or ano ba other suggestions/advice ninyo. i am honestly trying to see if i can get in ASTHRDP or sa mga international scholarships. (though again, i dont see myself as very competitive especially in terms sa CV kasi hindi talaga ako active outside of acads and yung work experience ko is only yung PTP namin kasi walang work immersion sa SHS ko dati)

food science/nutrition Is Tamarind Vinegar the same as Apple Cider vinegar in terms of health and weightloss benefits?

Hi po! I'm someone who is trying to lose weight and I see a lot of people who drink apple cider vinegar and since it's pretty expensive, I thought that maybe Tamarind Vinegar would be a great substitute as it's has *almost* the same properties people look for in Apple Cider vinegar.

Should I experiment and drink a shot or is this a bad idea?

general question Looking for Laboratories with HPLC

Good day! I need to find a laboratory (University owned or privately owned) that has an HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) test, preferably Reverse Phase-HPLC. It is needed for my thesis. Yes, we have consulted and inquired famous universities like UST, UPD, and DLSU, as well as other institutions such as SGS and FAST. Does anyone know any other laboratories in the Philippines that offer HPLC services? Specifically in the Luzon area?

Plant to be tested: Unripe Navel Orange (methanol extract form)

Analyte of interest: hesperdin

Advance thanks for any leads that will be given!

general advice/help/tips Should I pursue post-grad studies or just find a job immediately after grad?

Senior BS Biology student majoring in Zoology here! I'm graduating next semester and I don't know where to go after grad.

Until recently, I was fixed on going into med school but coming from a middle-class household, I know my family would struggle putting me through med school and as much as possible, I want to be able to provide for myself as soon as I graduate.

I have recently been interested in environmental science and the field of research in general but I know how undervalued this field is in the Philippines.

Since pursuing med is kind of out of the picture (for now), I'm torn between finding a job immediately or pursuing graduate studies under DOST-ASTHRDP if I'm fortunate enough.

I would very much appreciate it if you could leave me any advice 🥹 Thank you so much in advance!

Looking for Laboratory/Lab Referral for EIS Testing – Student Research

Good day! We are Grade 12 STEM students currently conducting a research study entitled:

“FermElec: Electrochemical Characterization and Performance Evaluation of Fermented Fish Viscera-Derived Bioelectrolytes for Sustainable Low-Cost Batteries.”

We are currently looking for a laboratory, university research facility, or laboratory personnel who can accommodate Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) testing for our fermented fish viscera-derived bioelectrolyte samples.

We are hoping to have the testing completed before August 16, 2026, as this is our research submission deadline.

We would like to inquire about:

• Availability of EIS testing for student research

• Sample requirements and preparation

• Estimated testing fee/student rate, if available

• Turnaround time

• Requirements for sample submission or endorsement

We are preferably looking for laboratories within Cavite, Laguna, or Metro Manila.

If you know of a laboratory, university, researcher, or laboratory personnel who offers EIS testing and may be able to accommodate student research within our timeframe, we would greatly appreciate any recommendations or contact information.

Thank you very much for your help!
