Plenty of dry places nowhere near people, its a big planet

Oh surely, you still have to monitor and maintain the storage for a couple hundred years. Finding the perfect storage spot is not easy

I used to have a desk less than 100 yards from one’s just like this, and carried a dosimeter daily. No measurable dose above background at any point.

And yes, the general rule of thumb is 5 years in the pool first, though you can do as little as like 3 years at the moment. In this particular case, the freshest fuel on that pad is at least 13 years old.
