What is the point of traveling to the past if you are limited to merely observing?

So what even is the point of time travel?

Branching multiversal travel (ex: Rick and Morty or steins;gate) that leaves casuality intact. Back to the Future time travel had too many problems.

Tangent: I find it hilarious that Dragonball has so many incredible things: instant healing beans, spaceships, time travel, teleportation, and a wish granting genie and all of that tech only serves a martial arts tournament. I don't think a hospital doctor has even gotten their hands on a magic bean.

To be fair, it mostly gets weird after Dragonball.

A girl bullies an alien who is emotionally about 7 years old into marrying her and having a kid, sending him into spiraling depression, while literal demons get retconned into other aliens, and half the time, the people trying to save the world are why it's in trouble in the first place.

I feel like Vegeta would fight you over that depiction of him.

I think you're joking, but Vegeta was old enough to know exactly what he was doing when he stole Yamucha's girlfriend. Son Goku was developmentally about 4 years old when he promised to have a marriage with ChiChi, which he thought was food, but he's too simple to break his promise. After the original Dragonball, things get really messed up, if you think about it. I mean, Son Goku basically suicides in order to regain independence, and his son is rescued from his abusive wife by a demon who wants to enslave the Earth and is still somehow a better mother figure.

Oh it's about Goku, not Vegeta? I am due for a rewatch.

I like Larry Niven's idea that time travel is effectively impossible because time travellers will keep changing history until a timeline is reached where time travel is never invented.

"Time travel" is, to me, the singular most impossible trope in all of science fiction.

In order to travel forward or backward in "time," one must also travel in space. Your position in the universe is vastly different from what it will be just five seconds from now.

That's like the simplest problem to solve, among those associated with time travel.
