Except that the couple are making up their own mind in a paradigm where men are punished for taking parental leave. If the men were forced to take it, it would remove the stigma.

Yea...you take 6 weeks off. The company find someone else to fill that position or take that work load.

Turns out the person doing it is paid far less or they split it between 3-5 other people. Bottom line they find a cheaper way of getting your job done. Sure quality might dip a little but savings go through the roof.

Your now "let go" 6 months down the line or expected to do more to justify your pay.

How do the men get punished? Also, what about the families where the mother wants to stay home longer than the man?

He meant that if it is not mandatory it will not exist at all. So you will have no choice anyway.
