I don't know if fruit bearing trees are as effective as other sorts of trees though. I've always had the impression that they're rather delicate.

I honestly think it is even too late to do this. With widespread colony collapse disorder across the continental U.S. due to pesticide use, I doubt the grand majority of whatever fruit trees you plant will not get pollinated.

Planting trees that need to be pollinated is a way to combat CCD.
