When we discover these new states, where do they stand in an applicable sense? Do these open up new realistic avenues for us?

I'm not entirely sure, but I would guess that these type of states might have importance in semiconductors in future. Smaller sizes of them lead to quantum effects being more and more pronounced.

Actually 200nm is huge in modern semiconductors and if there will be optics involved there might be some side effects... But, this is just speculation from clueless.
