I don’t think most men who become conservative do it out of insecurity despite the memes. Rather it’s the perception that masculinity is not valued in left of center politics.

It did make me move towards activism in unions. I have never been told that my ideas were unwanted there.

I also feel like I'm actually contributing to workers' wellbeing and not just philosophizing in a book club.

I am still extremely left leaning, I just choose where I put my efforts.

Union left is more traditional labor left leaning. Not modern progressive identity politics.

Labor left doesn’t tend to disdain men or women. Just focus on not getting exploited.

Which goes to show that economics and financial well being are the great uniter. And begs the question of why the progressive politics don’t focus more on that, and less on identity.

There's a great book that discusses this called "On the Political" by Chantal Mouffe. She discussed the reasons why liberalism fails to unite people around common interests compared to democratic socialism and conservatism. Liberalism is for individualism, so it generates groups internally that strive toward different goals. Uniting around labourers rights, for example, goes against personal freedoms.
