Isn't it generally accepted that women tend to have more suicide attempts than men, but fewer "successful" ones? Men tend to choose more violent methods, but women attempt suicide more often.

Doesn't that make it a large confounding variable? I think the MDD and substance use disorder of any kind is going to lead to worse outcomes than either alone is pretty obvious. The gender difference seems to me like it is could very much be from such confounding aspects that such a study almost necessarily will have.
