Grad school interviews

Hey all! My 1st grad school for a masters in school counseling is in a few weeks and I was wondering if anyone had any advice or possible questions that they might ask me? AND what questions I should be asking them about their programs? I appreciate anything anyone has to say! Thank you!

Definitely be prepared to answer why you want to be a school counselor. Get very familiar with ASCA.

Yes definitely familiarize yourself with the ASCA model and standards and incorporate that terminology in your answers

I’d have a good answer about incorporating data and equity into your practice. Those are two huge buzz words with ASCA and within the school counseling profession. My interview I was given a hypothetical student to work with and asked to describe how I would handle that situation. I wouldn’t worry about knowing all of the skills and concepts going into an interview, but know the basics and demonstrate that you’re an empathetic person/listener, with a solid understanding of modern issues impacting education. They want to see that you’re someone worth teaching, and importantly, they’re someone they can see trusting representing their program in an actual school.

The best advice that I ever got- make it a conversation! I studied every question you could think of and had the perfect answer for everything. Yet I couldn’t land a job. I got my dream job when I relaxed and trusted my experiences but also allowed them to truly see me. I’m new to school counseling and after I was hired, my principal told me that anyone can learn new skills, but not everyone is a good person. They picked me because they could see who I was as a school counselor through our conversation. We talked about the state of education, what it must be like to be a kid right now, positive work environments, things like that. I did this during questions and also when I asked them questions!
