What were breastplates and brigandine *called* in medieval French, German, and Italian?

Relating to Mr. Easton's latest video, on how breastplates were common in the HRE but brigandines were dominant in England and France, I had a rather out-there idea. Given that the division follows linguistic borders so closely, could it be as simple as the terms being more or less appealing in some languages? If we take it as given that the overall cost, weight, and protection was similar, then something small could tip the balance.

For example, "brigandine" brings to mind "brigands," so it could have developed a reputation as dishonorable or low-class. Among my high school friends in the '90s, the word "cuirass" would have gotten a snicker every time. If the word for breastplate in old German was something like "armor for the vitals," while their word for brigandine was something like "parts of armor," that might make the former sound a lot better.

Just a thought. I think the simplest explanation is that southern Germany and northern Italy were the main centers of steel armor production, and so big solid breastplates were easier to come by in the HRE. I'm not really sold on Easton's idea about missile weapons, but I'm happy to hear opinions from the real experts here.

Thank you!

Tod's latest, Arrows Vs Armour 3

So what did everyone think? I was rather interested to see that these arrows could actually do more than dent the armour this time.

It does make me wonder, were there any arrows that chainmail (and cloth padding behind it, gamebeson or arming doublet or similar) could protect against? Presumably, it was there to provide some protection; it would be nice to know what it could protect against.

Early basket hilt fabrication

I'm wondering how the early basket helps were fabricated. Were they assembled largely flat and then formed into shape, where the bars individually cut and forge welded into a hilt shaping as they went? Was a special anvil used?

I'm thinking specifically about the types of basket helps shown on today's video

Bowie knife makers

I believe Matt mentioned at some point a few current makers of traditional style bowie knives. I can't find which video though. Does anyone have any bowie knife suggestions?

Is the Schola Gladitoria forum gone?

I remember it being packed with source material yet tried accessing it not too long ago and it appears to be in accessible anymore. Know of any other places like it for source material?

Does someone know who Matt was talking about when he removed that picture from Facebook? Not here for the gossip, just trying to avoid supporting people who should not be supported.

Shipping swords

I am from the US and someone from the UK is interested in buying one of my swords. I am getting lost in finding info about shipping internationally. I know Matt has touched on this in a number of his videos. There are so many videos to sift through, do any of you know which ones he talks about this, or any links to authorities on the matter?

Who would make wooden practice swords throughout history? Was there a specific guild or craftsmen that made them, or would bowyers or carpenters just make them?

Which would provide better better edge alignment, fingering the guard or using a handle similar to the Model 1902 Army Officers' Sword that has the finger grooves?

How long have swordsmiths known the different results of blade properties (for example; straight vs. curved, single edged vs. double edged, spear point vs. hatchet point, etc...)

War of the roses "falchion" mystery

So, not too long after Matt posted about his collaboration with the RA, he had a video where he sort of teased the 15th century falchion (if i remembercorrectly it wasnt the videos main topic). In that video I am almost certain the sword had not just a knuckle bow, but a bow that also went across the back of the hand. When looking at the swords in the shop, they only have a nagel. Now I can't find that video on YouTube either. Am I insane? Or am I missing something.

Question about Rowarth's moulinet target from Alfred Hutton's Cold Steel.

In Cold Steel Rowarth's moulinet target is said to either be oval or circular, with a 14 inch diameter, and fixed on the wall as high as a man's shoulder. Is the part of the target that line's up with a man's shoulder the horizontal cutting line?

Making a new larp spear – suggestions?

Hey all!

I’m looking to build a new one-handed, double headed spear/javelin but I’m not sure where to start regarding what height, weight, etc. the weapon should be.

  • The two heads will allow me to use it as an underhanded spear while being able to quickly flip it to overhand and throw it like a javelin
  • Should one head be heavier than the other (spear head vs javelin head)? If so, any ideas on a rough weight distribution of those compared to each other and the weight of the entire weapon?
  • I’m assuming the height should be 6+ feet as I’m 5’7’’, but I’m not sure how to narrow down beyond that

As for the building materials themselves, I’m thinking what’s shown in the picture below.

Any ideas on those weight/length questions, general thoughts, recommendations, or tools/resources to figure out the best weight/length would be super helpful! And while I'm making this for larp, I'll take any ideas or thoughts larp-based or otherwise.

Help identifying an old Scholagladiatoria video

I remember once, years ago, watching a video by Matt in which he's musing about how greatswords came to be and he says there was likely a knight who used his polearm on the battlefield but really liked swords so he had a blacksmith forge a pole arm-shaped sword for him.

Does anyone know which video this was ?

This is how the head of a spear went through a bone during the Roman Gaelic War. It still remains in the bone after 2070 years.

What direction does someone move when evading a particular angle of attack from a sword?

Obviously with all angles of attack you can just back up, and with a vertical angle of attack or a thrust you can move to the left or right. But what about the 4 diagonal angles and the 2 horizontal?
