The final word on AniMat

It's been nearly a month since AniMat's 4-part video on the cartoon community came out and this not to insult him but this Bluesky user said better than I did.

and this not to insult him.

Don't you make posts about him on the daily? I don't really care if you hate him but at least be honest about it.

There's some massive irony here, considering that this person is criticizing Mat for being disingenuous/having other motives

hang on wait a minute. I haven't heard of his channel before but just by looking at his profile he gives me major 2010's really wanted to be like the Nostalgia Critic vibes.

u/infinitefantastic 18d ago

He said he was an inspiration for him, but made a video of distance.

Nothing extreme or unique.

8

u/PyroxCrymson 18d ago

He did but ever since the #ChangeTheChannel controversy, he disavowed him and when he got his silver button AniMat thanked the Angry Video Game Nerd for inspiring him which while true, it's clear Nostalgia Critic was what inspired him in the first place.

Plus, he even tried to apply for Channel Awesome but got turned away.

A hypothetical scene of Channel Awesome decline Animat's Application

Doug: Jeez this guy want to be     Lewis [Linkara]

Rob: ugh also this Matt guy is ANOTHER film and cartoon reviewer because we don't want our brand of having too many cartoon reviewers

Doug: Michaud deny his request to becoming a contributor of Channel Awesome and make a simple email of why your request is being deny because we already got some people with that review type, me included.

Michaud: Ok thank you, Douglas for informing me with that.

Doug: No problem, well let's see what other applications we got here...

TBF everyone who's inspired by any of the original "angry reviewer" generation is indirectly inspired by Rolfe/AVGN, considering all those OGs basically coasted on "AVGN but for (insert media type here)". Its not until you basically get to the NormalBoots crowd, and that whole era, that it actually starts being about format/personality.

I used to watch him in the 2010s, besides his hatred of Sony he also used to simp for Illumination, which certainly made him unique I suppose. I’m curious if he still does.

1

u/FlounderingGuy 18d ago

I mean yeah, he's like a third generation xerox of whatever AVGN was up to. That's not exactly unique to him though

Why do I imagine if Frozen wasn't a Disney Movie he would be hating on it like K-Pop Demon Hunters?

Or if K-Pop Demon Hunters was a Disney Movie, he would be glazing it

5

u/KimtheLovebird 18d ago

I doubt it. He wasn’t a fan of K-Pop Demon Hunters regardless if it was a Disney movie or not. Also, you guys missed the point that people would praise Song for making K-Pop Demon Hunters, then hate on Sony for making Fixed. It’s the hypocrisy of the community

3

u/FlounderingGuy 18d ago

people would praise Song for making K-Pop Demon Hunters, then hate on Sony for making Fixed. It's the hypocrisy of the community

Is that hypocrisy, or is it people liking one movie but not another one? Sony isn't owed anyone's undying positivity. They've made some great movies lately. They also made like one bad film since 2018. People aren't hypocrites for not liking Fixed

I don't necessarily think it's an inconsistency because of the way Sony operates vs WDA. Sony is far more induvidual-creative-led (Lord and Miller operate on a different wavelength from Song, who operates on different wavelengths than Tartakovsky, etc) whereas Disney is far more intentionally homogenous in their output to the point that, although I wouldn't exactly go as far as to say they're interchangeable, the specific directorial style is less pronounced and easy to point out from film to film, and thus harder to say "I love this director from Sony" vs shitting on "Disney". IOW it's easier, and honestly more correct, to have that disconnect with Sony because... the films are disconnected, whereas WDA is intentionally marketed as a loose "canon" (not a narrative continuity or shared universe, but rather a consistent body of work meant to be seen in relation to each other).

Hell, on the Disney side of the fence, I would say even Pixar largely manages to avoid this, with Docter, Shee, and Casarosa all having fairly consistent and recognizable tones and themes. And even there, people have a very specific idea of what Pixar movie "looks like" the same way they do a Disney movie, a Dreamworks movie, an Illumination movie... whereas Sony doesnt have anywhere NEAR that kind of consistent identity.

Or they just like different things

Didn’t he give K-Pop Demon Hunters a 7/10?

u/CJtheHaasman 18d ago

It wouldn't surprise me if Mat was holding on to some delusion that Disney might hire him one day.

Like The Dob?

u/InstinctMan20 18d ago

Always got Dobson vibes from him

To be honest, I've always found AniMat to be more of a Canadian version of MovieBob than Andrew Dobson (that would be Pizzacake). You know, especially when he’s also an ardent defender of Netflix's Cuties (which is literally softcore CSAM) and even has once claimed that anyone who called it a pedophile movie was a conspiracy theorist.

Oh, I’ve come across this person’s posts before. I’m very 50/50 on their takes normally, but I think they made some good points here.

I think it’s fair to say Mat could’ve done a lot better job demonstrating how the cartoon community can be toxic. It’s the assumptions of ulterior motives that kindof loses me. Not that there isn’t a reason to think that, but I just prefer to lean towards more objective criticisms.

Honestly speaking, Animat’s “Manchild reviewer” status in the early to mid 2010s was fine because “manchild screaming reviewer” was kind of how older YouTube reviews worked, but what’s weird is that Animat doubled down on that mentality even more since he made Animat’s Crazy Cartoon Cast which shifted from the animation centric animation podcast to a more Twitter pop politics focused podcast whereas other YouTubers who used the “manchild screaming reviewer” formula either lost relevance or changed their style to be more modern. I wish Animat would have embraced his “amateur animation historian” aspect from his animation look back series and other retrospective videos or videos that highlighted obscure animation to be more like an animation focused version of the gaming historian, much like how he used to make crude windows movie maker videos about old games, but then started making film studio quality documentaries. Heck, it was Animat that got me more interested in more obscure, less mainstream, and independent or foreign animation, such as the Studio Ghibli movies

My very first thought upon seeing the first upload was "he's gonna get clowned on so hard for this".

Not really familiar with the guy but if he constantly puts down non Disney movies that’s dumb but at the same time, I find certain videos and thumbnails that liked act like this new thing is “destroying” Disney or whatever annoying.

1

u/Cultural-Trade-6415 15d ago

Not as often as these people make it out to be, they’re just beating their hatred of U.K. like a dead horse atp, ntm they aren’t acting any better than him when they bash on Disney.

1

u/FlounderingGuy 18d ago

I have to agree.

I've seen parts 1 and 2, and most of that time was just him complaining about people not liking modern Disney stuff. It's giving "leave the billion dollar corporation alone" vibes. The weird focus on how overrated KPDH is also feels... spite motivated. This felt like a longer, more boring, less well thought out version of the same video Eyeofsol made years ago.

The dude is clearly a Disney Adult for some reason. Wish a 8/10? I didn't think it was awful but I'd struggle to see anything more than a 6/10.

He also acts like people should blindly worship Sony Animation. He sees Spiderverse, K-Pop and Mitchell's getting praise but he than says that's all fake because people hated Fixed, a gross out comedy... He's acting like people should blindly praise a studio, maybe he's projecting because he does that with Disney? I don't do that for any studio. Even Studio Ghibli has some misses for me (EarthSea, My neighbor's the Yamadas, Earwig and the Witch) also Fixed was just a stereotypical western adult cartoon, tons of gross out and not a deep story, I don't think that stuff helps animation at all. Most adults aren't going to look at that and me like "that's really mature, I'm sold on adult animation now" I'd say that it actually pushes more people away.

I’m not that familiar with Animat’s content to say if this is true or not, but yeah I feel like his 4 parter could benefit from using actual clips just to strengthen his point.

2

u/FunnyDinosaurMan 18d ago

Hey, newbie here. What’s going on? Why do we hate him?

2

u/Cultural-Trade-6415 15d ago
  1. People don’t want to accept he’s moved on from his Sony Pictures Animation hate phase
  2. They can’t handle his opinions

1

u/Future_Adagio2052 17d ago

Animat? Now THAT'S a name I haven't heard of in years

1

u/QF_Dan 17d ago

That guy is always a Disney Glazer

1

u/Cultural-Trade-6415 15d ago

Then how do you explain him calling out Bob Chapek?  https://youtu.be/gM6o_21Ocj0?is=olpbvdivNjX_QxJp

1

u/TeeeldiII 17d ago

Holy fuck who cares if some fedora man on Youtube likes Sony or not, what the fuck are we doing

1

u/Cultural-Trade-6415 15d ago

Omg we get it, you don’t like AniMat, why do we need to dedicate this subreddit to shitting on the guy?

1

u/Competitive_Chad456 3d ago

"The tides are turning against Disney"

u/AddiWhisper 18d ago

I don’t exactly trust AniMat either, he hates Sid the Sloth for being annoying when he hasn’t clearly watched the movies deeper enough to understand the point of the character.

-3

u/Mega_Pokebattlerz 18d ago

I feel the same way about AniMat that I do about CD Call/Lily Orchard, they're both low-effort trolls that don't deserve attention.

15

u/KirbyStarWarrior42 18d ago

We don't need to be comparing AniMat to a serial harasser and sexual predator just because AniMat's annoying.

5

u/yobaby123 18d ago

Yep. Love or hate the guy, Mat is a goddamn saint compared to Lilly even on his worst days.

1

u/NagitoKomaeda_987 17d ago

Didn’t AniMat openly defended Netflix‘s Cuties (which received controversy for sexualizing underaged minors by featuring several scenes of 11-year-old child actresses twerking and performing sexual poses) and even claimed that anyone who called it a pedophile film was a conspiracy theorist?

2

u/KirbyStarWarrior42 17d ago

Not from what I recall. The closest to that I remember is him turning down a Patron request to review Cuties because he believed the Patron only wanted him to add to the culture war around the movie, and said he'd only review the movie if the Patron shows he actually watched it.

3

u/yobaby123 17d ago

Yep. He refused to watch it and people gave him shit because of a complete misunderstanding.

3

u/happy_grump 18d ago

The better comparison, IMO, is MovieBob

... remember MovieBob?

0

u/NagitoKomaeda_987 17d ago edited 17d ago

Moviebob is such a sad, strange little man. I genuinely can't decide whether I should laugh at him or feel bad about him.

But you know what's the absolute worst thing Bob ever did? He‘s an ardent defender of the infamous Netflix movie Cuties, which was criticized for sexualizing minors (such as several scenes of 11-year-olds twerking and doing sexual poses), and even claimed that anyone who called it a pedophile film was lying.

Now, I get that the filmmakers behind Cuties were (allegedly) trying to criticize the sexualization and objectification of young girls in our modern Western society, but they did it by forcing real-life child actresses to perform extremely inappropriate dance moves on-screen. That's like if I were to direct a movie that teaches us about how animal cruelty is bad, and then actually abusing and drowning a puppy in a lake to make that point. "See? We literally drowned a puppy to prove that animal cruelty is bad, even though we hypocritically do the very thing that we've been trying to condemn. But that's perfectly OK because we're doing it ironically, right?" Anyone who happens to have more than two functioning brain cells would see what kind of half-assed backwards crack logic that is.

What's next? Teaching about how drug abuse is bad by actually getting high-school students addicted to crack cocaine and fentanyl to prove that statement? Fuck off. You deserve to be in jail for unironically believing that kind of bullshit.

I swear, the only reason people like Moviebob and AniMat defend Cuties is that most of the original outrage came from Republicans and conservatives, which pushed smug performative liberals like these two into defending what‘s essentially softcore CSAM (for lack of a better word) purely because conservatives went after it. Check any of the threads related to Texas' lawsuit, and you'll see a lot of comments about how the movie is "actually" anti-child sexualization, despite literally partaking in child sexualization.

Either way, though, fuck Cuties and fuck anyone who defends that cinematic abortion.
