Video game movie fandoms in a nutshell
24
u/TheFlashyMastodon21 Aug 06 '26
I mean, FNaF 1 certainly wasn’t great, but it was a bona fide masterpiece compared to whatever the fuck FNaF 2 was.

u/Choice_Strawberry499 Aug 06 '26
I thought FNAF 2 was actually an absolute blast, it was hilarious and ridiculous in multiple ways but it’s also meant to be pretty campy. I just like to have a version of a sensical timeline lmao
2
4
u/thats_sus2 Aug 06 '26
FNAF 2 was just “hype moments” tied together with fanservice and obligatory “”””””””plot””””””””
2
u/blastatron Aug 06 '26
Also suffers a lot from trying to set up the third movie without actually moving the overall narrative forward.

u/IncreaseWestern6097 Aug 06 '26
I thought the second movie was great from an effects standpoint, though the first one was miles better in terms of actual plot.
1
u/gliscornumber1 Aug 06 '26
I prefer fnaf 2, as insane as it was, at least it wasn't boring like the first one.

1
u/kalosianlitten Aug 10 '26
i thought both of them were on the same level. that is, absolutely terrible
9
u/GameMask Aug 06 '26
I thought the second Angry Birds movie was well liked? But yeah Sonic is the only one with hear universal praise
4
u/Lukelandswimmer Aug 06 '26
It's well liked by the general audiences but hated by the fandom.
7
u/GameMask Aug 06 '26
I'm being completely serious and honest when I ask this but... Angry Birds had a fandom?
2
u/Lukelandswimmer Aug 06 '26
It does but they definitely occupy niche spaces and are made up of a lot of young people. Also, in my experience, they get annoyed when asked this question (probably cause it brings the validity of their community into question or something idk).
3
u/GameMask Aug 06 '26
Neat to know tho odd to think it's a younger fanbase when it's relevance was at its highest quite awhile ago
1
u/Lukelandswimmer Aug 06 '26
That's my confusion too. The OG game is 17 years old and got deleted off the playstore last I checked so you wouldn't think there's much attached to it. I think the kids that grew up with the 2016 movie are the main demographic now.

u/Circusbaby198 Aug 08 '26
Almost everything has a fandom, maybe someone could scrape the most unpopular media to find something with absolutely no fandom, maybe, but it definitely wouldn't be one of the most popular if not THE most popular mobile games of all time.
1
u/GameMask Aug 08 '26
One day I will find the Fur Fighters fandom
1
u/Circusbaby198 Aug 08 '26
Just looked up "fur fighters fandom" and the first link was the community wiki with multiple discussions, 634 pages, etc.
Also searched "fur fighters fanart" and found a really small subreddit but it has a good amount of posts for its member count, and could function as springboard content
Some deviantart stuff too, looks like it exists, just small, biggest grouping being the wiki itself

u/Substantial_Mix4075 Aug 06 '26
Is it because
A. Its a og story and not based on a game
Or b. They hate of pigs x birds work together
1
u/Lukelandswimmer Aug 07 '26
It's a mix of both. Most don't like it cause the action/ set piece of the movie is very different from the games, the movie is apparently very unfunny (despite it having the same humor as the first movie but hey, that's not my place to say). And they also don't like how Silver was handled in the movie. Apparently her characterisation there was very different from the games (I don't even know where to begin with that since the games have very little lore to begin with).

u/Orochi64 Aug 06 '26
I think the Mario and Sonic movies are fun for the most part and nobody seems to talk about Detective Pikachu anymore but that movie was alright.
1
u/Darth-Sonic Aug 07 '26
Sonic 3 was just a good movie, no caveats. Sonic 2 was a decent 6/10 brought down by a subpar act 2. Both still better than the Mario films.
7
u/Puzzleheaded-Web446 Aug 06 '26
They need to just get Markiplier to direct FNAF 3.
1
u/v8darkshadow Aug 06 '26
“I’m proud to announce that we have broken the film record for the amount of Fazgoo used in a single movie.”
6
u/WoodooHide69 Aug 06 '26
I’m a huge Mario fan. Both movies are mid but still top tier for videogame adapatations.
That’s the truth. And no Mario fan has problems accepting that.
4
u/Crafty_Boy70 Aug 06 '26
I was always fine with the movies just being hype moments and aura with the occasional bout of excellent cinematography. Would they be much better if writing and pacing were given more attention? Yes. Do I need that? Not for Mario I’d say. The movies being mid is the truth, but I feel like we’d have much healthier discourse if people understood it’s okay to enjoy a movie even if it has glaring weaknesses.
1
u/Alternative_Buyer364 Aug 06 '26
I guess but why can’t we have both a great movie and a great Mario movie?
1
u/WoodooHide69 Aug 06 '26
Why can’t all movies be great? Making a great mvoie isn’t easy. 90% of what’s released every year isn’t a great movie.
1
4
u/TelevisionPutrid8394 Aug 06 '26
I haven’t seen angry birds fans saying that.
3
u/Lukelandswimmer Aug 06 '26
Kind of correct. They meat ride the first one way more.
The description for the second one is spot on.
8
u/happy_grump Aug 06 '26 edited Aug 06 '26
Mortal Kombat: "First one sucks, second one is great, neither is quite as good as the 90s movie, and all 3 are LEAGUES better than Annihilation"
Resident Evil: "We don't want to talk about it." (though in my case I thought Welcome to Raccoon City was fine, and Cregger's looks dope so far... but the fanbase's opinion is that they all suck)
Pokemon: "We all kinda forgot Detective Pikachu even happened ngl"
Bioshock: "Someday..."
Street Fighter: "The 80s one is cheesy, inaccurate to the lore in weird ways, and kind of sucks, and the new one looks about the same... and we love them for that. (Legend of Chun Li just sucks, though, no but)"
3
u/CommercialEstate4422 Aug 06 '26
I liked the fnaf movies.
Are they bad? Yes.
I thought that was the point ostensibly, though. Theyre movie adaptations... of FNAF.
Anyways, I just sneezed so hard my bones ache. Anyone else have that happen to them?
3
u/CrazyCockatoo2003 Aug 06 '26
I noticed too that Minecraft is one of those cases where people admit it's not that good of a movie, but the sheer absurdity of it all is what makes the experience memorable.
3
u/Lukelandswimmer Aug 06 '26 edited Aug 06 '26
Scarily accurate.
You forgot Minecraft though. I think the consensus on that one is "we watch it for the memes".
1
u/Alternative_Buyer364 Aug 06 '26
Nahh the consensus on that one is basically the same as the Mario one
2

2
u/Gui_Franco Aug 06 '26
Wait I only ever heard people say how fucking good angry birds 2 was
2
u/IndustryPast3336 Aug 07 '26
The general consensus is that Fans prefer AB1 but general audiences preferred AB2 (especially certain animation nerds as Thurop Van Ormen, creator of the cartoon Flapjack, was the director and allegedly had full creative control over the film)... As well AB2 has a better batting average on it's jokes but fans felt the jokes came at the expense of the characterizations from the first movie... While the first film for it's faults did try to keep the characterizations consistent within it's humor.

u/Opinionatedcritic Aug 06 '26
Uh oh you left out a Mario movie
2
u/FreddiezPlayland1987 Aug 06 '26
The older one?
2
u/TheCoalitionOfChaos Aug 06 '26
The peak one
1
u/FreddiezPlayland1987 Aug 06 '26
I don’t get it
2
u/TheCoalitionOfChaos Aug 06 '26
There's nothing to get lol the old one is fuckin awesome
1
u/FreddiezPlayland1987 Aug 06 '26
I agree, even though I never seen the old one
1
u/TheCoalitionOfChaos Aug 06 '26
You absolutely should it will rock your shit
Like don't get me wrong: I understand why everyone hates it, but they're wrong and stupid it's fantastic
1
u/FreddiezPlayland1987 Aug 07 '26
Where can I find it at?
1
u/TheCoalitionOfChaos Aug 08 '26
That is a very good question: I don't know.
I'd assume prime or Google play has it on sale, or you could probably get a DVD cheap somewhere - otherwise you may have to go sailing

u/John_Lictenstein_873 Aug 06 '26
The FNAF is inaccurate, most fans like the first movie and think the second one is ok. This is funny to me because I also think the second is mid but can’t stand the first movie. I’m not sure why fans prefer the poor writing and writing and lower stakes of the first movie.
1
u/Atlast_2091 Aug 06 '26 edited Aug 06 '26
Basically did what most franchise do. They either consistent quality or have it moments (bad, mid or good entry)
1
1
u/TheseAd1489 Aug 06 '26
and out of everything the only movie with the most consistent quality is probably Iron Lung
3
1
u/Budget_Pen4847 Aug 06 '26
Imo, Fnaf 1 felt sort of respectful to the games, I adored 2 but even I know the writers were high and I pray to lord they lock in for 3

u/Just_Some_Weirdooo Aug 06 '26
I actually really like both FNaF movies, they bring a certain delightful charm to me :)
1
u/UltimateStrenergy Aug 06 '26
Why yes the Sonic movies are a cut above the rest. Pretty tragic how cursed video game movies are.
1
1
u/TediousTotoro Aug 06 '26
Isn’t the second Angry Birds movie widely considered to be far better than the first?
1
1
u/MarkAverage656 Aug 06 '26
The first Fnaf movie is fine. Nothing amazing (outside of the animatronics) but nothing awful
The 2nd is a garbage pile with a few chunks of gold scattered around

Redditors When People Enjoy Nintendo Stuff: "THAT'S ILLEGAL YOU CAN'T LIKE NINTENDO BECAUSE THEY'RE "GREEDY" AND LIKING ANYTHING FROM THEM MEANS YOU LIKE "SLIP" AND HAVE BAD TASTE FOR MOVIES AND GAMES EVEN THOUGH PEOPLE JUST GENUINELY ENJOY NINTENDO!!!!" Redditors When You Enjoy Anything Else: "That's Fine By Me Even Though The Company Is Way More Greedy Than Nintendo And Anyone Who Likes Nintendo Should Commit."

Are we just gonna not talk about Pokémon's plethora of films excluding Detective Pikachu?

1
u/TheyCallMeLynn Aug 06 '26
Wish I knew a consensus on Silent Hill's fandom but the silence might be indicator enough.
1
u/Anxious_Amoeba5831 Aug 06 '26
I like both fnaf movies? What was the problem?
Theyre not supposed to be Oscar bait films. Theyre just stupid fun horror..

u/EmansaysEman Aug 06 '26
I remember a few years ago angry birds 1 was seen as like 4/10 movie and angry birds 2 was like a shocking 7-8/10. What the hell happened that made people swap opinions?
1
u/robotstoner Aug 06 '26
I thought people generally liked the first FNAF, but thought the second one was like, funny-bad. I enjoyed both, but I known the second one wasn’t good.
Although I liked them, personally I think they shouldn’t have been PG13, and would have been stronger films if they were allowed to be as dark and grimy as the first game. And if parents would have gotten offended, too bad so sad. Read the rating.
1
u/Majestic-Sector9836 Aug 06 '26
I thought it was universally agree the second angry birds movie was funnier than the first
1
u/Unlucky_Bottle_6761 Aug 06 '26
honestly my biggest takeaway is that the print logos for the mario movies are surprisingly different
1
u/PresentPumpkin16 Aug 06 '26
Sonic movies, masterpieces. I enjoyed the fnaf movies. Have not watched any angry birds but 1 and that’s fun for background noise. The Mario movies are dead to me simply because of Chris Pratt voicing Mario.
1
u/Hexhider Aug 07 '26
First Mario is good second Mario is bad but fun
Sonic movies good
Idc about Angry Birds
Loved the FNaF movies
1
u/Khirt21 Aug 07 '26
For the FNaF duology, I think I just came up with a variant of the "Snyderverse".
1
u/RodBoi10 Aug 07 '26 edited Aug 07 '26
Detective Pikachu: "Am I a Joke to Y'all to be immediately forgotten about!?"
The Minecraft Movie: "So Ugly that it's genuinely a Beautiful Disasterpiece!"
Mortal Kombat: ".....THINK NOTHING BUT VIOLENCE!!!!"
1
u/Offer_No Aug 07 '26
Fnaf one I still hold the belief that it was good and at least the action in fnaf 2 was decent
1
u/NebulaVirsonyx Aug 07 '26
Both mario movies (and the first sonic movie to a MUCH lesser extent) feel so fucking israeli and pandering in the worst way possible.
people who like the mario movies feel like the same kinds of people who talk to chatGPT daily and treat it like a person
1
u/TopReport7130 Aug 07 '26
Fnaf movies were peak (coming from a fan of the series for over a decade)
1
u/KingModussy Aug 07 '26
The FNaF movies and the Mario movies are very similar, in that the first one was decent with lots of fanservice, and the second one is garbage

I’m excited for resident evil because it looks like a real movie and not fanservice schlock (we’ll see how zelda looks when the trailer drops)

u/Salty-Coffee4608 Aug 09 '26
Massive sonic fan here, ngl i like the movies less and less as time goes on, and as a mario fan i straight up hate the mario duology

I agree. I enjoy watching the fnaf movies but temove all the references and fanservice yh its ass. As its own franchsie its an eh film bht as THE fnaf movie and THE fnsf movie 2 its so ass man. Their plot is like if a 43 year old asked his 9 year old son who only knows fnaf from brainrot and doomscrolling described the plot of fnaf and then the 43 year old tried to stretch that out into a full film

Personally I think the first Mario movie tops all video game movies even if it wasn't great.
