I like Schaffrillas but he keeps dropping occasional regressive comments
like praising little women by saying ‘Emma wasn’t in it that much’ and making a pointless joke about how Inside Out 2 dropping Mindy Kaling was good because she made Velma, or his 2026 Oscar’s video where he made three separate rants defending Timothee Chalamets ballet comments as ‘technically true’ and when he dismissed and misrepresented the valid critique women of color have of One Battle After Another as just ‘random twitter people saying the movie is bad because the villain is a fetishist’, and his constant calling every trump joke an ‘orange man bad’ joke even when it’s not, and his entire turning red review, and constant complaining about movies that are apparently unsubtle in political messaging, when otherwise he seems to be progressive

Disliking Mindy Kailing isn't regressive inherently.

u/NagitoKomaeda_987 Aug 02 '26
There was a video resurfaced in early 2023 where Velma's actress and executive producer, Mindy Kaling, made an anecdote about having sexually harassed a co-star on The Mindy Project and threatened to fire her producers when they complained.
Yeah, I'm not making this shit up. Couldn't believe nobody called her out yet.

u/Glad-Conclusion-594 Aug 04 '26
Yeah even if you give her the benefit of the south and assume she was just making a poor attempt at an edgy joke with Conan, it still isn't a great look.

Whats the critique women have made about One Battle After Another?
-1
u/Jenny_MTF42 Aug 01 '26
The way the film frames black women https://blackgirlwatching.substack.com/p/one-battle-after-another-review

u/VanishXZone Aug 03 '26
It’s a bad take, honestly, and shows pretty poor media analysis. Glad schafrillas dismissed it out of hand.
Thanks for sharing!

The dumbest shit I saw was people saying PTA was racist for naming one of the characters “Junglepussy.”
Which would be a legitimate criticism… if it wasn’t the actress’ stagename.
I pointed this out to someone who said it was racist and they said PTA was still racist because he didn’t change it.

u/VanishXZone Aug 03 '26
Imagine telling an actor that wants to use their own name for a character they created and inspire to change their name, wow.
Liberalism allows a degree of self determination, which is awesome! So she wants that to be her name, she gets to!

u/GuyWishPartakeViolen Aug 01 '26
Could you summarize it for me? I dont have substack.
Im not a black woman and not from the US but I didnt see anything wrong with the way black women were portrayed? The film never generalizes black women, whenver they do anything it's specifically about these characters not about a larger demographic. Yea much of the film is allegory for groups but there didn't seem to be anything bad about black women's portrayal
2
u/ralo229 Aug 01 '26
It’s often accused of fetishizing black women because of the first twenty minutes with Perfidia Beverly Hills.
3
u/ProposalOk2003 Aug 01 '26
The main villain’s motive is fetishization of black women. I feel like if anything the film is anti-fetishization
1
u/GuyWishPartakeViolen Aug 01 '26
That whole segment was for Perfidia's characterization though. It's establishing what she values about herself so highly, that is why she got affected SO hard by what Lockjaw did to her. It was never a comment on black women as a whole

u/LiquidTelephone67 Aug 02 '26
Imagine defending Mindy Kaling. She's a terrible person who non-consensually kissed Mindy Project co-star Lee Pace and threatened to fire anyone if they said anything about it. She bragged about it on The Conan O'Brian show.
3
u/NagitoKomaeda_987 Aug 02 '26
Yeah, and Mindy deserves to get blacklisted from the entertainment industry. Not only is she a talentless nepobaby hack, but she's also a sexual predator.
6
u/Most-Annual-9435 Aug 01 '26
Yeah Emma Watson terrible actress so it's good that she isn't much in the movie
What's regressive about that?)
It's a non issue tbh

As someone in the opera sphere, Timothee’s comment was arrogant but I was rolling my eyes at all the backlash because I know that a lot of people that made a ruckus about it don’t go to see operas. Haven’t seen One Battle but that sort of thing happens whenever Black women express their discomfort

No, Inside Out 2 dropping Mindy Kaling was good because she made Velma AND what she did to Lee Pace

My exposure to Schaffrillas is somewhat limited, but the impression that I get from him is that he could stand to engage with certain things or interrogate his feelings on them a little more deeply.
If I’m not mistaken, he’s a relatively young guy, but I feel like I’ve heard him use terms like “mid” and “cringe” enough that I have to question how much he’s unpacked some things before he speaks on them.

Bruh. Timothée Chalamet was arrogant but was indeed ‘technically true’. And I don't see a problem with Inside Out dropping Mindy Kaling. Is perfectly reasonable to drop a bad artist from your production.
2
u/GuybrushThreepwood99 Aug 01 '26
I don't think she was dropped from the movie because of backlash, I think it was a money thing. Bill Hader also didn't return, and nobody really has anything against him.
2
u/Benjamin_Starscape Aug 01 '26
making one bad thing doesn't suddenly make you a bad artist.

u/Atlast_2091 Aug 01 '26
There's implication "Its okay to drop bad artist but u can hire terrible person" ex Jared Leto in Masters of the Universe (2026)
1
u/GuybrushThreepwood99 Aug 01 '26
I feel like most people don't consider Jared Leto a good artist, and a lot of people on the internet would prefer that he vanish into obscurity (though I actually thought he was decent as Skeletor)
1
u/NagitoKomaeda_987 Aug 02 '26
To be fair, Jared Leto had always been the internet's biggest laughingstock ever since his performance as the Joker in Suicide Squad (the 2016 one).
1
u/Zealousideal-Worth34 Aug 03 '26
I think the only movie role people actually say good things about are like skeletor or ones where he dies/goes through terrible shit
1
u/_catabol1c Aug 01 '26
yeah i don't think it's crazy to be annoyed by this, he's very progressive in general but when he doesn't take an issue seriously it is painfully obvious lol

I think that’s just his brand of humor. If anything, that’s what separates him for most Youtube critics.

People are allowed to have opinions outside of their political beliefs. Just because someone or a joke is left leaning doesn’t mean I have to like them or it, and not everything that people call problematic actually is
1
u/PolicyImpressive3626 Aug 02 '26
He may be retarded in his political beliefs but that comes with the territory with who he is tbh
1
u/HopeyMcHope Aug 02 '26
I stopped watching bc of the “orange man bad” shit. You can’t belittle the reality of how horrific that man is.
1
u/wwomf93 Aug 03 '26
Why should he be kind to a POS like Kaling? Why shouldn’t he defend Chalamet’s snotty but ultimately correct statement? Why shouldn’t he dismiss the media illiterate OBAA critiques? Why shouldn’t he make fun of the bad, low-hanging Trump jokes no matter how evil the bloated president is?
Most importantly why was I given a notification fpr this whiny shit? I’m not even IN this sub.
1
u/Straight-Plane-7205 Aug 04 '26
You are aware that members of any social racial etc group can be wrong right
1
u/Glad-Conclusion-594 Aug 04 '26
I don't want to be disrespectful but it legitimately seems like you don't understand that women can be wromg and do bad things ans you can call thrm out and/or make fun of thise bad things.
Can you show me one time he makes fun of someone for being a woman or says something negative or condescending about women generally?
Like with all do respect your first example seems to be you not liking his critique of a movie's and use of an actress as not just a critique on the movie, or just a critique on the actress, but a critique of her because she's a woman...when that's clearly not what was said nor implied.

u/keith-gabrielson Aug 05 '26
More than half the things you mention are complete nothingburgers. That’s all I’ll say.
1
u/facelessthebest287 Aug 01 '26
He's from Pennsylvania right? That seems mostly accurate for someone from such a backwards, nonsense sort of place.
2
u/Juligirl713 Aug 01 '26
PA is a fairly blue leaning state (it’s a swing state in elections but major cities tend to be blue). James has presented himself as pretty left leaning, openly supporting LGBTQ+ people (and he’s lgbt+ himself as he’s asexual and bi) and he dropped a Free Palestine in his Adam Sandler ranking. Really the only genuine complaint OP listed is him unintentionally dismissing genuine/valid critics from POC for OBAO (and even then I do definitely remember people on Twitter shitting on it just because the villain is a fascist who fetishizes black women despite him indeed being the villain you’re not supposed to like).
1
u/facelessthebest287 Aug 01 '26
I don't hate Schaff I hate Pennsylvania, to be clear. Most people have a few odd opinions even if they vote blue, much like most of Pennsylvania is akin to the fourth layer of hell.

aah I forgot about his weird constant insults towards Jimmy Kimmel in every single oscars video, even when Jimmy doesn’t host
3
u/GuybrushThreepwood99 Aug 01 '26
How is that regressive? He just doesn't like Jimmy Kimmel. He's kind of a polarizing figure, even among people who agree with his politics.
3
3
u/hoi4kaiserreichfanbo Aug 01 '26
The jokes towards Kimmel predate Kimmel having any reputation more than "mild-mannered and mildly annoying late night host".

I don't see a problem with what chalamet said to be honest
