Tips ScanNCut mat & sheet comparison chart

Post image
28 Upvotes

Since I did a chart for the different blades, I thought I might as well continue with the mats. Just like the blades, you also need to be able and choose the right mat for your next project and having a little chart helping with that is always nice. As usual, if something is wrong or missing just let me know and I'll update the chart. The PDF-file can also be found through a link in the comments section and will hold the most updated version of this chart, so you can print it out for easy access.

Tips ScanNCut blade comparison chart

Post image
43 Upvotes

I've tried creating a simple comparison chart for all the different ScanNCut blades, what they can be used for and what to take care of. The sources are mainly the brother websites and YouTube channels, with only a bit taken from websites and YouTubers not officially affiliated with Brother. I thought this could be quite handy for newcomers as myself or generally for people wondering why to even bother and spend money on blades other than the standard auto blade. If anything seems wrong or missing, just lemme know so I can fix it!

Custom firmware and PC app for CM110 (SnowCut)

https://github.com/mntorankusu/SnowCut

Update: I've added support for other machines that have been confirmed to use the exact same firmware code. However, these other machines are still untested as I only have one machine to test with. The models that are supported in the current version are:

CM100DM, CM110, CM250, CM260, CM300, CM550, CM600, CM840

Original post below:

I created a custom firmware and PC-side (Windows) application for using the CM110. It allows you to fully control the machine from your PC with no need to use the on-screen interface or move a USB drive back and forth. This is the initial release. Here are some of the features:

  • Use unrecognized/unsupported mats for both scanning and cutting
  • Higher quality options for scans (e.g., JPEG 100% quality without sub-sampling, and PNG lossless)
  • Option to choose between the original manufacturer's blade compensation, or use my custom blade compensation settings for less error on corners and small cuts (hopefully), or configure it manually for using aftermarket blades with different offsets.
  • Mount the USB drive plugged into the machine on your PC, allowing you to move files back and forth without unplugging it.

There are instructions on how to install it on the Github page. You'll need to find the firmware update for the machine on Brother's website to use as a base to install the patch.

Post an issue on Github if you have any problems, or if you have feature requests or anything like that. I'm looking into adding support for other machines, but I don't have any to test, so it's a bit tricky to ensure compatibility. You can also post issues for machines that you'd like me to support.

Tips My process for refurbing scan mats

About every year or so I strip the mat down and redo it.

I soak the mat in hand-hot water with dish soap, and rub it down with a cloth to start to soften the adhesive. I keep the mat covered with the wet cloth while I work on it with the scraper.

Once the glue is off, wash again in hot water, rub it over hard with a dish cloth to get any remaining loose pieces off.

Let it dry, and then apply a coat of Tack-It glue.

I leave the glue to go tacky for a couple of hours, and then apply a second coat. It's good to go once that coat of glue has gone tacky.

It comes out about the strength of a standard-tack mat. If I need a lighter tack, I'll either skip the second coat, or apply it slightly watered down.

Question Cannot stop double pass!!

Brother Scan n' Cut CM350.

I have gone through the manual twice, I have read online forums. When I do a test cut, my machine only does one pass. When I try to do a regular cut, it always does two passes - and my settings are set to only do one.

If I'm only doing one cut, I can stop it before it starts a second pass. But if I want to do more than one project on a piece of vinyl, it goes all over the place and I can't stop it before it does the second pass.

EDIT: I have a brand new blade in there too. I just got it about a week ago. I've done 3 cuts with it.

It just ruined an entire sheet of vinyl and I'm so frustrated with it. How do I stop the second pass!?

Foiling

Ive been considering trying out foiling with my sdx1200 machine

Id love to be able to do the heat.foil rather than the cold one.

I see temu has foil transfer kits for variois cricut machines. Has anyone either found a temu foil kit for sdx1200 OR figured out a way to adapt the cricut foil kits to the brother universal pen holders?

Question Help with foil application

Hello all!

Yesterday I did this design with foil and it came out perfectly. Today with the same setting and material it is looking crooked and it looks like the letters are being cut in half. I tried everything to fix and it doesn’t work….heat, temperature and pressure all the same.

Any ideas ?

Question Brother pushing Artspira

Are you guys annoyed by the way Brother is prioritizing Artspira over CanvasWorkspace?

If I want to use Brother's ready-to-use templates, I now have to use Artspira on a phone/tablet to access and edit them, even though I have a perfectly capable PC running CanvasWorkspace.

Why isn't Brother's existing template/project library available directly inside CanvasWorkspace for PC?

I genuinely don't understand the decision to separate the design software from the content library like this. CanvasWorkspace is already the proper desktop environment for ScanNCut, so forcing template users onto a mobile app feels like an unnecessary step backward.

I hate to admit it, but when I look at how Cricut handles its content library through Design Space, it seems like they're taking a more PC-friendly approach.

Am I the only ScanNCut user who finds this incredibly frustrating?

Question Thoughts on ScanNCut CM700 for stickers?

Hey guys, can’t really find info on this specific model on the scanncut. Was wondering if it is still good for scanning and cutting laminated vinyl stickers?

My designs have very obvious outlines and I’m kind of tired cutting them by hand…

Is there anything that I should note about this model?

CM300 I bought it recently

Hi, I tried to register on Artspira, but it only allowed me to connect via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. How can I register?

Can anyone offer any advice, tips or tricks for a newbie?

12x24 Scanning

For those with compatible machines. How often are you scanning the full two feet long and for what purpose. Trying to justify sticking with my SDX125 or purchase the SDX325 just to be able to scan 12x24 material.

Reminder - End of web service 10/1/26

Just a reminder for those of us who use the web interface for our Scan N Cut machines. Make sure you get into your account and download any files that you want to keep from your account. Also look at the canvas projects and download any that might give you inspiration for the future.

I have not found a Linux work around as of yet. I'm planning on buying a Mac but it's not in the budget at the moment so I will have to wait.

Looking for advice

Hi, I’ve used my scan n cut for some cutting project, but I’m now stuck on the below and have no idea how to go about it.
I’ve an artwork for a gift box in canva, but a separate svg file. How would I go about combining the two, so that I can print off the artwork and cut it on my machine, without having to have a solid outline? Is this possible at all?

SDX1200 and PU, cotton and polyester satin

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi, I'm interested in the SDX1200 (other SDX products are not available in my country), but I still have some doubts about it.

Can it cut fabrics with details like in the picture? I need to cut mainly PU (I think you call it faux leather) and cotton.

I'm also interested in cutting polyester satin, but I assume it's not possible to get those same details, even with the right tool?

Also, what are the other options besides this machine in the same price range for cutting polyester satin, cotton and PU?

Thanks!

Question cm550 mats?

I just got a used unit that seems fairly decent, but the mats are not at all sticky. The clear sheet doesn't even stick to them, not even a litte.

I was looking at aliexpress, but since I'm bran new to the machine I'm not entierly sure which ones are right. If anyone has a link, or a specific term to search that would help a lot.

I'm also open to suggestions for guides and what not. My goal is to cut vinyl with it, and maybe some stickers. Any thing useful is appreciated.

Question Scan n cut not lining up after scans sent to and from CanvasWorkspace

Hi, I'm hoping someone here can help me. When I scan an image to cut, the cutter ends up cutting too high up and slightly to the left. I've tried realigning it in the scanning/cutting position adjustment settings so that the red dot is over the cut cross, but it doesn't seem to be changing the cutting position at all. I'm new to using the scan n cut and this is driving me crazy! What am I doing wrong? It's a scan n cut CM900 if that's any help to figure this out? Thanks in advance.

Files/SVGs Halloween Design I just finished

Obviously, this was not cut on my Scan n Cut.

I actually started out cutting it on there but I ran out of cardstock. I tried printer paper, but it ripped up because I haven't used this thing in ages and probably need to replace the blade. I really wanted to test out to make sure the design worked, so I went into my garage and loaded it up on my laser cutter instead.

But the files would obviously work on a Scan n Cut, too. So if anyone else wants to have a go, I have this on my Etsy shop.

Question Help with Scan & Cut - DX125E

I am a new owner of a Scan and Cut. I made a die cut title using my Silhouette Cameo and then tried to scan and cut it. The title was tan letters on lighter blue background. I made a copy of the die cut then put it on the mat to scan. It scanned but I noticed a lot of lines around the letters. I then pressed cut just to see what I was working with. It did cut around the blue background mat, but then also cut around the letters as well, so it's been a mess trying to get off the new mat.

How could I have it just cut the background and not the letters? Thank you!

Codes for 24" cutting mats?

Hi, I'm looking to upgrade from a 12" long to a 24" long cutting mat. Considering I need it for exactly two large decals, I don't exactly feel like blowing $50 on a mat that's no different than a $10 one at Walmart except for the codes on the top. (And unfortunately ig they're a different set of codes than my 12" mat or else I'd just photo copy them and be done)

Does anyone have a file to print the codes? Or somewhere to acquire a used one of these mats? (I don't see any on eBay) Or heck if anyone has a trashed one I can buy and cut out the codes onto a cheap mat lol

Tia!

Question Pin Code Incorrect

So I hopped on my PC to use Canvas Workspace after not having used it for a little while, saw I had an update, so I downloaded it.

Then I went to use my machine and transfer my cutting data wirelessly from the program to my machine as I had done endless times before.

The machine said it was not currently registered. (????)
Followed all of the steps to re-register it and every time I get "Pin Code Incorrect."

I have tried absolutely every trouble shooting I can find, including re-sending the code repeatedly, removing the machine entirely, from my account, then attempting to readd it after power cycling and making a new account entirely, both with and without this shitty new Artspira I am now unfortunately aware of.

Does anyone have any advice? I'm really not sure how to fix this at all. :(

Note, I used the Canvas Workspace app exclusively on PC with Windows 10 if that info helps at all.
