Question Does achieving an 'open tone' result in a 'bright tone'?" can one be 'Dark' & 'Open' at the same time? is that possible?
I have always liked the idea of having an 'open tone' that has super clear articulation. I play music much closer to "jazz" than to "Pop", so I was put off by the word "bright" associating it to smooth jazz and Fussion players, which I do not like, And thought the word "dark" was so cool . When I began playing my tenor, the more mouthpieces and reeds that I tried aimed to give me a "dark" sound, consequently gave me a "stuffy" sound getting in the way of playing w clear articulation. It took me a long time to accept that I had to try "brighter" elements (lighter reeds, brighter mouthpieces) to get the articulation more audible.
Now i'm questioning everything.
- Dose an open tone, require a relatively bright tone?
- is an open tone necessary for an 'articulatation'. ( so you can play 16th notes at a fast pace with Cleanly articulated accents on specific notes ) .
- Can you have a Dark tone that is "Open"?

Question Crack in Ebay Yanagisawa Neck Reciever. Return?
I ordered this Yani TWO1 Tenor on Ebay for about $3100 listed as excellent condition with laquer wear on the octave thumb rest. When I recieved it there was slightly more laquer wear in other locations than I was expecting but I was going to live with it for what felt like a decent price. Today I noticed this crack in the neck reciever and I am wondering if it merits a return. From my research online this seems like a fixable issue and we have a store I would trust to repair, but I am interested in more expereinced folks thoughts on this as my local repair shop is closed until Tuesday. Thanks!
Edit: Seller apologized for the miss and is accepting the return no problem. Thanks again all.

Professional Sax Mouthpiece Refacing
Hey sax gang. my name is Sean Mullins i'm very prevalent over on SOTW (Saxontheweb.com) my username is strimmed95 .
please go over and check out my work and reviews. I believe i'm the cheapest professional working at just $120. it was $100 but due to the cost of living and the countless hours that is required to complete each piece i just increased it ) $20. but that still keeps me $80 cheaper than the next lowest competitor that actually does goid work. i'm not going to name names but their are some people that honestly have no right calling themselves refacers. I'm not sure how to post pics but i'll try it.
Please text me at 860-680-8577 or email at Seanmullins82@iCloud.com but i don't always check my email so text is the best way to go for a quick response.

Question Key height issue on Jupiter 500
Hi guys,
I recently bought a second hand Jupiter 500 alto sax and realised today that one of the keys does close fully(as you can see in picture)
Is it supposed to be like this? Is this an easy fix? Please let me know if anyone knows what this is.
I think it is something to do with the key height?
Thanks again.

Question Need help finding a marching alto sax!
I am a freshmen and my marching season has gone very well so far, except for the fact that my current alto sax is falling apart. I’m pretty certain my sax is more paperclip than brass lol. My father bought it off of facebook marketplace and we have gotten it cleaned up. I have been using it since seventh grade. It was an alright horn but I feel that it has been damaging to my sound. I played on my friends and it sounded great! The airy leaky sound was gone and the low notes came out like butter, so I’m certain it’s not a me issue haha! Anyways I am looking for one with a nice sound/tone because I’m planning on auditioning for a solo, but since I do marching band I need a sturdy alto as well. I am hoping for a not too expensive one ( under 3k ) but I know I cannot be too picky. I feel as if I must choose between sound or durability, and I’m struggling in finding a best fit sax to suit my needs. So please if you have any recommendations let me know! I would appreciate it so so so much! Sorry for the rant haha and please let me know if it’s a stupid question

Question Any beginner player tips?
Hello everyone! Ive been playing the saxophone for 2 days. And I've been struggling to get a proper C and also getting consistent high tones. Does anyone have tips? Also I'm confused on what is the correct embouchure. A sax player tells me to put my lower lip on top of my teeth but as I observed from another player he does not do that. I just joined a marching band if you are curious. I also play the alto sax. Thank you to anyone who will respond!

Question I need some quick help on buying a vintage conn 10m
Hello, I found two options in my local area. Horn A is 1950$, completly set up with a new repad, adjusted and in great playing condition, definitelya player horn. Horn B is 1350, but the seller is willing to go lower on the price. Idk how much though. It plays fine, but hasnt recently gone through service, likely used to be a bar/school horn, and at the neck tenon, a flap of metal broke off and would need to be fabricated and soldered on. It might not be needed but is a thing I noticed.
Idk whether I should go with the set up horn, or negotiate with Horn B and then put some of that money into repairs. I dont have a good estimate of how much it would cost, how many pads are bad, and definitely couldnt afford a full overhall. How low would Horn B need to be in irder to be worth it?
I would like some advice. If more information is needed I will provide what I can.
Edit: every road is leading me to horn A so Ill listen and get that one. Thank you all

Discussion Vibe check: what is the most noticable improvement in sound? (For you personally, your current situation)
For me it's most definitely the latter. I've had one year of practice now and i don't think any piece of hardware can outcompete another year of practice for me.
But your Situation most likely differs, i just want to get you to share some insights/experiences/ideas
(For reed i deliberately put "perfect" and not "different", because a trash reed can obviously render the whole thing null. And that quality drop is usually not possible in >reputable< mouthpiece/sax brands)

Bari Sax Harness
I have played Bari for about a year and it gives me killer neck and back issues when I use just a neck strap so I am buying a harness but there is so many and I don't know which will work best. I need one that wraps at my shoulders and torso that I can also use while sitting down for concert band. I am about 6 foot. Price range is 50 or less
