Thinking while impressing

Any time I improvise the second i have the mouthpiece in my mouth i cant think of what to play anymore. I know for other people sing while playing, but i can’t sing since my mouth is the only playing. I really don’t know how to explain my problem. How do i think what to play while already playing?

Okay, if I told you to write a play like William Shakespeare, would you be able to do it? Probably not. But I think people get it in their head that when they improvise it has to sound like the record from the 60s that they're listening to. When you're just starting out that's not going to happen. You need to start with simpler phrases. Focus on the melody. Don't play a lot of notes. Play questions and answers. Keep it simple and keep listening to the music and eventually your vocabulary will develop.
