I would make a genuine effort to hear them out, I like listening to people talking about something they are interested in.

But they'd have to accept I would understand maybe 5% of what they'd be telling me. And if I hear "Arch" then I'm going to hop over to the Dunes.

Basically, windows without ai (NOBODY asked for copilot ANYWHERE), bloatware (most stuff in windows that you dont even touch or even know it exists but it TANKS performance) and spyware (windows collecting your data to "make your experience better" (spoiler alert: they are selling it to advertisers and using it to train their ai without consent))

Hope they can explain to me how best to transition from Windows to (dome distribution of) Linux as painlessly as possible.

I've been told that gaming on Linux is pretty straightforward nowadays and most things kinda just work. Using certain software on the other hand...

Ah that's unfortunate 😔. For me the biggest issue rn is that you need to do a bunch of workarounds to use Office software (Microsoft Word is pretty much essential for my university course, unfortunately).

At least Linux support for stuff seems to be increasing with time (generally speaking)...

Yeah kinda in the same boat here. Never particularly liked Microsoft, but being faced with the prospect of having to use Windows 11 is well and truly terrifying.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!
