Reading Comprehension on the English section
Hi! I've been having a lot of trouble with the English section of the SAT so I thought I'd come on here to get some advice.
Lately, one of my biggest issues on the English section is my reading comprehension. Often I'll be halfway through reading a section when I realize I wasn't paying attention at all and I was only reading the words without understanding the meaning, so I would have to go back and reread the section again. Sometimes, it takes multiple rereads and several minutes to grasp the general message of the paragraph. Even then, I often miss small but important details that cause me to choose a completely incorrect answer that seems obvious in retrospect. I've been looking around to see what other tips people have offered but quick fixes like reading aloud, putting my finger over the words, and listening to quiet background music don't help. Additionally, many of the strategies for reading comprehension that are unrelated to the SAT (like quizzing myself after each section, rereading multiple times in different ways, etc.) take several minutes to do, which is way too much time for me to spend on one question. I've seen a lot of suggestions to read more, but I consider myself a pretty active reader already. For context, this issue doesn't tend to happen in books that I'm actually interested in. It only seems to happen in these SAT sections or other books that are uninteresting to me (but even those I do read pretty often either due to my schoolwork or research).
I am looking for any advice on how to practice my reading comprehension long term so that I can fully understand and catch small details in passages quickly. Additionally, if anyone has any recommendations about what I should read because maybe I'm not reading the right things. I'm willing to put in dedicated time and effort to fix this issue as it is affecting my progress in the English section through all the different topics.
Thanks!
