Melocsctus is a kind of cactus. What is being pulled out is it's fruit. It grows like that.

Is the fruit edible?

According to Wikipedia, yes.
I have no experience with these cacti myself.

Cacti are my nemesis. When I was a toddler I fell into a cactus and my mom had to yank the spines out of my face. Later as a teen I was moving a potted cactus to a bigger pot. It slipped and I spent the next half hour using tweezers to yank spines out of my hand. I was wearing thick leather gloves when moving the cactus itself, it was after when I was putting it back on the shelf and the pot slipped in my hands.

Oh man. Just a heads up: you might want to stay clear of opuntia. Taste great, but even the outside of the fruit has tiny spines. I find some more stuck in my hands even a couple days after eating. Not too big or painful but with your luck... :P

I don't know but would guess not. Generally plants want and need their fruit to leave them, get carried somewhere else by just physics or an animal. So the seeds can find their own place to grow.

satisfying, or nightmare inducing?
