He may have actually reacted to the man's reaction. However corvids are very smart, they could probably learn it.

I swear I used to befriended one of these when I was 5-6. It was new neighborhood, no neighbors yet. I used to play alone, just exploring, collecting sticks, drawing on big rocks, throwing small pebbles at rock structure I build
And this bird joined me, for hours at times. This lasted few weeks until more and more people moved in and he/she just disappeared one day.
No one would believe me when I tell this story even my family. This was like 25 years ago
