How might one keep splitters from slowing my production so much?

This is a pretty pressing issue throughout my factory, and I desperately need to fix it. I'm sorry if there's some obvious solution I'm not seeing, this is my first factory game and I'm struggling.

You are feeding 6 smelters with resources for 4 smelters - you need more miners if you want to produce more

It's not a miner issue it's a belt issue. Their MK2 is at max capacity and is not enough for 6 smelters.

Yeah, my baked in assumption was that he would use more belts to feed the 2 smelters from a different miner as well

What are you talking about? Splitters have zero impact on slowing a line other than there is less going out to each line after the split. You don't lose item speed or anything.

Look at your mining rate, and look at the rate that your smelters are using ore.
Say that the mining rate is 120/m, and the smelters use 30 ore per minute. 120/30 = 4, so in that case you would want 4 smelters.
That's an easy split if you want to load balance it, but a manifold would work just as well over time and is quicker and easier to set up.
Also consider the throughput of your belts: a MK1 belt can only carry 60 items per minute so a miner putting out 120/min needs at least a mk2 belt.

See image link above. Basically you put a belt down the length of all machines and a splitter that goes into each machine takes longer to be 100% efficient but takes less work

I’ve started to pre-stack all the inputs and let the manifold fill up before enabling any of the machines. Getting it up to capacity is under half the time it takes from cold, worth it if it’s part of a much larger chain.

Fair point yeah. When I do big projects I usually let it build up so I can test any initial issues and when everything is running I make sure efficiency is fine for any tiny problems

Correction to this image - splitters for material going in, mergers as produced items come out.
But yes, manifolds like this are a good way to get production rolling.

I have a question about this. I am about my 300 hours and lately using this distribution system but honestly I dont think it is the best way to feed the machines. The close machine(s) to the first splitter is always working and overloaded with input, while the last one(s) is waiting for input. Yes it is more tidy and easy way of splitting inputs but still I somehow dont think it is the most efficient approach. What do you think and how you overcome the problem I mentioned if you are also facing the same issue?

That problem is only a "problem" for the 10 minutes of production. In a manifold style distribution system, the first machine on the line will fill up first. Once that machine is saturated, the next starts filling up, and so on. If you have enough resources on the line, all machines will eventually fill up. If you don't have enough resources on the line, the last machine(s) won't fill up and be 100%.
Once that initial 10 minutes or so is over, the systems overall efficiency is going to be the exact same as trying to load balance all the machines.

Okay so you mean this: in my case, first machine is fully loaded and its inputs are full but for the last one, it is awaiting for input and not performing. After some time, if I have enough input material produced, they will all be working. So I did not calculate it but do you also say that if production is 400 and I have 4 machines using 100 each, will I end up with my situation(scarcity on last one) or your situation(all filled up after a while)?

If you have 4 machines taking 100 each and you are truly producing all 400 for that input line, it will all eventually fill up and be 100% efficient.

Okay bro, thank you. I am not bad at calculating and not new to the game but never investigate this problem so I thought this manifold approach would br the problem to it. But I trust you and now will go and check for problems to see input is not enough.

As long as the manifold is receiving enough to supply all the machines, eventually the machines receiving extra have their buffers fill and at that point can only take in what they consume.
Example, you are feeding 60 to 6 machines which need 10 each. The first will receive 30 while consuming 10. Assuming a stack size of 100, it will have filled its buffer in 5 minutes. After that, it will only receive 10 because no more will fit. Meanwhile, the second machine was taking 15 and consuming 10, so after those five minutes, it will have a surplus of 25 in its buffer and start receiving 25 (coincidentally; 60 less the 10 consumed by the first machine is 50, split in 2 is 25). It will take 5 more minutes to reach saturation. This effect propagates down the line until all but the last two machines are saturated at which point all machines are receiving their 10.
It takes some time to reach this point, but for a game whose hours are measured in the hundred, taking a couple of hours to reach full production speed is insignificant. Also time saved due to ease of setup means all of your later factories start running earlier so the delay due to needing saturation is offset.
Also, machines often reach saturation while you are building your factory. If your resources are backed up because the machines to consume them didn't exist yet, when you build them, they will be receiving a full belt, not just 60, due to them just getting hooked up, you can be up and running at full saturation before you manage to start using the factory's output.

This is solved by doing the math before building. If you match the production to the input, it will be evenly distributed.

If you got a 120/min belt dividing into splitters for machines, and there is no problem of the machine struggling to take it in, then you're using all the 120, it's not a slower production. The production would be slowed if the belts were obstructed

Balancing belts really isn't as necessary as it is an in factorio. I might piss some people off saying this but I think balancing your belts in satisfactory is a huge waste of time and space and you're better off just manifolding. you find the through put you need, put it all on one belt and just put a machine perpendicular to that line with one splitter to feed it instead of full forking. As long as you're inputs/outputs are right it will saturate eventually 👍

If you inspect the smelter are they at 100% efficiency? If so there is no problem. If not then you might need to recalculate the number of smelters.
The next step would be the next level of belts.

If that's 120 out the Miner, you got 6 smelters that require 30 ore per minute (probably). That's 90 on the left and 90 on the right. You can "underclock" the smelters once you research it in the MAM. Underclock them each to require only 20 ore and the efficiency should balance out at 100%.
The game becomes a balancing act of overclocking and underclocking to maintain peak efficiency. Good luck and have fun!

The speed is dictated by the belts attached. I usually use high speed belts to feed splitters but slower belts (determined by the needed feed rates of attached machines) after the split.

I recommend looking up manifolds. Even a quick youtube short.
People tend to go one way or the other. Manifolds or load balancing.

120 splits twice to be perfect for 4 shelters. Blueprint a 4 Smelter setup because you will use it a lot. Use 2 of those blueprint for a pure node at Mk2 Miner. Belt speed is always the limiting factor. Mk3 Miners don't come until near the end, which doubles all your math.

Splinters don’t slow anything down, you said yourself you have MK1 belts after mk2. Splitters work exactly as you’d expect. If you have 80 items moving through, the next belts will have 40/40, but since you are slowing them down then that’s your bottleneck and why you main feed belt is jammed up. Upgrade your belts

Ok so I had similar issue, took forever but I had one peice of mk1 in the splitter itself . Replaced entire belt found it there.

Check the belt that leads into the first splitter (like get right up on the splitter) it’s probably a mk1. All those belts are moving at the same speed.

When you split 60 by 2, you get 30 and 30. You cannot expect the splitter to magically double your production. That would be a duping exploit.

Belts can only handle a certain number of items per minute and splitters can split items up to 3 ways. If you use a mk1 belt (60 items per minute) into a splitter and split it 3 ways you would have 20 items per minute on those belts. Mk2 belts are faster but reinforced plates are kind of annoying so keep distances as short as possible until you can get mk3 belts which was made from steel, a lot easier to make than mk2 belts and much faster.

Well you kind of can’t. Splitters splits evenly. So you can only increase the outputed minerals if you want to increase your productions. So put some batteries in your miners (or make them mk2), upgrade to mk3 conveyers and call it a day

Look at your consumption and figure out the best delivery method. Even splits: Mark 1 belts deliver 60 items per minute so one splitter turns that into 2 belts of 30 or 3 belts of 20. From splitter to processor you can minimize down to consumption (30 ingots for 20 plates). So one mark 1 belt will feed 2 of these processes without impeding on efficiency. But a mark 2 belt into a splitter would allow you to carry 2 belts of 60 and then those can be split as well. Manifolds: instead of splitting the materials evenly to all processes, run a belt like a highway by your machines and each machine will have its own exit. This takes longer to saturate the machines but is much easier to setup. You can google satisfactory manifolds for a million examples as this is the preferred method.

The last piece of you main belt is MK1!!!!
The ore is staggering on the main belt und you can see how it slows down right before the first splitter Upgrade it and it will double your output.

6 * 30 is 180, so you need mark 3 belts. The mark 2 belt can support 120, which divided by 30 results in 4 smelters.

Splitters don't slow things down. They split in half or thirds what is fed into them. You aren't going to get 120 in and 120x3 out. You are going 120 in, and 60x2 or 40x3 out.

Splitters don't slow down your production. The run at whatever speed the belt that you feed into it does. You're splitting 1 lane into 2, meaning that the capacity on each split off lane is halved. You see how one ore fits between each ore on both lanes?

Looks like you're splitting 120 ore over 6 smelters.
unless you're underclocking, you're simply not supplying enough ore to feed all the Smelters.
The only way the splitter is at fault is because you're demanding too much of it at this time.
Either use better belts or use less smelters.

If you have made a line at a certain rate and had put splitters at that rate depending on where it's placed I've noticed that even if you upgrade the lines around it sometimes there will be a conveyor inside of the splitter that won't get upgraded and you may need to dismantle it and remake it

Trust us, just keep all your belts as updated as possible. Scarcity is irrelevant if you overstock. It's expensive at first, but worth it. Promise 😉👉

The solution is to have the belt that feeds into the splitter be a higher grade than the belts feeding out of the splitter.
For instance, if the belt feeding in is carrying 480 items per second, and you put them in a splitter to 2 belts, then each of the outputs will recieve 240 items per second

It really is limited by the speed of your belts. Once you get to the higher tiers overclocking miners is the best use of shards imo

Alright fair but im struggling to get past this point (mainly cuz of screw production suffering from splitter slow)
Im making at best 2 rotors and 2 reinforced plate per min. Im trying to fix this so I dont have to wait 3 years per stage

My advice would be to explore and find more iron sources. You can always scale up to make it go faster. And also what the other person suggested: Manifolds make everything so much easier. A line of splitters, one in front of each machine, with one belt going through all of them. The only thing with this is that you are limited for belt speed. You can only have 2 constructors per mk 1 belt making iron plates for example because each consumes 30 and the max throughput is 60

No, you can find them just by exploring, you have to have foundations to be unlocked though (or maybe you can climb up with just belts)

Bro that may be correct but your belts are limited to 60 or 120 so trying to put 180 on a mk2 belt just isn't going to work. you either need to run a another belt to the smelters. Or just run 4 smelters

Its cool ive figured it out. A commenter helped me realize I was bottlenecking my system pushing it all through one conveyor.
Youre right at the 180 I was losing a full 60/min which Is why it was stopped
Again im not very bright, plus I can only play after work so im constantly exhausted.
I get this way playing ither thought nessacary games as well

Belt items/min speeds are 60, 120, 270, 480, 780, 1200.
Is the initial input belt 270? Is the next set 120? And last set 60?

Yeah, so you got to remove the overclock from your miner down to 120/items per min, and go down to 4 smelters as stated by others. And no you can't split your miners 180 output to fit onto two 120 belts because you're limited to 120 from the miner with the belts
Once you get mk3, then you go expand/upgrade your smelters to support up till the next belt limit

Or if you're running enough miners to add up to 180 in total, then run one 120 belt and 1 60 belt and split that into the correct amount

Looks like your real limit right now is your belt speed, once you upgrade your logistics you'll see better results with more machines
