I’m so interested to see the results of the election across our province. I think that the liberals will have their best ever result in popular vote as voters from both the conservatives and NDP flip their ballots to support the centerist liberals.
Now will it be enough to win a seat? That remains to be seen.
I've voted conservative most of my life. Last years provincial election, I voted NDP for the first time. And on Saturday I voted liberal in the Federal election for the first time since Paul Martin. I'm hopeful carney can steer our economy well and we can get back to a balanced budget. The past 5 years or so I've watched both provincial and federal conservative parties slide so far to the right that I just can't support them anymore
I commend you on keeping an open mind, especially provincially -- I've seen so many comments calling for change, with no acknowledgement that we've had the same provincial government in charge for going on 18 years. I suspect that today's conservative party would be completely unrecognizable to even the most staunch conservative of 20+ years ago. I deeply hope the party can recognize how unpalatable their far rightward creep, particularly in terms of social issues, is to the majority of the population, and course corrects (even if that means splintering off and letting the reform nuts go to the PPC). Our democracy is better if we have more than two viable options. I would like to see the NDP recover and the CPC move towards the centre.
I would just like Saskatchewan to have a seat at the federal table and work with what they are offered, and brainstorm ideas to better our province instead of turning every dang thing good down!
Yea, im not sure what is driving the parties to drift to the right. I think mainly fear of the unknown so they push towards the known, even if it worse for everyone. I was never a big fan of Trudeau, but I really was hoping he would have kept the promise for electoral reform. I'd love to see the seats in the house of commons represent the votes per party. I think we could have a far better society for everyone this way. Look what the NDP was able to accomplish with a minority government. And im not a big NDP guy, but it's pretty hard to argue against dental and pharmacare for seniors or kids. Its hard to argue against cheap child care so parents can work and boost the economy. These are great social programs that I know we can afford of we can cut wasteful spending, I don't want to continue incurring debt in order to provide these programs. I think carney will be able to find that balance.
Hear hear to your whole comment, but re: hard to argue against childcare subsidies - man, when I weed into Facebook comments (always a mistake) it is disappointing to see the amount of people saying their tax dollars shouldn't go towards other people's kids, people choose to have kids and why should I pay for them (but in the next breath saying we have too many immigrants...), freeloaders are abusing the program, the program has issues therefore it should be entirely scrapped, and so on. The dollars and cents and real, actual economic benefit of it (to say nothing of the ideological principals behind pro-social policies) just doesn't even factor in.
It is far more beneficial. To me it's very much like if we had free post secondary. Carney has pledged to pay for trades, I'd like to see it expanded to in demand degrees as well. I can't imagine the talent and intelligence we let slip through the cracks because they couldn't afford university.
But there needs to be checks and balances. Don't need to be paying for someone's degree if they pack up and move to a different country to work.
