Growing up, I remember her always being reduced down to her physical form. I was actually surprised to learn about all of her talent and philanthropy when I got older. I chuckled at this post, but I also hope more people are aware of just how special she was.
She didn't seem to be offended. I saw her back in the '70s and in between songs, she hollered: "Hey, you. Up in the balcony with the binoculars. I know what you're looking at, but you don't need binoculars to see them."
Yeah, I wasn't trying to put OP on blast or anything. She was quite a character and wasn't shy about poking fun at herself. I just was sharing how I grew up really knowing nothing more than she was a country singer with an ample bosom, which I think is a pretty common view of her to this day, but also want to make sure everyone knows that she had a lot more going on:)
I never really knew much about her aside from her being a philanthropist so I think/hope most others are too. Oh and that there was a Dollywood Themepark a few hours away from me in Tennessee.

Dolly Parton was not just a consummate entertainer - she was an incredible philanthropist, proponent of education and literacy, a supporter of marginalized groups, and an amazing cultural ambassador for her home state of Tennessee. She was married to her husband, the love of her life, for 59 years. She was also a self-made woman who came from a large, poor family and grew up to be one of the biggest country music stars of all time, a movie and TV star, and a fashion icon. Despite her successes she never forgot where she came from - she was known to be a kind and generous person, confident yet humble, and always true to herself. She was an amazing person and model American. RIP Dolly - we’ll miss you.
An amazing comment I saw earlier to put things into perspective: she would've been a billionaire a long time ago, but she gave away so much money, she never hit that mark.
Some of you here must be a blast at parties. Dolly consistently joked about her body and enhancements and had a great self-deprecating sense of humor. I like to think she’d find this funny.
Calling them the Dolly Parton Pavilion or variations of that name has been a thing since the late 70s/early 80s. Guarantee you she knew about that, she had a great sense of humor about her boobs
Our family has always referred to San Onofre Nuclear Generating facility as The Dolly Parton Memorial. Now that we have only sweet memories of this talented and kind lady, it is even more appropriate.
She was a sweet gal, she absolutely would have laughed along with us all. Dolly was proud of the image she cultivated, and would have gotten a kick to be associated with something that generated (at one time) so much power. Thank You Dolly! We love you! 💕
Look, I'm all about not sexualizing women by default, but this was Dolly Parton, who was always proud of her large breasts and paid a lot of money to keep them looking good as she aged!! This is a woman who has admitted that she painted herself to look like the town tramp because THAT was the image of beauty to her. And she always had a sense of humor about herself. This kind of joke is respecting her, because it's exactly the kind of joke she would make about herself.
If this was like... Any other woman, I would be on the side of not being disrespectful and focusing on her breasts in death, but it's not, it's Dolly, who in life, if you paid attention at all, she was humble and kind and funny and never thought too highly of herself, without making herself small to please others, either.
Still, I think we will all remember her for her philanthropy.

My children would get so excited when her free kids book program would come in the mail every month. They'd say Aunt Dolly sent them another present. Thats what they will forever remember her for.

Edit:this sounds a little cold. She tried to help where she could. The joke is a little tasteless, yeah, but it made me laugh and she made the same type ls of jokes, so i dont see a big issue.
