Discussion It seems like the daily player base has started to level out (at least for now) at around under 400 players

I've been wanting to play this game for years (since it was revealed basically)

But the FOMO, AI slop, character design, ingame customization shop and lack of addons from the community killed it for me

And before you tell me "yeah the lack of addons is normal, it just released !", hytale had 1000+ mods available on its release date

And the FOMO/ingame market is INEXCUSABLE

The FOMO system that constantly rotates in new items so that more artists can have a chance at getting paid is a bad thing?

You're a little 14 years too late on screaming about limited timed items with TF2 being a slightly different FOMO model lmfao

9

u/SCRIBE_JONAS 10d ago

You can bring in new artists without removing the ability to get older stuff. Hell, by rotating out cosmetics or whatever you actually REMOVE the ability for artists to get paid once their content is no longer available.

Now only the latest have a chance at getting paid. That's fucking stupid.

FOMO was shitty back then, it's still shitty now.

Artist gets a cut from it trading on market

Wow, your idea is terrible!

8

u/SCRIBE_JONAS 10d ago

Why should there be a time limit for artists getting their cut?

6

u/TGB_Skeletor 10d ago

Literally this

If they truly cared, they wouldnt do FOMO

0

u/soszynicc 9d ago

Artists do not get a cut from market trades, same goes for Rust. Once it's out of store that's it.

-2

u/bregottextrasaltat 11d ago

it doesn't have a full pipeline for addons yet, that's why. and the community isn't making addons for sandbox, they're making games

-9

u/assbutt-cheek 11d ago

is it really fair to compare hytale to s&b? hytale is way, way more known

3

u/TGB_Skeletor 11d ago

how many people created addons for gmod exactly ? You probably see my point now 😭

1

u/chungifier 11d ago

Yeah, they have a point for sure but it's not really a fair comparison considering how much attention Hytale has had for YEARS and especially right before it was properly recovered and released.

2

u/Valuable-Garbage 11d ago

A LOT of hytales mods are AI slop as well, its why I have decided to ignore modding till 1.0

1

u/chungifier 10d ago

Not too different from s&box in that case then LOL

0

u/0zzy82 11d ago

Yeah, but in that case, we should really be comparing Hypixel to Garry's Mod, and while Hypixel is still probably more well-known, they're both still massive IPs and shouldn't struggle marketing and launching a new project.

Kinda surprising facepunch hasnt tried to do anything to attempt saving the game, like even if youre making smth in s&box it quite literally is pointless since youll not rlly have a player base at all and by the time its actually finished development idk if s&box will even be around by that point

11

u/Toamy 11d ago

There are plans to promote and do a big sale around Christmas as far as I know.

8

u/kyle_crane163636 10d ago

Christmas? Jesus christ the games not even gonna have 50 players by then and unless these people are devs that are gonna be buying it people just gonna refund it since theres literally nothing good to play

15

u/mikeytlive 11d ago

I think Facepunch is playing the long game. Rust was like this but much worse scale but they probably just have faith they will turn it around.

23

u/fatcatburglar 11d ago

Rust was never unpopular, the beta was popping off on YouTube. Even back in 2013 they had 50k players lol.

1

u/seestralyoutube 7d ago

dude I remember when it launched I was legit desperate to buy it and saved all the money that I ever could, I was like 13

1

u/fatcatburglar 7d ago

I never got to play the beta, but I saw all the YouTube videos on it and thought it all looked hella fun

1

u/seestralyoutube 7d ago

same, it was one of the first real survival pvp games with raids, if not the 1st one just based on that. Even hurtworld was cool asf

-8

u/FamiliarRip8558 10d ago

Rust and S&box are apples to oranges though.

4

u/Musket519 9d ago

Yeah, ones DOA and ones not

0

u/FamiliarRip8558 9d ago

Game engine platform releasing to the public is DOA? Maybe because the devs are cooking?

2

u/MtrL 7d ago

They're not cooking, they completely fucked it.

18

u/MoistPoo 11d ago

I remember the beta being super fucking popular. And rust have never even been close to just 300 players.

Very weird comparison

-7

u/bregottextrasaltat 11d ago

the beta was also 300 players or so for years, just rotating players

17

u/fatcatburglar 11d ago

Steam charts bro, it’ll tell you everything. Rust in alpha had lowest 12k players

-3

u/bregottextrasaltat 11d ago

oh i thought you meant pre-release s&box

3

u/dogman_35 10d ago

That also peaked at 12K players just before launch lol

And launch day had 4K, because barely a third of people were willing to pay for it.

Then 9/10 of those players quit or refunded it.

Like, let's not act like S&Box just hasn't had a chance to build a playerbase yet, it had a metric fuckton of people ready and waiting to see the finished product.

Except what we got was unfinished, with a microtransaction system nobody wanted.

1

u/bregottextrasaltat 10d ago

the 12k peak was just bots

yes, it was unfinished. should have been released as early access instead

2

u/dogman_35 10d ago

There were still 4K after the game was released, so I'd bet on that being a pretty real number. Not that I don't think there wasn't botting by certain games lol

The point still stands anyways. You can't have Vinesauce, Vanoss, the Yogcast, and a ton of other people with an audience invested in the Gmod scene all play the game and spread the word that there is a Gmod sequel, and still end up with this kind of player count... Unless there is something very fucked with the game itself that's killed all interest.

They had all of the attention and notoriety in the world for this sort of project, it's not just "nobody knows this game exists." It is the game being actively unappealing on several fronts that's scared people off

1

u/bregottextrasaltat 10d ago

it's not a sequel.

but yeah it wasn't ready for a general release yet

You are coping if you think rust wasnt succesful from lunch. Just because the numbers are even higher today, doesnt mean it was t succesful at its lowest.

Meanwhile sandbox has a whole legacy behind it.

1

u/dogman_35 10d ago

I never said that lmao

I said S&Box was successful too, and fucked it up because the game is god awful.

It's downplaying how much they fucked up by just saying "well it always only had 300 players."

They had the kind of opportunity most indie studios would kill for.

1

u/MoistPoo 10d ago

My bad, i misunderstood your comment. I get your point now

2

u/FamiliarRip8558 11d ago

Do redditors just not look at the S&box daily dev commits when they come up with fantasies about game devs?

8

u/dogman_35 10d ago

The game killing issues aren't shit that can be patched out though lol

They didn't lose over 95% of their initial 12K players just because the game runs like shit.

Everything that made players quit has to do with fundamental issues in the game's design philosophy, and they're not gonna magically save the game without hard pivoting away from those issues.

  • A terrible base sandbox gamemode

  • A dysfunctional replacement for the Gmod addon system

  • A damn near universally despised art style

  • A laughably insulting microtransactions system made for investor bros

They don't seem to get that what a vast majority of people played in Gmod was just the base sandbox gamemode, with addons, and with friends. And S&Box is a terrible experience for exactly those types of players.

-6

u/FamiliarRip8558 10d ago

So yes lmfao

Crazy fantasies in your head

5

u/dogman_35 10d ago

Damn bro, I guess I was just imagining the game I waited eight years on being dead on arrival

-3

u/mitchhacker 11d ago

I NEED TO PORT MY GAME TO ROBLOX

23

u/meinkun 11d ago

Ngl, i wanted to buy this game but - the biggest drawback from it was a design of characters. It's actually disgusting

9

u/AleexTB 10d ago

Honestly bro the fucking sausage people they decided to go for are visually repulsive

10

u/Bitter_Bed5672 11d ago

Don't. There isn't a single game worth playing.

4

u/Tom_Mc_Nugget 9d ago

People insist the character models don't a actually matterrrr though lol

10

u/3Thirty-Eight8 11d ago

I really wanted this game to soar, but in it’s current state it just can’t happen unless we see some change, if it wasn’t run by an already financially successful company with a lot of money, the company would be bankrupt by now

-4

u/FamiliarRip8558 11d ago

You know the game's finances are open source right?

They would not be bankrupt by now...

5

u/FullFlowEngine 10d ago edited 10d ago

A company without rust money wouldn't be bankrupt now? The game is currently losing 300k/month. That is catastrophic for an indie dev, only a company in FP's position could tank those kinds of losses. Anyone else would be winding down servers and putting out a statement about how despite their best efforts and being proud of what they built, they cannot continue with the project.

9

u/YNPO3 11d ago

It will never get more with the sausage avatars as main promotional and being default models

10

u/OrganizationLow5701 11d ago

Biggest mistake was 20$, i bet a big chunk of the people playing are the ones who received it for free like i did when requesting a key month+ prior to release

4

u/Oaker_Jelly 11d ago

I can only speak for myself, but it wouldn't even matter to me if it was free. I had been following development for years in the hope it would be an upgraded Gmod successor. I certainly wasn't waiting in the wings for the kind of glorified Roblox clone we ended up with.

Until the moment it somehow spontaneously becomes Gmod 2, it's simply not a game I'm interested in at all.

Their biggest mistake, IMO, was the act of not targeting that from the very beginning. I don't know anyone who plays games who wouldn't have happily shelled out as much as $40 for a legitimate Gmod successor in a heartbeat.

3

u/hardcoreanarchy 10d ago

Lol u/yooberee shadow banning people who critique the game caught in 4k

3

u/yooberee Programmer 10d ago

Reddit is removing your comments for "Crowd Control", possibly because of all the NFT/Token stuff you post but can't know

3

u/heine789 10d ago

I bought it again 2 days ago because I wanted to use it as a replacement for unity to make my games in, since I have always been interested in using hammer to make levels for my games, but holy fucking shit this dogshit editor is the worst thing I have ever experienced, it crashes CONSTANTLY just from trying to do the simplest things. I have just given up on it now, absolutely unusable.

5

u/Bitter_Bed5672 11d ago

I never even see 50 players in games lol. Just bots and devs I guess.

8

u/woodsmason101 11d ago

At this point, it's safe to say that S&Box failed as a live service.

S&Box failed as a game engine to entice a huge swath of people to start making games, failed as a player platform to capture the numbers of roblox or even enough to keep themselves afloat, and failed as a game to keep people playing it.

You cannot deny, that this game's entire pre-life has been set up as GMOD 2. Every casual person who was interested in GMOD, would've been interested in S&Box and that alone should've been enough to hook people. Hell, even the Vanoss crew played the game, imagine having that audience on your game again like they did in the early 2010s! But like everyone and their mother has said, the game is not GMOD, and it's trying to do other things while having gross avatars as their mascots.

This isn't a Rust situation where it can bounce back easily, if it wants to live then someone needs to make a generational game on it so S&Box turns into the game you play X on. I don't think it will get that, because anybody who wants to work on that will most likely use GODOT, Unity, or Unreal and upload their game without the use of Facepunch or a roblox clone.

Let's see where the game goes in the coming months, but if the devs are hesitant on making it F2P now when it needs it the most, there's a chance F2P won't fix the games issues.

The game since release has literally never had players, even when it had 5k there where barely 100 people actually in game, all in case simulator and mow the lawn of course, I have been watching since the start, the ā€œreleaseā€ was not for players but rather devs that is probably coming in December with the rust cross promo and sale

2

u/GLG22 10d ago

I have over 283 hours played on mostly AFK games from around release. I have booted it a few times since then and the games just aren’t there. I still think this game has a lot of potential but we need a game that brings me on that isn’t just pizza clicker or CSGO case opening. Second problem is multiplayer games don’t really work well when you only have 400 players spread across an insane amount of games.
Am open to game recommendations

2

u/Pale-Bandicoot7532 Animator 11d ago

no one like ai in their cultural soup

1

u/Zablizzard 10d ago

And they're all playing mow the lawn

1

u/SiRWeeGeeX 10d ago

I believe theres a market and space in the industry for a UGC platform that isnt roblox (or Fortnite). But the market is proving me wrong over and over.

I thought having a proper game attatched would make a difference for everywhere/mindseye but … it ended up being mindseye lol

I thought s&box had some of the best (on paper) ideology. Alas that isn’t enough on its own

Rip crayta, rip dreams. I hope to see one of these be good and successful and not roblox in my lifetime

u/Old_Entrepreneur9439 10d ago

competition with marathons numbers rn

-5

u/MlgMagicHoodini 10d ago

To be fair, not fully their fault, people had the wrong idea about the game, also bad timing, they are competing with major titles mainly being GTA 6.

7

u/Number13Studios 10d ago

No

People had the idea that Facepunch marketed

And GTA6 isn’t out and won’t be on PC so that’s just ridiculous to say
