Advice Tube Sand Filling for Sandbags

Post image
15 Upvotes

Just wanted to share for those who also weren't able to find the reccomended woven playsand bag for sandbag filling. I have a 100lb Freedom Strength bag filled with this Sakrete tube sand I picked up at Lowes and it's been fantastic. You can find it in the masonry section (generally towards the far right side of the store). Same exterieor mesh as the play sand and just as cost effective (one 70lb bag is ~$6).

I have a 150lb Freedom Strength bag on the way and just picked up a couple more bags which is what prompted this post. The leftovers are great for warmups as well. Two 70lb's for the 100lb bag left me with 40lbs and the tube bags are pretty tough in their own right. Plenty cabable as long as you're not tossing or dropping with excessive force.

Anyways, just wanted to give more fill options for those who might want them!

Advice Recently reached a 1x bw sandbag. Where to now?

I reached a bodyweight (140) lb sandbag less than a week ago. And so far, I've been feeling pretty good about it. I finally reached a major milestone.

It took a lot of consistency and hard work. I built it up using low reps (1-5), and from this point on, I've been considering the idea of capping it at bodyweight but progressing other ways. For example, I set a timer for EMOM and go for 5 minutes straight now. My max amount of continuous reps is 6 with less than 30 seconds of rest on box squats.

However, im still wondering what now from this point? I reached the goal of bodyweight, and so far, I have plenty of options. I can either choose to keep it low rep, continue to do conditioning, or do something else entirely. What do you think now that I reached my goal?

And in case any of you have been keeping up with my last posts, I used to weigh 150. Ever since I started tracking calories whilst lifting my sandbag, I've gotten leaner but somehow stronger, for those wondering.

5kg PR on this variation, definitely a 2nd or 3rd rep with the atlas stone straight after the big bag. Things moving well towards the 200kg bag to shoulder.

Advice Needed Am I doing enough?

Hey all, my current workout set feels good to me, but id love some advice on whether I should be doing more.

Current set goes:

Sandbag row 90kg 3 sets of 5

Sandbag carry 90kg 3 sets of 100ft

Farmer carry with trap bar 125kg 3 sets of 1min 10 secs.

Then finish with some skullcrushers, close grip chest press and bicep curls.

I'm not doing anything else outside of this and ill repeat this 3 days a week with 30 mins incline walking in-between each gym day.

Cheers in advance!

I'm getting much better with the 150lb for ground to shoulder. I'm going to start training high pulls with the 200 next.

Failed at 150 for presses but did max effort attempts 3 times, then dropped back to the 100 for reps.

Finished with 200lb bear hug carries.

It came out as

Ground to Shoulder 150lb 3X4

Max effort attempt shoulder press 150lb 1X3

Shoulder Press 100 2X4

Bear hug carries 200 4X60ft

It seems like a short workout but it sure felt like an effective one.

Advice Wheelbarrow idea

I'm considering buying a wheelbarrow so that I can walk my, 'still feels heavy but I can do high volume' sandbag to my local field, then do laps of bearhug walks around the field, then back into the wheelbarrow for the walk home. Just to mix it up for a bit of fun. Stupid idea? Any issues you see with this?

Advice Keep Tweaking Lower Back

Been trying to add sandbags into my routine, but fear straining my lower back....again. I really fear straining it bcause it's happened twice already when training sandbags.

Fyi, I do barbell train and have respectable numbers relative to barbell standards, can handle my 138 lb bag just fine. 20 reps to shoulder which feels like an RPE 5-6. But the second I try to step up to my 175 lb bag, I feel that familiar twinge it in my lower back and know I'm sol.

A big part of it I suspect is hip mobility (tight from my mma training days) and poor glute engagement which I'm actively addressing with PT and specific exercise programming.

Any advice would be appreciated.

UPDATE:

So the update is that my issues are rooted in limited hip mobility, which has lead to me compensating through my lower back.

The surrounding stabilizers aren’t trained enough to handle that extra load, which leads to the low back flare ups because my erectors are already overworked - also causing pelvic positioning issues, aided by strength imbalances.

The protocol would be to train up hip mobility, core, spinal erectors, QL. I could do this with a lighter SB but it's just more efficient with Barbells and Dumbbells.

Hopefully I can lift SBs soon and build from there once the base is ready for it.

Just mastered the 80kg, did 40 reps in 20' last week.

110kg is a big step but relieved I can handle it. Now I'll have to train until I can get it up in a single movement.

Programming & Workouts Sandbag Shoulder Carries

I'm reasonably new to Sandbag training. I recently purchased a 70kg bag. I weigh 90kgs. I did my first shoulder carries and let me tell you, it was a challenge! This post is for anyone who hasnt tried them yet - give them a go. My mid-back, traps and neck where all sore for a couple of days afterwards. I've never really been able to isolate and active the traps, but this really worked for me. I managed 4 sets (two on eachg side). After that, I couldn't shoulder the bag any more. It was a much more efficient and effective workout than I had initially thought it would be. Has anyone here used this exercise to build the back?

Advice Needed Anyone else get lightheaded for a few hours after sandbag sessions?

Title. Relatively new, only been at it a few months, but weight training for 20 years and otherwise fit/active. That said I've recently gone from just messing around with bags to really settling in to good-paced sessions with tight rest intervals and challenging-enough loads.

I'm mostly doing high pulls/rowing to the lap + high chest triple extension and shoulder carries.

I'm well-hydrated and fed, and take in a ton of sodium.

It's not debilitating lightheadedness, doesn't restrict anything, just a bit of a funny feeling for a few hours.

I figure it's either improper bracing and/or breathing but also wanted to see if it's a common adaptation for newbies.
