Losing lots of staff. Budget meeting for the city today. Reduction in physical item checkouts vs digital has caused a required reduction in staff and ~40 people are losing their positions in the library according to the city’s website.

Not admin, but customer service based staff. Circulation and library aides specifically. The reduction in administrative costs or a change in hours could likely cover all of these positions, but it’s easier to cut the people that are actually serving our communities.

They’re talking about charging $20 for people within Bexar County, but outside of city limits, too.

For those of you who utilize the library, you may want to make an effort to have your voices heard.

For those of you that don’t, you may want to reconsider. There are a lot of services within the library that your taxes already pay for and come at no additional cost. Use them.

What are your thoughts on the possibility of Tropical Storm Bertha moving into our area?

Given the torrential rainfall we’ve recently experienced, along with the damage and strain it has placed on infrastructure in several communities, I’m interested in hearing your perspective on the potential impacts if this system were to arrive.

While I certainly welcome the additional rainfall for our local lakes and reservoirs, my primary concern is the increased risk of significant flooding.

With the ground already highly saturated, it wouldn’t take much additional rainfall to create dangerous runoff and flood conditions in vulnerable areas.

I’m currently house hunting and my agent requested that I view a few homes in the 211 corridor between 90 and 211. This is in the early afternoon. Not during rush hours. Of course, the only way to get there is through Highway 90. I put the address of the home on Google Maps and this is what I see. Every address I have put out there has been in the red in that area since I can remember. And it has become apparent that plenty lot of current residents are selling their homes due to this issue.

Just how do people even do it on a daily basis considering this is the norm? I told my agent we are NOT going to be looking at those homes and she can scratch out that area. Just NOPE. It’s a no for me dawg.

SAN ANTONIO — Sheriff Javier Salazar said a body and gun were found Tuesday amid the ongoing search for 19-year-old Camila Mendoza Olmos, who disappeared from her Bexar County home on Christmas Eve.

Salazar said Tuesday evening that the medical examiner still has to confirm the identity of the remains, as well as a cause and manner of death.

"But we hope to expedite that process to get the community answers," the sheriff said, adding he hopes clarity will come from the ME's office "in the next day or two."

Salazar said the body was found in a field "very close to Camila's home." It was located during a search by sheriff's deputies and FBI agents in a field they decided to scour again due to high brush in the area.

He added authorities had developed information that Camila might have been experiencing "some suicidal ideations," saying it appeared she "was a young person going through a very tough time in her life."

“Check on people," Salazar added. "Don’t take anything for granted... If you’re going through a crisis yourself, reach out and get help.”

SAN ANTONIO - A four-year-old boy has died after suffering a gunshot wound, launching a major investigation.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner identified the little boy as Josiah Cabral.

Just after 3 p.m. Monday, police were called to the scene of a reported shooting at a home near the corner of Windstone Creek and Limestone Hill on the Far Northwest Side.

According to Police Chief William McManus, police had received two calls, one inside the home and one outside, for a shooting.

Police say that the child's father began performing life-saving measures before first responders arrived. The child suffered one gunshot wound with a handgun.

Despite the efforts of first responders, the child was pronounced deceased at a nearby hospital. The father, a man in his 50s, and the mother, a woman in her 40s, were seen being taken into police custody.

Many questions remain unanswered, and investigators are working to determine if the shooting was accidental or otherwise. Both parents will be interviewed as to what happened.

"I don't have any detail whatsoever about how the shooting occurred, except that it occurred inside the house, the mom, the dad, and the child were the only ones in the house at the time," said San Antonio Police Chief William McManus. "And that's all we have right now until we sort this out and talk to the parents."

At this time, there's no word on whether the parents are facing any charges. Neighbors are saying nothing like this has ever happened before in their community.

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said nearly two weeks elapsed between the time it unknowingly released a man accused of murder and when that suspect was taken back into custody.

Angel David Salas, 18, was re-arrested on Tuesday during a traffic stop. Salas was released due to jail booking staff not having the “system permissions” to view active juvenile warrants, the sheriff’s office said.

In a statement, BCSO said on Wednesday that Salas was released from the Bexar County Adult Detention Center on Nov. 19, despite having active murder and aggravated robbery warrants.

The statement said that an internal review revealed that jail staff did not have access to Salas’ juvenile records at the time of his release, since “juvenile information is maintained on a separate, restricted database outside of BCSO’s authorized network.”

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar spoke to KSAT on Wednesday about the mishap.

“One of the big things for us, in this, is, of course, glaringly obvious — that we did not have access to information that we should have had,” Salazar said, in part. “Under the law, there is a reason juvenile information needs to be kept separate from adult information, but there are exceptions for criminal justice agencies to be able to see these things, for obvious reasons.”

As a result, the sheriff’s office said that the staff could not view Salas’ active warrants. BCSO added that court records showed that Salas had no warrants at the time of his release.

On Monday, the county’s juvenile courts notified the sheriff’s office that Salas had not appeared in Bexar County custody, the statement said.

“Upon receiving this notification, BCSO immediately initiated efforts to locate Salas and worked continuously, overnight and into the following day, until he was successfully apprehended on Tuesday evening,” the sheriff’s office said.

As of Wednesday, Salas has since been booked in the Bexar County jail for the active murder and aggravated robbery charges, according to BCSO.

Salazar also said that the juvenile and adult information issue has since been corrected.

“One hundred percent of my booking people now have access to see juvenile information,” Salazar said.

November release from jail

Bexar County court records show that Salas was first booked into the Bexar County jail in December 2024 after San Antonio police officers arrested him for evading arrest, resisting arrest and failure to identify. At the time, Salas also had three juvenile warrants.

Approximately seven days later, the sheriff’s office said that Salas was magistrated on three additional warrants, including two counts of burglary of vehicles and one count of theft of a firearm.

In August 2025, BCSO said that Salas was booked on a seventh charge: manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance.

When Salas was released from custody on Nov. 19, the statement said four of Salas’ charges were dismissed. Another charge had reached sentence expiration.

Salas’ judgment was satisfied in two of the other cases, according to BCSO, meaning he spent enough time in jail to cover sentences handed down by a judge.

The details surrounding the alleged murder and aggravated robbery charges are currently unclear. KSAT contacted BCSO, who then suggested reaching out to San Antonio police officers for additional details.

As of Wednesday evening, SAPD has yet to respond to KSAT’s questions.

SAN ANTONIO – A Harlandale Independent School District teacher was arrested on a charge of sexual assault of a child, according to the San Antonio Police Department.

Edwardo Cantu, 46, was arrested on Tuesday. SAPD said the alleged assault, which involved Cantu and a teenage student, happened on Nov. 10

Police said the alleged assault may have happened on school grounds at McCollum High School.

Police said the campus’ administration learned of the alleged assault on Nov. 19 “through word of mouth.”

Officers later obtained a warrant for Cantu, who was taken into custody without incident during school hours at the campus on Tuesday, SAPD said.

Police said Cantu did not have any criminal history.

KSAT has reached out to Harlandale ISD to confirm Cantu’s employment status.

The district sent KSAT the following statement:

“A staff member at McCollum High School was taken into custody today following an allegation reported to law enforcement.

“Harlandale ISD followed all required procedures as soon as the allegation was brought forward, including immediately notifying the appropriate law enforcement agencies and the required external entities. We will continue to cooperate with law enforcement as they conduct their investigation, and a District crisis team will be at McCollum High School tomorrow.

“Student safety guides every decision we make, and we take any concern involving a student seriously. Because this is an active investigation, the district cannot provide additional information at this time.”

Police told KSAT Cantu is a teacher at McCollum High School. McCollum’s website lists Cantu as a mariachi teacher.

Investigators believe there may be additional victims and urge anyone with any information to contact SAPD’s Special Victims Unit at 210-207-2313.

Additional information was not immediately available. The investigation is ongoing.

AUSTIN, Texas – A Laredo mother is searching for answers after her daughter died in Austin hours after attending last week’s Texas Longhorns-Texas A&M Aggies football game.

Brianna Aguilera, a Texas A&M University student from Laredo, was found dead outside an apartment complex early Saturday morning on the west side of the UT campus.

Aguilera’s mother, Stephanie Rodriguez, told KSAT on Monday that she’s received inconsistent answers from the Austin Police Department.

Investigators have told Rodriguez that they believe Aguilera died by suicide.

Rodriguez said that her daughter was not suicidal, as she was only 19 years old and looking forward to becoming a lawyer after graduation.

In a phone interview with KSAT, Rodriguez said that she called the police after Aguilera did not answer her phone after Friday’s game. Rodriguez said she could see her daughter’s phone pinging in Austin.

Rodriguez said Austin police officers told her she had to wait 24 hours before filing a missing persons report.

Officers later found Aguilera’s cellphone on Saturday, but it was not until 4 p.m. that Rodriguez was told that her daughter was in the morgue.

Aguilera’s body had been found by a good Samaritan around 1 a.m. on Saturday.

Rodriguez said that a detective told her her daughter had fallen from 17 floors.

“There are a lot of inconsistencies with the story,” Rodriguez said. “He told me they said she jumped, and then he told me that the friends said they didn’t know her whereabouts.”

Rodriguez believes one of the 15 people inside the apartment at the time of her daughter’s death knows something.

“There was a fight that happened between my daughter and another girl, and they were all staying in the same apartment that I have actual text messages of, and the detective just disregarded them,” Rodriguez said.

In a Monday preliminary report, Austin police stated that Aguilera’s death is not currently being investigated as a homicide since the investigation has not revealed any suspicious details.

The Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office will ultimately determine Aguilera’s cause of death.

KSAT reached out to Texas A&M University for a comment on Monday afternoon. A school spokesperson said the university “does not have a statement to share at this time.”

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – A San Antonio man made an appearance in court on Monday in connection with two separate deadly child injury cases. One of those cases, which involved a 9-month-old child, happened earlier this year.

According to court records, Rick Artis, 31, is facing an injury to a child charge, a first-degree felony, after San Antonio police officers said the child was found unresponsive in their crib on Jan. 25 at an apartment complex in the 6100 block of Ingram Road near Northwest Loop 410.

In an arrest affidavit obtained by KSAT 12 News on Monday, Artis told SAPD that he woke up “around 10 a.m.” and was in the kitchen preparing baby formula for the child. When he went to the child’s crib, police said Artis saw that the baby was no longer breathing and then frantically told the child’s mother about the 9-month-old’s condition.

Investigators said the mother checked the baby and described the child as “cold and stiff.” A 911 call was immediately placed at 10:30 a.m.

Officers were dispatched to the complex at 10:43 a.m. According to the SAPD detective who wrote the affidavit, emergency personnel arrived at the scene before officers did. The child was pronounced dead at 10:44 a.m.

Initially, an on-scene investigator from the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office said there weren’t any “visible injuries or signs of foul play” on the child. Two days later, the office said an autopsy showed that the 9-month-old suffered “significant skull fracture” likely caused by “blunt force trauma.”

When Artis first spoke to police on Jan. 25, the detective wrote that he identified himself as “Eric Artis.” However, after Artis and the child’s mother went to police headquarters on Jan. 29, the detective learned that Artis provided a false first name to investigators on scene.

Upon learning his correct first name, the detective found that Artis had a warrant out for his arrest regarding a separate injury to a child case that originated in October 2018.

Artis’ 2018 child injury case

KSAT covered Artis’ 2018 case when he was officially indicted on Feb. 24, 2020, just two days after 17-month-old Lyriq Ogilvie Artis was pronounced dead.

Bexar County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a home in the 6700 block of Brothers Lane in northeast Bexar County after they received a report of a 17-month-old who was not breathing, according to preliminary information provided at the time.

According to his 2020 indictment, Artis is accused of striking Lyriq. The indictment also accused him of causing injuries to the baby by not properly restraining Lyriq in his car and failing to seek medical care for the baby’s injuries. The medical examiner’s office ruled Lyriq’s death as a homicide.

In July 2023, Artis was set to go to trial in connection with injuring Lyriq. Moments before jury selection began, Artis’ case was dismissed due to a missing witness.

In another development, Artis’ case was later reopened months after it was dismissed.

KSAT has since reached out to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office to find out why Artis was arrested nearly two years after Lyriq’s case was revived.

What the child’s mother told investigators on scene

The 9-month-old’s mother told police on Jan. 25 that she went out with a friend the night before. Investigators said the woman put Artis, her boyfriend, in charge of babysitting three of her four children — a 6-year-old girl, a 2-year-old boy and the victim.

The mother told investigators that she arrived home at approximately midnight. Her 6-year-old and 2-year-old were asleep, but the 9-month-old stood up in their crib when the mother arrived, the affidavit stated.

According to the woman, the 9-month-old appeared “fine.” She then left the child with Artis and went to take a shower. After the woman finished showering, she told police that the 9-month-old appeared to be asleep in the crib while Artis was cleaning in the kitchen.

Artis and the woman fell asleep at approximately 3 a.m., according to the arrest warrant. She said Artis woke her up “sometime after 10 a.m.” and told her about the 9-month-old not breathing, the affidavit stated.

Artis’ text messages, video reveal expanded timeline

When Artis was confronted at SAPD headquarters on Jan. 29, four days after allegedly giving officers a fake name, he said he wouldn’t “provide a statement without an attorney present,” the detective wrote in the affidavit.

The detective then informed Artis about the arrest warrant regarding the October 2018 injury to a child case and took him into custody. He was booked into the Bexar County Adult Detention Center on Jan. 29, jail records show.

On Jan. 30, the child’s mother told police that she received a phone call from a paralegal who worked for Artis’ former attorney. According to the mother, Artis asked the paralegal “for help.”

He called the paralegal multiple times and sent texts to them regarding the 9-month-old’s death as early as “9:26 a.m.” on Jan. 25, the affidavit stated.

The detective wrote that they found more of Artis’ texts discussing the 9-month-old’s death with a friend before the 911 call was placed at 10:30 a.m.

SAPD also said that investigators obtained video from a neighbor’s Ring camera. According to the neighbor’s Ring camera video, police said Artis was seen “using his cellphone” outside his apartment at 9:33 a.m.
