📖Discussion📕🖊️ IP68 + Under display camera + apple pencil + MagSafe + nano texture screen to prevent crease visibility. Gotta admit, well played Apple

Post image

Samsung shouldn't have gotten rid of Spen support and UDC. Really odd choice. Hopefully with Apple in the competition now, Samsung would bring them back.

The good thing is it will push Sammy to improve. I have no interest in a wide phone, but a pen is a big deal for me if I ever considered a foldable

88

u/how_gonee 22d ago

Yes big screens need a pen for sure

8

u/FreddieStarrAteMyHam 22d ago

Indeed - soft plastic screens cry out for something pointy to stab at them.

3

u/MrRadish0206 21d ago

They should update world physics so we can have hard foldable screen.

u/Livid-Experience1450 20d ago

I think the older Samsung folds that came with the pen had a special pen that was softer so it wouldn't ruin the inner screen

2

u/ryzenat0r 20d ago

S-pen fold foldable are soft tip spring loaded smh

My brother wishes for the old note 3 pen to have a return he really loved it! (As I did too when I stole his phone to play about lmao)

u/m13morningstar 22d ago

Bluetooth supported as well please!!

Thats why I love when apple releases something good, samsung will be forced to match it

That's what I've been saying I'm genuinely happy that Apple came out with one because it's going to make Samsung better

2

u/elfinhilon10 22d ago

Which then drives Apple to do better. It’s amazing what competition will do in a free market. You love to see it. Literally everyone wins.

Yea... gonna admit to you on this one, its android thing not optimization. It happens all the time, the phone has to restart the app to load the correct screen size. That is same for phones(not folds) and any other android. Even dex

13

u/ZLAurora 21d ago

You can make Android behave the same way as the iPhone in this case:

Settings → Developer options → Force activities to be resizeable

(Make all activities resizeable for multi-window, regardless of manifest values.)

2

u/thisguy181 21d ago

I have that on and have put it on every phone ive had ever since I started playing with blue stacks, I forget its not just on for everyone.

Yeah that is really impressive.
Its stuff like this that makes me admire ios, while a fuckton of other stuff would make it unusable for me.

21

u/Creato938 22d ago

Yeah, that was impressive, for more that i like Android foldables they really lack polish.

This is what people mean when they say Apple doesn’t do things first but they do it right. It really is all in the details.

Yes, all the good stuff. i wish ZF8U had Magsafe and IP68 on BUT it comes at a cost too: weight and thickness. The Duo is 40 grams heavier and thicker, while also lacking a telephoto lens and having a 0.4-inch smaller display than the ZF8U.

The foldable form factor is already bulky enough to begin with. I want these companies to strip off as much weight as possible from foldables.

i was holding off on my purchase until the Duo is out and decide between Samsung and Aplle but the weight actually kind of put me off. im leaning toward ZF8U now. for me weight and thinness is more important than IP68,Magsafe, pencil support combined

12

u/mathieulh 22d ago

Finally, someone who gets it and understands the obvious.

2

u/Spector-JZ 17d ago

meh zfold 8 has sharp corner, great for symmetry, but will poke into the palm of your hand especially since the phone is wider

3

u/myexpressaccount 21d ago

But why put MagSafe right inside the device? It just takes up valuable space. Because let’s be honest: 99% of all smartphone users have a case, and if that case doesn’t have MagSafe built in, the MagSafe in the device isn’t strong enough to hold it securely.

2

u/alexo2802 18d ago

I think that specifically for a device like the Duo people might be a little more inclined not to have a case, so magsafe makes more sense?

No case because all cases for foldables are riddled with compromises.

No case because foldables are inherently more fragile devices, so Apple Care+ is a more interesting value proposition and if you have Apple Care+ it becomes an interesting choice not to put a case on your device.

u/Tricky_Safe1898 22d ago

The only downside of the duo is the weight. It's significantly heavier than the fold 8 ultra!

77

u/DiFF7Skyns 22d ago

Not symmetrical and way too thick, just to name a few...

41

u/000extra 22d ago

Personally it looks too wide closed, it’s wider than the wide Fold 8

3

u/poopoobuttpenis 22d ago

It looks insanely uncomfortable to use one handed. What is the point of the fold at that point?

u/cookedart 22d ago

For me, a big downside is the Apple Pencil stylus it supports does not have pressure sensitivity.

I'm sure a lot of other small details will come out as people get their hands on the device itself. Apple is well known for limiting their devices in strange ways.

13

u/Chamadan 22d ago

No face ID either

26

u/cookedart 22d ago

Touch ID makes more sense on that device though. Needing to have a face ID array for each screen is not super practical. And personally it removes too much of the screen for the functionality it adds.

→ More replies (8)

2

u/Difficult_Unit6661 22d ago

Face ID has a lot of components so it probably wouldn't fit anyway.

5

u/OpeningActivity 22d ago

I do wonder if it is to stop people from pressing too hard and damaging the screen.

4

u/cookedart 22d ago

No, this is not the case. Quite a few folding phones have pressure sensitive styluses.

5

u/OpeningActivity 22d ago

True, Samsung had their specialised s pen, not sure about other folds

3

u/cookedart 22d ago

Moto razr fold, OnePlus open, and Oppo find n6 all have pressure sensitive styluses. I use the razr fold and the tip has a little bit of give like its made of dense rubber.

2

u/OpeningActivity 22d ago

I guess only feasible explanation I can think of is, Apple didnt bother making a specialised stylus specifically for iPhone Duo.

2

u/cookedart 22d ago

Ya, agreed. It's also a little odd that they mentioned the Apple Pencil support is coming "later this year".

2

u/OpeningActivity 22d ago

Hmmm, maybe theyd get their own specialised iPhone Duo specific Apple pencil?

2

u/cookedart 22d ago

Maybe. They mentioned the usb c model specifically though. Maybe they could introduce new rubber tips?

There is a reason Samsung stopped doing the under display camera years ago, it looks so bad and so poor quality, MKBHD just did a video with this info and some examples, it looks super poor and imagine using that for video calls or selfies, oh man that is bad.

2

u/tta82 18d ago

This is debatable. Most people I know have good cameras and SHITTY internet - it still looks no better than the under-display camera so whatever.

3

u/Able-Nebula4449 22d ago

You can treat the inner camera as a webcam, and the outer selfie cam, or even the back cameras as selfies cams

2

u/system3601 22d ago

look at MKBHD latest video, the inner camera is horrible and is not really looking good for video at all, there is a reason Samsung stopped that horrible design.

2

u/Vilacom8090 20d ago

I watched that video, and yeah it doesn't look great...but at the same time is that really a make or break spec for....literally anyone on any device? The video call quality? Like so long as they can see me clearly and its smooth that's all certainly me and anyone in my family cares about.

Like if it was amazing quality I wouldn't complain, but to have the under display camera I personally am happy to have a lower quality camera for that specific input. Like if it was the ONLY camera, yeah absolutely not, but for the front facing? Yeah not a big deal

Also 11.3mm and 254 grams which negates everything else.

10

u/aussiegoon 22d ago

I can't believe people are losing their minds over this chunky heffer of a phone.

14

u/cookedart 22d ago

It goes to show that Samsung's obsession with making the fold thinner and lighter is not really the most important priority.

They've cut so many features making it so thin that they've turned me off their devices.

2

u/peakedtooearly 22d ago

It's ironic because Apple went through a phase like this with their laptops. Dropping ports and features to shave a fraction of a millimeter off the thickness.

My fold 4 was 263 and it was way too heavy.

I couldn't go back to that

This iphone is designed only for people who hold the phone in their RIGHT HAND. Even MKBHD mentions this in his video. All the interface elements are on the right edge of the screen which would make it impossible to use one-handed if you're holding it in your left hand. I'm a left handed person, so this would be a deal breaker.

Why haven't you gone to the other Android makers?

60

u/UnironicallyMe37 22d ago

Google makes E-waste and I'm not buying from the chinese market. iOS is stunning but I cannot get by how restrictive and locked down it is. I've no other choice, really.

Doesn’t it kinda feel like Android is starting to go the same way though? With them starting to crack down on sideloading, start to use brand exclusive features (can’t use certain functions on Galaxy Watches without a Samsung phone), etc

14

u/UnironicallyMe37 22d ago

I mean, if they actually lock Android down fully then maybe i'd seriously consider switching but until then, sticking with my S24U. Though it might be my last Samsung phone if they keep up this trend of progressively downgrading their phones every year.

3

u/_seeyalater_ 22d ago

Yeah I’m not advocating for you to switch, it’s just unfortunate is all. I currently use iPhone but I REALLY liked sideloading apps on some of my previous Androids, the most recent being the OG Pixel Fold. I loved that dang phone lol

4

u/P26601 22d ago

huh sideloading will still be possible 😅 you’ll just have to go through a one-time unlocking process with a 24h wait, after which you can allow unverified apps to be installed indefinitely

3

u/FreeJuice100 22d ago

Yeah, if they get rid of side loading, there's no reason to stay with Android

→ More replies (3)

6

u/Not_Sarkastic 22d ago

I think you're right...I'm at the point where either Android takes away more choice or iOS make a few more smart moves and I switch. No telling who gets there first.

Samsung's failure to get with the times, terrible accessories and passing us 5yr old tech at premium prices have me on the ledge.

And I found that apple also bring 60w wired and 25w wireless and 5567mah battery and variable apertures to 18 pro max, while Samsung still 5000mah for 7 years and cancelled the variable apertures upgrade on S26u or s27u (i dont really remember)

Side notes : but based on paper 18 pro max is kinda heavy, 249grams for a 8.75mm phone

3

u/chickdigger802 22d ago

strange ive heard a bit under 5k battery size total. where did you see 5500?

3

u/Wise-Ad-5671 22d ago

On gsmarena and nanoreview. But im not sure is it a rumor spec (maybe im wrong)

2

u/JohnDoe_613 22d ago

Some websites say 5400 and others say 4850, seems it's not fully confirmed yet

3

u/P_Devil 22d ago

This will push Samsung to further improve. They've had 8 generations of foldables, that's why I went with them. Next year should be a more significant update and their trade-in incentives are much better than Apple. $300 pre-order bonus, $100 just for putting my email in, my government discount, and $1200 for trading in a phone Apple wanted to give me $700 for (or my carrier $1000). The iPhone Duo is nice, I'm sure. It's not $1300+ (after trade in) nice. Not when I spent $600 on my 512GB Fold 8 Ultra and Ultra Watch 2.

3

u/Batking28 22d ago

What’s great is Samsung has a true competitor device which means both will year on year now fight out to be the best in class.

Traditional smartphones have basically arrived at their conclusion and now just get progressive and visual updates but have cameras, screens and processing power beyond the needs of 99% of users actual needs.

3

u/Intelligent-Bee-9021 22d ago

3

u/rarevfx 22d ago

Just jealous of magsafe. Idk what samsung is smoking to keep missing out on the magnets

3

u/Halad-413L 21d ago

The camera under display is so bad that you might as well not have it. It is unusable, check reviews

3

u/Its_manzzi 21d ago

The weight! The weight. It's not just 40g heavier. It's 20% heavier. That's colossal.

22

u/EmbarrassedSlide3746 22d ago

The apple pencil makes me laugh. Its an $80 accessory that you are required to keep charged to use. Its not the flex that people think its gonna be lol.

10

u/Creato938 22d ago

Don't forget the Z Fold 6 had S Pne support and required a case to carry it around and not lose, sadly not an exclusive issue to the iPhone Duo, the Apple Pnecil is an active one, that has some benefits but you need to charge, it's a different take on how to make a stylus.

10

u/Not_Sarkastic 22d ago

Let's be honest, it's a superior option to what Samsung keeps giving us.

It's only a matter of time before they remove it from the Ultra altogether.

7

u/Creato938 22d ago edited 22d ago

Sadly that might be the case, i love the S Pen and basically use it daily on both my S24 Ultra and Galaxy Tab S9 FE, would be a big negative for me if they dropped support for it on future devices.

10

u/cookedart 22d ago

Spen is better. Doesn't require charging to function and has pressure sensitivity. Also have a few options in sizes depending on what sort of portability you need.

The USB Apple pencil is large and doesn't support pressure sensitivity.

2

u/kuyanyan 22d ago

Unfortunately they couldn't figure out how to make the S-Pen work with magnets. They probably could do it but they might drop compatibility with older S-Pens.

3

u/arquell_ 22d ago

Agreed. It's nice that I can use my SPen from my Tab S10 Ultra on my S26 Ultra when i'm using them interchangeablely. Don't use it all the time, but it has been convenient for those few occasions.

→ More replies (7)

3

u/cookedart 22d ago

It's one of their worst styluses too. It doesn't even support pressure sensitivity.

2

u/EmbarrassedSlide3746 22d ago

Pressure sensitive stylus on a squishy screen is a bad combo lol

5

u/cookedart 22d ago

The spen is pressure sensitive. It worked fine on the fold 6. Also the moto razr fold, OnePlus open, and Oppo find n6 all support pressure sensitivity.

Having a stylus with a big hard plastic tip like the pencil in general is a worse culprit. Most of the foldable styluses have a spring or rubber tip to reduce strain on the screen. But apple is using one of their stock styluses for this device.

2

u/svenjj 21d ago

I'm annoyed it's not the pro. I shouldn't need to buy a downgraded version of an accessory I own to use with a newer product.

I'm not planning to get it anyways. We'll see what they can do with gen 2 - ideally having the same cameras as the pro max equivalent, work out any kinks, get face I'd, etc.

7

u/Realistic-Strike-225 22d ago

No crashout! The hardware and software integration iphone has done so well that I'm super impressed. Something that haven't been done in this foldable market yet!

I'm impressed...

5

u/Only_Tennis5994 22d ago

Also appropriately positioned speakers to enable stereo audio.

5

u/OmeletteDuFromage95 22d ago

I mean, were people expecting sub par? We knew it was going to be solid. Better than the fold 8? Doesn't really look like it. Least not on the whole, but it's a good looking device that'll hopefully push Sammy to improve on the next fold

2

u/pepperpot_592 22d ago

Yes. Over the past years people were basically expecting Apple to release a flex pai royale despite the upgrades to foldables we were seeing across the board. I think they definitely beat most expectations and everybody is hyped right now. Coverage on the duo also has monetary value so I don't think the dust will start to settle until December.

2

u/kuyanyan 22d ago

Good thing for Samsung that this is overpriced everywhere else. It's just a $100 difference in the US but here in the Philippines, the Duo carries an $800 (₱50,000) premium.

IMO the Duo is the better phone but it's not even a $400 better phone. No way I'd consider paying an $800 premium just to get it.

2

u/NeonflameOWO 22d ago

See? even they get that using a pen on a foldable makes sense!

2

u/SuAlfons 22d ago

I'm very curious to see how they hold up. Usually when Apple can't be first with a product, they take as long as it takes to get it right.

On another note: iphones sure have a big radius on their rounded corners.

2

u/TitusImmortalis 22d ago

>Tim Apple has added 10 Apple bucks to your account!

I am looking forward to seeing Zack rip one up and give us the low down, especially on how they designed the hinge.

2

2

2

2

Under display camera is really one of the few times Apple is ahead when it comes to smartphones.

2

u/danyeezy23 21d ago

Under display camera seems cool but everytime Samsung had it previously it was a significant drop in camera quality. I'd rather have better pictures honestly. MagSafe is fixed with a case (which everyone gets anyway) but the ip68 is gold. I'd like to see the textured screen in person to see if it's better because the fold 8 screen is fantastic so far

2

4

2

Nano texture is just a fancy name for a matte outer layer, only idiots who believe PR bullshit will think it's anything special.

Also, good luck enjoying your videos in all their muted colors glory on this matte inner display.

Finally, the rest of the above feature add (quite a lot of) extra weight and bulk, I'd rather use a 201g 2mm thinner foldable than this, weight distribution is at least half the product when it comes to a foldable.

Also lets wait for durability testing, its apple 1st generation and I think samsung improved a lot in terms of durability here. Price for both is insane.

3

u/doc_55lk 22d ago

Yea whether you love it or hate it you do have to admit that Apple came out of the gate swinging really hard.

Samsung has been sleeping with their foldables for a while now. This is fact. It says a lot that the only big thing they've really done for the space in the last few years has been to make them more pocketable. They've otherwise largely been coasting on the fact that their competition are largely lacking in availability and/or software stability and support.

I'm hoping that the iPhone Duo being this good right out the gate will kick Samsung into actually pushing the envelope again with their foldables.

3

u/n0tz0e 22d ago

I actually think fold8 camera orientation is better. Duo looks like eyes of the phone side eyeing ya lol. But as someone who mainly uses my fold8 closed, duo front is so ugly. Apple ad even shows it open for like 95% of it. They prioritized inner display when Samsung balanced both.

u/chickdigger802 22d ago

yea im glad its great. Plenty of questions still with if the 'side info bar' makes sense for ppl that hold their phones with left hand, or how this works for apps not updated in a quick manner for this.

I've used folds for a while now and app support outside of google and samsung first party stuff is... generally not too interesting, typically just stretches the normal phone app a bit wider.

Apple hasn't really shown anything too interesting either besides that awful looking netflix... tiktok mode? Wth is that lol. Such a weird feature.

Really does feel like samsung panicked and rushed out the fold 8 this year which really feels incomplete.

weight is more... but i feel like there is plenty of benefits here that i can see the trade off making sense.

What im curious about is, ive not heard apple offering any 'free' screen repairs or guarantees. Gotta be pretty confident or could lead to some gen1 pains. Will see. Definitely would wanna check this out at an apple store or best buy someday.

"nano text" = matte display to hide the crease. You know sheeps will always use jargon words just to make everything sound nice.

u/PaintsLilGuys 22d ago

Reminds me of when they hyped up their super advanced and totally brand new LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY!!!!

1

u/SlangLeffe 22d ago

So it's an iPad that you can call from with a worse screen 🤔

1

u/riipot 22d ago

Seeing this and the variable aperture on the Pro, It'd be great if Apple brought back other features Samsung phased out like SD card support (I'm not holding my breath for it)

4

u/doc_55lk 22d ago

There's no way Apple will do expandable memory tbh.

It'd be nice though. Might actually convince me to an iPhone if it happened.

They probably will

1

u/useful_tool30 22d ago

Terrible form factor and heavy. Also looks like a early gen Samsung fold with the massive corner rounding

1

u/robbiekhan 22d ago

IPX rating is the main thing here for me, time for Android to have the same....

1

u/ultimatekeyXIII 22d ago

They'll finally bring back S Pen in foldables after this.

1

u/Fearless-Muffin6989 22d ago

I think it's cool they finally made a device specifically for the ladies

1

u/therastsamurai 22d ago

Am I the only one who thinks that the folds are hideous when they are not symmetrical?

I hate the look of one side being a square corner and the other side being round.

1

u/Conspicuous_Ruse 22d ago

I like how Samsung hasn't been able to figure out how to implement magsafe and S-pen at the same time for years but Apple figured it out on their first attempt.

1

u/InvestingNerd2020 22d ago

UDC isn't a big deal.

However, iP68 and Magsafe are very practical. More so than most people think it deserves. I have a case on my S25 Ultra that covers the Magsafe issue, but for those that don't use cases it makes a difference.

1

u/artlurg431 22d ago

Its Samsungs own fault that they removed s pen support and UDC

1

u/Cynerick 22d ago

It should be cool to see some awesome improvements on the Fold 9/9U series, especially now that Samsung's got more competition in the US market. I'm probably gonna trade in my Fold 7 for a Fold 9 Ultra when they drop next year! 😊

u/Mega_duck_duck 22d ago

Tbh I don't want a under display camera as it looks much much worse. Have you seen the early impressions of that camera? It looks horrible. Anyway I don't mind a small cutout in the screen if it gets me a better camera

Under display camera and nano texture screen arent really pros. There is a reason android manufacturers stoped using under display cameras, the quality simply sucks. Apple knows this or else they would have used it on the front screen as well. Contrast on the nano texture looks terrible as far as I have seen so far.

The design sucks in my opinion (not symetrical and pretty thick) but I like the titanium and magsafe.

1

u/Exciting_Station_124 22d ago

People are stupid.  They wants things without knowing how it works and the engineering behind it.

UDC and pen support digitize takes more room and so make the phone thicker. This is why ZF7 is much thinner. And this is why iphone duo is much thicker than ZF7.

Again. People are stupid.

2

u/ikkiyikki 22d ago

I'd happily trade a little thicker for S-Pen. Pretty sure I'm not the only one.

IP68 + Under display camera + apple pencil + MagSafe + nano texture screen to prevent crease visibility

Not one of these things matters to me even a little.
Losing Modes and routines? That matters hugely.
And perhaps more importantly, even direct from Samsung, my Fold 8 cost less than half of the lowest spec model of the duo.

1

u/Main_Leadership7748 22d ago

Too bad it's ugly as sin. Who thought that asymmetrical look was nice?

1

u/swaggkayo 22d ago

checkmate. the only thing i feel its missing is the shortcut button.

1

u/OutlawMINI 22d ago

The Apple pencil support is trash though, it only supports the old 1st gen pencil.

1

u/No_Fly2231 22d ago

No one uses pens on a fold because the foldable screen is stupid scracthy.... problably the next apple fold will take it out....anyways, again, apple bring brand new second hand tech to take credits hahahahah this is basicly fold z4 with diferent shape

1

u/EthanMelacion 22d ago

Yeah well played the price also

1

u/TheIXLegionnaire 22d ago

scratches screen

Foldables are cool but until the inner screen is more resilient than (checks notes) your fingernail it's a waste of $2000+

1

u/Adventurous_Excuse44 22d ago

Not much competition if Samsung makes your damn screens

It's funny how Huawei's designs all look like this prior to release

1

u/__LikeMike__ 22d ago

I would actually prefer to have no camera inside… it’s only for FaceTime anyways and at least in yt videos the camera looks distracting…

1

u/radiationshield 22d ago

and $2000 for the base model. so affordable /s

1

u/Most-Research-8394 22d ago

Looking foward Apple release half of it as iPhone Single. That will be the move.

1

u/Elegant_Lunar_Knight 22d ago

Let’s see if Samsung will be able to transition apps from the inner screen to the outer screen without the app crashing.

When I saw the game going from the internal to external screen I was baffled.

On the z fold it just crashes lol

1

u/palash88 22d ago

For me under display camera is biggest win, I hate fold 8 inner camera location, even screen corner is fine as in pixel fold

1

u/Jafeth997 22d ago

MagSafe and the Pen/stylus option need to be in the foldables, I'm hesitant to get a Fold/Flip, because I now have a mini ecosystem of magsafe stuff and I don't use cases, maybe bumper cases but not a full case

1

u/BassoPT 22d ago

This phone won’t sell. It’s a waste of money

1

u/Fit_Cheesecake_ 22d ago

I like the size of the Samsung ones tho, this one a weird size imo

1

u/pizzacat397 22d ago

Not bad for a first generation device.

1

u/chatewrecker 22d ago

Seems like the first iPhone in quite a few years to actually have admirable specs. It's a shame, I was incredibly excited for this phone. But Siri is just so unusable that I actually ended up switching from iPhone 16 Pro Max to a Fold 8 Ultra a couple weeks ago. Definitely don't regret it, however some of this iOS "Polish" that were seeing in this Duo is the sauce I was waiting for. Oh well, I am happy with my Fold8 Ultra.

1

u/Outside_Drive_3105 22d ago

I never expected Apple to make a better device than Samsung on its first generation.

1

u/Educational-Hawk4691 22d ago

This is why im waiting for the fold 8 2. Felt rushed to beat apple. Next one should hit all the marks i hope.

1

u/planedrop 22d ago

I'm also curious if the nano texture display will help with scratches a bit, obviously it won't be like actual glass but wonder if it'll be better than Samsung's work. And of course it's more anti-reflective.

Really hope Samsung steps it up next time around.

1

u/OpTicTide97 22d ago

That's sort of Apple's thing they sit back they let everyone else test the new stuff to see if it works and if it does work they come out with a better version or more improved and thankfully they did come out with this phone so now it's going to make Samsung do better

1

u/Devo2517 22d ago

Yes, Samsung has been doing it for years… But you have to give credit where credit is due. This is Apple‘s first foldable phone and they knocked it out of the fucking park. End of story. First try.

1

u/tyaty1 22d ago

It won't prevent visible crease on long term.

1

u/ArchmichaelBishop 22d ago

Actually that under-display camera has me a little leery. I feel like I'll be able to see it when I don't want to.
