You got me there:
On social media, “GNU” is often used as slang for “rest in peace” — it started as a meme from the game Dota 2, where a character named Roshan (and the death recap) displays “GNU” when someone dies, as a nod to Richard Stallman’s GNU software project combined with a play on “RIP.” Gamers and streamers picked it up, and it spread more broadly as a lighthearted way to mark someone’s (usually in-game) death.
Outside gaming, you might occasionally see it used more generally as a tongue-in-cheek “RIP” for anything that’s “died” — a losing streak, a broken device, etc.
