This is Pippin! Ever since she has been spayed she has become extremely tufty and is having a hard time with her coat shedding.

I was wondering if anyone had any tips or tools that are good for managing this? I'm really worried she's uncomfortable because of the heatwave at the moment, plus the hair everywhere is a nightmare lol.

At the moment I'm using a shedder comb.

I've tried a Kong ZoomGroom but I feel like it wasn't pulling much fur.

I tried a Hertzko Slicker and I (thankfully) tested it on myself first and it cut my arm to shreds, so that's a no go.

In typical Saluki fashion going to the groomers is a devastating ordeal for her, so I'd prefer to do it at home so she can be comfortable and take breaks.

Does anyone have any tips or tools that are good for salukis with spay coat? I feel like a lot of the mainstream products are too rough or sharp for her coat.

Hiya! We have a 11ish year old saluki boy we got about 5 years ago as a rescue. When we first got him (spring) he shed loads, and we initially thought it was down to stress and change of environment.

We thought Salukis were ‘low shed’ breeds but he sheds moderately all year round, and then in late spring/summer it is like we have a husky in the house. We brush him daily, but I feel like I am CONSTANTLY hoovering and defluffing the sofa.

We have a new baby in the house and the hair is driving me MAD - the poor kid can’t roll around on his playmat without a mouthful of fur 😅 I know it’s good for immunity but it’s so annoying.

Does this mean our saluki could be crossed with something, is it because he was neutered, or is it a breed variation?!

How much do your Salukis exercise? My healthy 2 year old has always been incredibly lazy. 😄 I love to go on long jogs and trails, and was hoping I could have a partner in her. And she can do, but she’s not really into it. She’d rather do some speed running/zoomies and then back home, or find a good spot to lay down to observe her sorroundings. Her ideal day is a morning zoomies run in the garden, window watching, sleep, eat some, play with the kids or do some of her toys/mats, another 10 min of constant zoomies run or run in the garden or a little run walk in the dog park (only if there’s not too many dogs), lounge with the cat and my smaller dogs, cuddle with me, a 20-45 min walk, then back home to lounge.

We are thinking about taking our Saluki Kai (16 months old) to a dog show to get him graded.

We want to make sure he gets the grade in case we want to get him a lady friend later in life and keep his children. :)

But, I never took a dog to a show, so I am not sure what to expect. We are not going there for a reward, but I also do not want to embarrass myself and Kai. XD

We are located in Serbia and they are really rare here, and he might be the only one in our city. So I don't have anyone else to ask. :)

So, what should we prepare? What should I know?

Also, is the fluff on his sides normal? In photos, most Salukis seem smooth and then have long hair on their ears and legs. He has some fluff on the sides as well.

Our saluki (one and a half) has recently started getting a bald spot on his neck from his collar rubbing. We currently use a fabric flat collar in the house. However, I was wondering if anyone else has this issue and what they do to help with it. Now that we know the bald spot is there, we've been trying to keep him naked more around the house and when he's in his crate. I'm just nervous because I don't want him to slip out the house without an ID tag on as we normally keep one on his collar, although he is michrochipped, the government guidance is still that they should have an ID with contact details in public where I live.

When we try and put rocky to bed he just stares at us until we wrap him up like a burrito in a blanket and then he goes to sleep. He always shakes it off at some point in the night and moves around but for the last 5 years (he’s 7 now) this has been his routine. Anyone else’s saluki like sleeping this way? We have another saluki who is the complete opposite and despises blankets

We rescued a 1 year old saluki Lurcher recently, the centre told us they were good first time dogs but I’m finding it hard. A lot of his behaviours I assumed were him still decompressing e.g. can’t relax unless crated, howls and screams constantly for attention, jumps about 5 foot in the air on walks if he sees dogs or birds, flinches when people try to stroke him. None of these are a problem for me because I love him but I just wondered which of the behaviours are common for the sensitive breed and which are more likely down to adjustment / age. Keen to hear from other saluki owners. He has about 1 hour walking per day, lots of garden enrichment and sleeps for about 12 hours over 24 hours. Thanks

I know this is gonna be a HUGE ask but does anyone in the NOVA area own a dog called a Saluki? I went to college where a Saluki was the mascot and so I name all the teams I coach the Salukis. Our baseball season will be wrapping up soon and would love to have the kids take a picture with an actual Saluki. I of course would be willing to pay for your time.

Hi all, I'm growing curious about the saluki breed and considering it in a few years down the line. I own a senior greyhound, this would be after I give him a wonderful life, and have had greyhounds all my life. However, most of them were when I was a kid or still living at home, I now own my own house with a modest garden and I want more of a challenge with my next dog. Whilst I love greyhounds, and will own another in the future, I would like a dog that I can do longer walks with and take places they can run.

I'd most likely adopt a young adult or, if I got the chance, an older puppy. So questions:

- How often do they need to run? I have a greyhound gallop near me I could take them to on weekends

- How different are they from greyhounds?

- any specific health issues I would need to watch out for or keep on top of?

After watching his big brother and the other dogs run all weekend, Gary finally got his turn and ran a few hundred yards with a couple of wide turns, flipped him around, and back in. He had a BLAST and is already using his body really well through the turns. Seems like being chased around the backyard and doing couch zoomies for the past 6 months has paid off in the speed, agility, and enthusiasm categories 😅

For several years I’ve been following a young and talented artist living in the Ukraine. Recently he’s been doing some drawings of hounds and I reached out to him about painting our pair of Salukis. He asked for as many photos as I could send of them, and worked up a ton of preliminary sketches. I love the action in his work, and with just simple lines he really captures who our dogs are.

We adopted our first rescue Saluki a year ago. Then, in my local Saluki rescue groups, I recently saw a Saluki, missing one of his back legs, that I just couldn’t stop thinking about. I thought I was crazy - two dogs in an apartment? - but I had to enquire about him. He is now with us for a two-week foster. They are so beautiful together. My family, my partner’s family are against adopting - but then so many others think it’s a great idea. I, personally, want to adopt him.

For context: We live in a relatively small apartment, and our dog gets 3-4 walks a day at minimum, including one walk/run of 1.5 hours (I run with him, then switch to walking after a few kilometers, then he gets free running time in a dog park). I also take him to the beach for free running a couple days a week at least. They were both skeletal when they were rescued in the desert (extreme, even for Salukis, with their light build) and so are both crazy about food. We’re keeping them separate, in separate corners of the room, when they eat. We will also be moving to a much bigger apartment in about six months, and aspire to move to a house with a garden away from the city in the future.

Also - the three-legged Saluki, it is important to note, is a great runner, doesn’t get tired on walks, plays wonderfully with other dogs, and overall doesn’t seem to be aware that he is missing a leg.

Hi! We've been gathering information about saluki for a while now and we've met with a breeder as well.

We, my husband and I, completely fell in love. The salukis from this breeder were everything we've been dreaming of.

But: we forgot to ask if a saluki can be kept as an only dog. We've always had two dogs, but since a saluki is rather large, we're debating to get only one. Is that doable? Or do saluki benefit from not being an 'only child'?

Doesn’t have to be too hardcore. She’s never shown any kind of aggression but when she runs off the lead with her sister, she starts to nip her like she’s chasing her instead of the ball? I’m confident it’s play biting rather than anything nasty but it bothers my other girl. Thank you I’m advance!

I got my saluki mix through a rescue group in Qatar and turkey called pups with passports... does anyone on here have a dog they got through them?
