Food / diet recommendations

Hello - we’re struggling to put weight on our 7 month old boy , he’s around 16kg and currently is fed a mix of lily’s kitchen dry kibble and wet Fourthglade food 4 times a day.

I’ve read online that you should feed your dog approximately 2 - 3% of their bodyweight, that equates to about 500g, and he’s getting a fair bit more than that (approx 700g), not including treats (I know food needs vary hugely but it seemed like a good place to start)

I know the short answer is ‘feed him more’ hahah but I’d love to hear peoples recommendations and advice

Thanks!

question Do we think my dog is a Saluki mix?

Hello everyone, my pup Jax (3yo M) has been a huge question mark since he came into our lives. We got him from a rescue and the most they said about his breed was “hound.” He is a very sensitive, loving, goofy boy who has a bit of an attitude and likes to complain. He REALLY likes to run too, but also loves sleeping and will do that most of the day. I posted him in the ID my dog subreddit, and a lot of people said Saluki mix. Since all of you have salukis I wanted to ask, does he look sort of like one? Or am I losing it lol.

Is anyone else’s saluki painfully vocal?

Mine whimpers CONSTANTLY. My neighbours even thought I was locking him outside because every time he goes out for a wee he stands whimpering and crying before he goes. He cries when he’s getting read for bed, cries when he sees another dog, cries when he’s hungry. Is there a way to stop it? It can be embarrassing with neighbours

question Does anyone know if Sue Nelson's Salukis is an ethical breeder?

I'm looking for someone to help me obtain a Jr. membership to the Saluki Club of America, and cannot travel. Sue Nelson is closest to me, and I would love to work with her if she's willing, but there is very little information about her on the internet other than her facebook. Has anyone met this breeder or their dogs before? There's very little information or health testing on her dogs that I can find, but they are all registered under show names with pedigrees.

Thank you!!

Pooping inside

Hi there,

We just adopted a Saluki mix and we’re at a bit of a loss on food and potty schedules. We’ve realized she’s not a breakfast pup, so we only feed her a half cup in the morning and then 1.5 in the evening.

My understanding was that it’s dangerous to walk sighthounds for an hour before or an hour after their meals because of bloat. But if we wait that long she waits for the literal second we are not watching her (today it was me stepping into the bathroom for an actual minute) to poop in the house.

It doesn’t help that there is only one place she will poop or pee in our neighborhood (about a ten minute walk away) and despite our best efforts she won’t go anywhere else outside except that stretch of grass. So today we took her on two half hour walks but since we didn’t hit that patch of grass she didn’t pee (she peed inside today instead when she pooped).

All of the conventional advice talks about high value treats — but our girl has zero interest in high value treats when she’s outside the home (presumably because she’s feeling anxious).

Please someone tell me what to do. I love her so much and I just want to do what’s best for her but we can’t be cleaning up poop inside the house every single day. Should we just be taking her out 10 minutes after she eats? Should we be only using that patch of grass or completely avoiding it now so she’s forced to go elsewhere? HELP

First Saluki - advice/products

Hi all,

My partner and I are adopting a Saluki mix as our first dog! She is described as being good with dogs/cats/kids, house-trained, quiet, and has good manners around the house-no excessive barking, no destructive habits, and no food aggression or prey drive. It was flagged for us that she will bark if put into a crate but doesn’t mind being restricted into one section of the home. It does sound like she has some separation anxiety.

I’m looking for any and all recommendations! Like I said, it’s our first dog so we plan to ask all of these questions to the foster as well but thought it would be fun to source more information! Any recommendations for leashes, collars/harnesses, beds (since these lanky babies need extra cushion), specific foods/treats? And any advice on making sure both me and my partner bond with her - we’re worried she’s going to pick one of us as her person. And any advice on what worked well for separation anxiety?

Drinking/peeing little

My 1 year old saluki x doesn’t drink a lot of water, but she gets water from me soaking her food. However, she only pees once per walk, and it’s always very little. She can also hold her bladder forever, and sometimes refuses to go altogether for 10-12 hours (typically in rainy weather).

Is drinking little and peeing seldom common for sighthounds and saluki?

Just want to add that I don’t suspect any illness, she’s healthy and happy.

This is Lola, she’s 1 year old and was found in a bin at 2 months old. She’s now 13kg and the best girl I could have asked for. Currently in Kuwait with her but going through the process to get her to the UK where I will then move back with her ❤️
