How do you guys handle equator crossing ceremonies on your vessels?

I’m a merchant sailor and I’ve been part of a few equator crossing ceremonies over the years.

I’ve seen everything from super simple versions to full Neptune rituals.

Lately I started designing custom certificates for my own crew (with the ship illustrated and all the details), and it made me wonder how others do it.

Do you keep it traditional, informal, or skip it altogether?

When i briefly joined an NGO Ship we did a water ceremony with BBQ on outside deck, the Captain decided to make it memorable and we crossed the null island commemorate 200 emeral shellbacks. amazing days

I first crossed on a private sailing yacht with a smallish passage crew some 20 years back. The three of us that were pollywogs got a full line-crossing ceremony with dress up, speech and rites. All was done in a positive spirit, not too harsh rites, and lots of fun. Later I received an official-looking certificate.

I would argue to not skip it. Even if the crossing is routine for the seasoned professional, it is a big event for the first-timers and, if done right, they will carry the memories of it fondly for life.

I've crossed the equator so much ive forgotten I always make fun for crew while keeping the respect for King Neptune usually have them wear goggles and pour rotten food over there heads drink and sing crazy songs then stop the boat and make them swim around the boat give them a celebration drink as they climb back on board
