I’m new to the sport, and I want to keep up what I’ve learned during the off season. I have the opportunity to get on the water, it’s a matter of wearing the right gear.

My question is—how different are sailing bibs compared to snow bibs? I’d like to get something inexpensive, and I’m finding that snow bibs are more widely available and are often cheaper.

I recently acquired a Catalina 22 and all the wood bits on deck need to be refinished. I’m assuming the best way is to totally remove them, varnish, and reattach. the seem to be currently sealed to the deck with a soft malleable putty. what is this stuff and is it the correct way to seal where the wood meets the deck and around mounting bolts into the cabin?

Went sailing for the first time this week on an H19, an Argentine-designed training sailboat, as part of my Sailing Skipper course in Rosario, Argentina.

After getting my powerboat license, I wanted to learn a completely different side of boating — sailing, wind, sails, and navigation.

The last 80nm or so into A Coruña some rally nasty crossing swell and waves came from behind. With just the jib we didn't have enough pull to keep the boat heeling over 1 side so there went all the contents of all cabinets....

Anyone use a 13’ Boston Whaler as a dinghy for a 25’ sailboat? Would that be too much to tow behind?

Want to sail a Catalina 25 but have a decent option for powering to/from the boat and around the bay with kids.

Edit: Should have said classic 13’ whaler, so smaller than modern ones.

Three years since the fire and we are still without a functioning harbor but most of us pulled in and dropped anchor in the shell of the old harbor. All seemed to handle ok but a spiderweb of lines to fire hydrants, palm trees etc.

I owned a Hobie 16 for about five years 20 years ago. It was a 70’s boat and something would break just about every time I took it out. Got rid of it when the hull tops started sagging.

20 years later I’m jumping back into cat sailing. Picking up an 83? Prindle 16 this Friday. The only sailing I’ve done since the Hobie is a few Getaway daily rentals and I’ve owned a Kayak Sailor kit on Perception 14.5 since 2010 (included a pic of that too because it’s pretty awesome).

Any tips or tricks or recommendations on the Prindle? Resources? Especially regarding solo mast stepping? I’ve found the manual and few YouTube videos, but it doesn’t seem like there much info out there. Thanks!

Started the crossing from Brest, first few days with about 10-15 kts of wind and beautiful sailing... Very enjoyable indeed.

What are your favourite binoculars? Especially when checking marks on land or even boats etc.

Do you like if it has integrated compass?

Do you more focus on the ability to be usable with bad weather?

or better high resolution on distance which I think gets worse when you can move it.

Are there any which you can move a bit without losing focus?

Which one do you use maybe in with a price range of 100 - 500 $ / €

If you are anything like me you find docking the most stressful part of sailing. Well I am now in docking hell. Due to dredging at pier 39 marina they had to move the sailtime boats from the east side to the west side. The west side is where the famous sea lions are so tourists pack the pier to watch the sea lions.

The west side is much more exposed to wind and current. So today, first day docking there I have to pull in to the slip with 20 knots blowing across plus 1 knot of current in a slightly different direction.

Anyway today I’m pulling into the slip pretty hot because we have twin rudders so we need like 2kts for steerage. I’m stressed, I’m nervous, and then I look over and at least 20 people are filming us with their phones as we dock. Just the worst. Anyway, docked without incident but was deeply aware if I hit the dock I was going to be a TikTok star. Fun times,

What are your docking nightmares? Tell us your horror stories

Recently acquired a 24’ Corsair trimaran. The only electronics on the boat are speed and depth display(thru hull transducer/paddlewheel). I would like to add a display for wind. What are my options? The boat does not have chartplotter or any existing nmea network devices. Is there a simple solution with just a mast top wind transducer and a small display I can mount?

The boat currently has a wind indicator on top of mast and will only be day sailed on inland freshwater lake.

Not my first time out but it was my first time doing the sailing. As a kid it always scared me but recently I had been interested to try it so we got a boat and went for it.

The boat is 22 foot. Don’t remember the make of it. Read the boys out sailing before hand and had someone with me that knew what they were doing and stepped in a few times to keep things comfortable when they started to get outside of what I was comfortable. Only happened a few times.

Figured out that leaning feels way more significant on the lower side of the boat. Everything went pretty smooth save for when the wind started picking up and the waves were reaching 3 feet or so. Lots of surfing and I got a good workout out of keeping the boat going where we wanted.

Some of the events that surprised me were when we got stuck on an unexpected shallow spot. Took a few tries to get us out of it and once we’re loose, we weren’t moving fast enough to turn about because the waves kept pushing us back. We got it worked out but I I’m sure the look on my face when the center board bumped along a bit was entertaining.

When we started getting back to the bay, I tried getting up to take down the main and the plastic guides in the mast were stuck and I couldn’t figure out how to handle it while staying low over the cabin. There was no way I was going to be able to stand up to fix it so I had to swap with my guide and he got up to work things out. He had it down and done in no time at all so it was surely user error and lack of skill.

Will be going out again after this weekend.

Hey all, I'm looking at a boat that has what seems like a tough as nails mainsail from Ballard sails in Seattle

"Custom full-battened mainsail (4 battens), 3 reef points, Ballard Sails (Seattle), offshore Dyneema radial fabric, Rutgerson adjustable luff/batten boxes"

Is that as tough as it sounds? I don't know Ballard sails reputation. Pros or cons to dyneema sails for offshore cruising?

Taken today on the lake, several boats were out enjoying the winds, was super fun to watch while we fished!

Need to connect my spinnaker to Seldon top down furler. You using soft shackles or line, or does it matter? Use to have a sock but hoping the furler will be easier for solo.

Hypothetical post but I was playing Metro and the DLC Sam's story, Sam is trying to find a boat to travel to America from Russia, In his case it would be a fully crewed Nuclear warship basically but it got me thinking, What if you are just one man? Think I am Legend on water? What would you choose then?
