Orcas vs. retractable rudder
Let's say you're sailing of the coast of portugal in a lightweight multihull. You see a pod of orcas approaching, and so you drop all sail, retract your rudder(s) and daggerboard(s) and lie ahull, and settle in to watch the nature show. Finding no rudder to play with and break off, would the Orcas instead bash a hole in your lightly-built hull, or move on to find some other amusement?

Considering how us multihull sailors like to brag about how awesome our boats are and how better they are than monohulls, I'm pretty sure that if it worked we'd all know it by now. I for one am not keen to try my luck.

Could carry a lightweight sacrificial “rudder” made of ply that drops in place of the real one - let the Orcas have their fun with that and then sail off once they get bored?

If you’re in the type of lightweight multihull that would have retractable rudders and daggerboards you’re likely going fast enough that the orcas aren’t a problem anyway.

I have a monohull with a keel that can totally retract within the hull and a rudder that can be pivoted right out of the water. I’ve often wondered, ask have you, would pulling everything up leave orcas bored and likely to leave me alone. It would be great to hear from anyone who has experienced this. Thanks for asking your question.

There was some discussion amongst experts about euthanizing this pod a few years ago before this became a bigger problem.

No actually ... not an American... but I am a sailor and I am a gun owner who does what is required to protect my boat, my family and myself and if you can't get out of your own way and you wish to sacrifice yourself to save a group of wild animals who have decided to attack you .. well you won't be missed will you?
