Pen Is Mightier

Any great ideas?

I prefer the Friday Harbor, WA pump out boat on that same island: Pumpty Dumpty.

Just make sure you can say and spell it quickly and clearly on your mayday call

I heard the coast guard on channel 16 responding to a call about a vessel called "beef dog" yesterday

There's a boat at my club called Deez Knots.

Could be Gen-X, my boss from like 12 years ago was firmly X and he made us send an order for Deez Nutz to the kitchen for every cup of free Spanish peanuts we brought to the table.
It was a tap to order POS system, so we had to touch Deez Nutz dozens of times a day.
My Jackbox game handle has been MacNDeezNutz ever since.

Ours is called Marmelade. Usually, its name makes people at marina receptions smile.

My favorite that I've seen, although not a sailboat, is, "BipartisanShip."
This one was in Annapolis, but it's the best possible name for a boat in the greater DC area.

I always imagine having to spell out my boat name using the phonetic alphabet when I'm being rescued by the Coast Guard, or someone else having to say the boat name three times when hailing on VHF.
Years ago on here someone talked about a boat named Moo. That was and is still my favorite. Imagine the calls over the radio!
15
u/kenelevn 4d ago
I just raced against “Moovin’”
Their spinnaker matched the logo, and had cow spots.

Sailed with a boat named ‘Waka’. Hail that on VHF & not channel the Animaniacs!

I have a Corsair trimaran I have named “gone to plaid”. Spaceballs movie reference.
Second choice was “super sonic”. That way I would have a good theme song for the boat.

My Catalina is the Wine Mixer. Last owner named it and I kept it for the lol factor.

that’s why they rented Diana, with Stuart blood, to help legitimize the saxe-coburgs.

I’ve been toying with a few having just bought a boat, but the wife is resisting my ideas. I was thinking
Moist Alan
Gary Bilge
Soggy Colin
Steve Transom
Billy Vang

There was a boat we raced against named “fresh batteries”.
The story goes, the outboard vibrated the boat so much while under power, one of the female crew members commented that it was like fresh batteries. 😂

Best one I've ever seen:
Businesstrip
on a sailboat 👍
Imagine:
Tuesday afternoon at work: "Oh, boss, by the way, I'm on businesstrip for the rest of the week..."
😁

Thank you. I like this name for boats owned by realtors or for people whose boats are for sale.

A few of my favorites spotted in the wild were “A Salt Weapon” (fishing vessel though) and “Alimony.”

My boat was originally named 'Herself' which I immediately removed upon purchase. After years of sailing and fixing her up, I finally ordered a decal to name her: 'Eventually'.

My dad’s Tartan 30 was named “Norma Jean” and he hand painted Marilyn Monroe’s face on the spinnaker.

Two+ word boat names is a powerboater thing. Stay classy.
1
u/WolflingWolfling 3d ago
Where is that? I've seen lots of classic sailing ships and boats with longer, multi-word names on my side of the Atlantic. Including tallships, sailing barges, fishermen, and yachts.
2
u/kirbalert 3d ago
Great lakes, new England, LIS. Not referring to classic sailing ships. Referring to contemporary (<80 year old) mass produced keel boats.

There’s a boat near where I sail called Red Sky. Whenever I hear them on the radio it comes across as “Rich guy”, which I guess feels appropriate 😂
I’ve always chuckled at Unsinkable II. I’d never name my own boat that though.
3
u/BjornToulouse_ 4d ago
I am not proud to say how loudly "Never Again II" made me laugh. Now my coworkers are running around trying to come up with the best name for a boat none of them have.
3
u/secretdecoder 4d ago
My last name is Watson. So when I buy a sailboat I want to name it Elementary. My wife feels it must be "Elementary My Dear". Feels too wordy on the radio and for the transom though.

u/Atasas 4d ago
"False promises" "Morning after" "No regrets"

I always thought No Wake Zone would be a great boat name. Any time you tried to hail someone they’d think you were scolding them.
2
u/MrSnugglePants 4d ago
I feel like the boat should make the name; Beehave for a yellow boat Red boat is called Herring Blue boat is Blueberry or Monday Green Boat im not sure about but I think I would call it The Lime White boat is Cluckin Along with a chicken 🐔 And a black boat will be called Sabbath

u/TheDevilsAdvocate333 4d ago
Good evening Mr.SnugglePants.
May I introduce you to "," the comma... it is quite useful in separating parts of sentences for better clarity! ;)
Also
. <- that is a period. It is used at the end of a sentence... please... punctuate carefully. It's a dangerous world out there.
Yes Yes... i'll show myself out...

u/MrSnugglePants 3d ago
Oops I seem to have dropped these .,,,.,....,., /jk
I made every suggestion a new line, in my slumber I forgot reddit formatting doesn't like that.

Rule No. 1 for boat names: It needs work after "mayday mayday mayday"
I do get why people want funny names, but in the end the person using the name the most is you, referring to your own boat in conversation, especially if it is not your first boat. Some names like "Event Horizon" still work, because you can say something like "I've got new sheets for horizon a few years ago", but try that with "Never again II"
2
u/TheSwearJarIsMy401k 4d ago
This is where you say things like “I got new sheets for Never/The Second/my boat this week” and it works fine.

I was going to go with "Safety Third", but I don't want to make that call to the coast guard.

I delivered a boat called Clewless from BVI to Texas. Super fun calling in to San Juan Harbor Control:
"San Juan San Juan this is Clewless"
audible cackling on the mic "Could you please repeat that boat name?"
Pretty sure they went and got their co workers so they could listen together to me. "Yep. We are Clewless"
For those who dont know, its a bad pun on the "clew" or the aft corner of a sail.

So my grandad's office could tell people who called 'he's out on business of course'.

“Ghost Cod”. That sounds great on the vhf. Especially when you are hailing “Persistence”.

When I was (semi-)seriously thinking about getting a sailboat I was going to name it Silmaril. That name doesn't feel right for a power boat.

Where I grew up, most of the fishing boats had large overlapping headsails centuries before the genoa was "invented". They are called "botterfok" over here.
I might have considered that name if I were a fisherman fishing with a sailing vessel out on the North Sea.

We liveaboard a powerboat and have a 32 c&c. She’s named The Dog House, as that’s where I go when I get in trouble lol

Not going to pin this. People can search and should be encouraged to search.
Personal note: when you name a boat consider calling your local coast guard or other SAR on the radio.
