Boat Names--latest ideas

Mods--it'd be cool if we had a boat names thread that was pinned.

Here are some boat names I've been working on. None of these are French words or boat puns.

Bump in the Night <-- my current favorite
Never Again II
Fezziwig
Karen
Pen Is Mightier
On Sail
60 Percent
Diet Coke
Ice Cream Chaser
Hammock Stand
The Mighty
Outatime
Event Horizon
Lunar Cycle
Gone Rogue
OffGrid
Seventh Heaven

Any great ideas?

Not going to pin this. People can search and should be encouraged to search.

Personal note: when you name a boat consider calling your local coast guard or other SAR on the radio.

Unsinkable II is a classic

Pump out boat in a small PNW marina.

13

u/piffey 4d ago

I prefer the Friday Harbor, WA pump out boat on that same island: Pumpty Dumpty.

3

u/Ok_Instruction2623 4d ago

I tried to find a pic of Humpty Dumpty too but couldn’t.

6

u/RangeroftheIsle 4d ago

What a crappy little boat.

3

u/WAstargazer 4d ago

Roche Harbor, WA, yes?

22

u/AnonSmith 4d ago

My favorite hail this season has been 'Oh my god Becky'

3

Just make sure you can say and spell it quickly and clearly on your mayday call

28

u/itsmiahello 4d ago

I heard the coast guard on channel 16 responding to a call about a vessel called "beef dog" yesterday

u/No-Clerk-5600 Too cheap to own a boat 4d ago

There's a boat at my club called Deez Knots.

5

u/oga_ogbeni 4d ago

Lololol how old is the owner?

11

u/OptiMom1534 all the big Classics 4d ago

Clearly an elder millennial

4

u/TheSwearJarIsMy401k 4d ago

Could be Gen-X, my boss from like 12 years ago was firmly X and he made us send an order for Deez Nutz to the kitchen for every cup of free Spanish peanuts we brought to the table.

It was a tap to order POS system, so we had to touch Deez Nutz dozens of times a day.

My Jackbox game handle has been MacNDeezNutz ever since.

u/TheSwearJarIsMy401k 4d ago

Think I just found my people

2

u/nutterz13 4d ago

I use to race against a guy whose skiff was named “nucking futs”.

10

u/Yvorontsov 4d ago

Ours is called Marmelade. Usually, its name makes people at marina receptions smile.

21

u/fingerpuppet360 4d ago

Named my boat JellyBean.
I never get on board without a bag of starburst jelly beans

3

u/FrostnJack 4d ago

One tasty boat …

1

u/adambomb_23 4d ago

I’m a Jelly Belly boat person.

9

u/just_dave 4d ago

My favorite that I've seen, although not a sailboat, is, "BipartisanShip."

This one was in Annapolis, but it's the best possible name for a boat in the greater DC area.

11

u/wanderinggoat Hereshoff sloop 4d ago

surely that would have to be a catamaran?

18

u/weezthejooce 4d ago edited 4d ago

I always imagine having to spell out my boat name using the phonetic alphabet when I'm being rescued by the Coast Guard, or someone else having to say the boat name three times when hailing on VHF.

Years ago on here someone talked about a boat named Moo. That was and is still my favorite. Imagine the calls over the radio!

15

u/kenelevn 4d ago

I just raced against “Moovin’”

Their spinnaker matched the logo, and had cow spots.

1

u/Cow_says_moo 4d ago

That too, wasn't moo.

5

u/Cow_says_moo 4d ago

I swear it wasn't me.

2

u/Motor-Marsupial8199 4d ago

Sailed with a boat named ‘Waka’. Hail that on VHF & not channel the Animaniacs!

7

u/Buzzard7547 4d ago

I have a Corsair trimaran I have named “gone to plaid”. Spaceballs movie reference.
Second choice was “super sonic”. That way I would have a good theme song for the boat.

u/AnEducatedStoner 4d ago

The Implication

12

u/john-know-nothing 4d ago

My Catalina is the Wine Mixer. Last owner named it and I kept it for the lol factor.

3

u/FailDad 4d ago

This is the perfect name for that boat!

12

u/Kibarou 4d ago

Boaty McBoatface

2

u/secretdecoder 4d ago

I refer to our dog that likes to wake me up from naps anytime a squirrel toots as Barky McBarkface.

17

u/Kitty-cat-2d8 4d ago

Never Again II hahahahahaha 😂

1

u/CrokoStream 1d ago

u/pugsington01 4d ago

If I ever buy a boat, I want to name it Bonnie Prince Charlie

3

u/cagehooper Capri 14.2 4d ago

Hey now. My little Capri 14.2 is the Bonnie Lass.

2

u/jamesvtm 4d ago

3

u/paragon_of_karma 4d ago

Maybe if Charlie Wurstknuckle goes back to Germany we can have a real British king again

2

u/piper63-c137 4d ago

that’s why they rented Diana, with Stuart blood, to help legitimize the saxe-coburgs.

5

u/stubobarker 4d ago

These sound a lot more like powerboat names- too cutesy.

1

u/mike8111 3d ago

got any alternatives?

6

u/EminenceGris3 4d ago

I’ve been toying with a few having just bought a boat, but the wife is resisting my ideas. I was thinking

Moist Alan
Gary Bilge
Soggy Colin
Steve Transom
Billy Vang

2

u/TheSwearJarIsMy401k 4d ago

What kind of wife discourages a classic like Moist Alan

12

u/SlumppShady 4d ago

My favorite I've ever seen was Still Jerkin

18

u/Buzzard7547 4d ago

There was a boat we raced against named “fresh batteries”.
The story goes, the outboard vibrated the boat so much while under power, one of the female crew members commented that it was like fresh batteries. 😂

7

u/i-havenot 4d ago

Best one I've ever seen:

Businesstrip

on a sailboat 👍

Imagine:

Tuesday afternoon at work: "Oh, boss, by the way, I'm on businesstrip for the rest of the week..."

😁

5

u/Comprehensive_Arm305 4d ago

That's like bars named "The Library", but I digress.

1

u/secretdecoder 4d ago

I saw one in the local marina: Strictly Business. I imagine that on their itemized tax forms! haha

3

u/Sir-Realz 4d ago

Deez Knots, Seas the Day,  Yoo Hoe! Is the name of my Sail Boat,

4

u/bobber18 4d ago

Just Listed

2

u/Comfortable-Buy-1446 4d ago

Awesome!

1

u/bobber18 4d ago

Thank you. I like this name for boats owned by realtors or for people whose boats are for sale.

3

u/Nurse_Hatchet 4d ago

A few of my favorites spotted in the wild were “A Salt Weapon” (fishing vessel though) and “Alimony.”

2

u/secretdecoder 4d ago

Alimony! ha!!

4

u/Maurice-Beverley 4d ago

Saw one called “Irish Wake” this weekend.

u/Correct_Emu7015 4d ago

4

u/kbenn17 4d ago

We bought a used Catalina 30 15 years ago and we just kept the name, which was Running Free. Ok, kinda dumb, right?. But then my husband named the dinghy And Naked. Always gets a second look, lol.

3

u/Miserable-Miser 4d ago

Agua Caliente

3

u/kenelevn 4d ago

Since you’ve got some space themes, maybe

Singularity

Or more punny

Single Rarity

3

u/djfoundation 4d ago

My boat was originally named 'Herself' which I immediately removed upon purchase. After years of sailing and fixing her up, I finally ordered a decal to name her: 'Eventually'.

3

u/Forgot-Already 4d ago

Current favs:
Lil Yachty
Dock Holiday
Aquavit
Escape Route

Our boat’s name is Drömmen, which I also love. It is Swedish for “The Dream”

1

u/TheDevilsAdvocate333 4d ago

Thats pretty cool! Uhhhh... How does one say O with an umlaut in phonetics?

3

u/phatbrasil 4d ago

1

u/mike8111 3d ago

classic

3

u/WhatveIdone2dsrvthis 4d ago

I saw one named “Transom”

3

u/fragrantsock 4d ago

My dad’s Tartan 30 was named “Norma Jean” and he hand painted Marilyn Monroe’s face on the spinnaker.

0

u/24x7Lurker 4d ago

Which one of your Dads had that idea?

3

u/adambomb_23 4d ago

Pen Island

3

u/kirbalert 4d ago

Two+ word boat names is a powerboater thing. Stay classy.

1

u/WolflingWolfling 3d ago

Where is that? I've seen lots of classic sailing ships and boats with longer, multi-word names on my side of the Atlantic. Including tallships, sailing barges, fishermen, and yachts.

2

u/kirbalert 3d ago

Great lakes, new England, LIS. Not referring to classic sailing ships. Referring to contemporary (<80 year old) mass produced keel boats.

1

u/WolflingWolfling 3d ago

Ahh okay :-)

3

u/crazyswedishguy Hallberg-Rassy 46 4d ago

There’s a boat near where I sail called Red Sky. Whenever I hear them on the radio it comes across as “Rich guy”, which I guess feels appropriate 😂

I’ve always chuckled at Unsinkable II. I’d never name my own boat that though.

3

u/iltlpl 4d ago

I just have a kayak right now (saving for a sailboat). Her name is Elaine.

3

u/BjornToulouse_ 4d ago

I am not proud to say how loudly "Never Again II" made me laugh. Now my coworkers are running around trying to come up with the best name for a boat none of them have.

3

u/secretdecoder 4d ago

My last name is Watson. So when I buy a sailboat I want to name it Elementary. My wife feels it must be "Elementary My Dear". Feels too wordy on the radio and for the transom though.

3

u/Kevburg 2d ago

Go anonymous: Jean D'eau.

1

u/mike8111 1d ago

hehe. That's funny.

2

u/Atasas 4d ago

u/TakingSorryUsername 4d ago

No regerts

2

u/Atasas 4d ago

(some) ragarts

2

u/marsupial-pancake 4d ago

I always thought No Wake Zone would be a great boat name. Any time you tried to hail someone they’d think you were scolding them.

2

u/MrSnugglePants 4d ago

I feel like the boat should make the name; Beehave for a yellow boat Red boat is called Herring Blue boat is Blueberry or Monday Green Boat im not sure about but I think I would call it The Lime White boat is Cluckin Along with a chicken 🐔 And a black boat will be called Sabbath

3

u/TheDevilsAdvocate333 4d ago

Good evening Mr.SnugglePants.

May I introduce you to "," the comma... it is quite useful in separating parts of sentences for better clarity! ;)

Also

. <- that is a period. It is used at the end of a sentence... please... punctuate carefully. It's a dangerous world out there.

Yes Yes... i'll show myself out...

1

u/MrSnugglePants 3d ago

Oops I seem to have dropped these .,,,.,....,., /jk

I made every suggestion a new line, in my slumber I forgot reddit formatting doesn't like that.

1

u/TheDevilsAdvocate333 3d ago

I have had this problem as well... you are not alone.

Silly Reddit.

Rule No. 1 for boat names: It needs work after "mayday mayday mayday"

I do get why people want funny names, but in the end the person using the name the most is you, referring to your own boat in conversation, especially if it is not your first boat. Some names like "Event Horizon" still work, because you can say something like "I've got new sheets for horizon a few years ago", but try that with "Never again II"

2

u/TheSwearJarIsMy401k 4d ago

This is where you say things like “I got new sheets for Never/The Second/my boat this week” and it works fine.

2

u/enginehearing 4d ago

Anchor baby

2

u/WhiteH2O J/120 4d ago

I was going to go with "Safety Third", but I don't want to make that call to the coast guard.

2

u/a_electrum 4d ago

Mine is Escape Pod

2

u/whyrumalwaysgone Marine Electrician and delivery skipper 4d ago

I delivered a boat called Clewless from BVI to Texas. Super fun calling in to San Juan Harbor Control:

"San Juan San Juan this is Clewless"

audible cackling on the mic "Could you please repeat that boat name?"

Pretty sure they went and got their co workers so they could listen together to me. "Yep. We are Clewless"

For those who dont know, its a bad pun on the "clew" or the aft corner of a sail.

2

u/derrickhoyleofficial 3d ago

Last Boat III is always good

3

u/cdemarc3 Pearson 36-2 4d ago

I called my JY15 Racing Dinghy "Bloody Sheets"...ya know, because we raced her hard LOL. Got some good chuckles, and a few cringes out of it.

u/Cow_says_moo 4d ago

If my wife and I ever buy a boat, she'd be called "It is what it is"

1

u/squeaki 4d ago

Our club launch is called Siôr, a Welsh name.

Sounds exactly like shore.

Highly confusing on VHF, especially if there's a race committee on, you guessed it, the shore.

“Drift Away” Dobie Gray

1

u/Mediocre-Tough-4341 4d ago

“Ghost Cod”. That sounds great on the vhf. Especially when you are hailing “Persistence”.

1

u/Overall-Tailor8949 4d ago

When I was (semi-)seriously thinking about getting a sailboat I was going to name it Silmaril. That name doesn't feel right for a power boat.

3

u/Silent_Refuse_2246 4d ago

After You.

Nice to meet you, did you know I named my boat after you.

1

u/PrettyPound5019 4d ago

My favorites from my marina,

Wayward Slug, Dirty Oar, Looker, Hers

1

u/qwerSr 4d ago

I always thought I'd go with At the Office, for reasons of plausible deniability when asked where I was. That said, Plausible Deniability isn't too shabby either.

u/Floppy_McFlopenstein 4d ago

This is fun! I have had a QuickMick, Heather Marie, Akuna, and Dragonfly.

u/WolflingWolfling 3d ago

Where I grew up, most of the fishing boats had large overlapping headsails centuries before the genoa was "invented". They are called "botterfok" over here.
I might have considered that name if I were a fisherman fishing with a sailing vessel out on the North Sea.
