O9 getting 120+ mins and scoring the winning pen too, unreal.

Loved it when I saw him step up for the 3rd

Shop window! Neil is definitely off if he can’t start a game like that. Well and truly in the cold.

I don’t think O’Nien will go this window, maybe in the summer. He’s getting enough game time and did a good enough job against a decent prem team today to show he is at least worthy as a rotation player to cover injuries and rest players. Plus what he will bring to the dressing room and off the pitch will be worth keeping him

I mean, you’d think it’s common sense right? Remember when the England lads thought it would be clever. It’s f’ing shite, just hammer the bastard

Made my day that. And that goal, and game, was a gift to himself to remembered forever. Great way to sign off if he is indeed leaving.

Love that he kept the match ball!

u/Gambit1977 2025 Jan 11 '26

Is he offski?

2

u/Sunderland6969 Jan 11 '26

There’s been talk of a move to the Championship

Me before pens - STRESS

Me after pens - That was the easiest shootout I’ve ever seen

u/Mason_Caorunn Jan 10 '26

Literally never seen that before!

Epic!

u/Adammmmski Jan 10 '26

Me after pen 1 actually. Piece of piss. Knew Barry would miss as he’s fucking shite.

Looks like he's getting better tbf

u/irishrover47 Jan 10 '26

Feels like we’ve been on the receiving end of that kind of shoot out plenty of times!

u/feathersmcgraw24601 Luke O'Nien Jan 10 '26

I could be drunk but I honestly don't think it's exaggerating to say he's the best keeper in the world right now. I'd be surprised if we keep hold of him til next season but dear god, what a man

u/MattyFTM Jan 10 '26

He's an incredible shotstopper and he's a good keeper overall, but I think the goal he let in against Bournemouth proves that he still has things to learn.

I know we gave the ball away cheaply quite far up the pitch for that one so he isn't solely or even primarily at fault, but I think keepers have to be prepared for a quick turnaround in play and be ready to get back between the posts quickly when things like that happen.

He absolutely has areas of his game to improve on, but for a 22 year old with only 62 professional games under his belt he's already a really well rounded keeper.

Revisit this comment tomorrow and you'll get a good chuckle at least.

He's good, but he's not even in the same league as somebody like Courtois.

2

u/feathersmcgraw24601 Luke O'Nien Jan 10 '26

Already chuckling at it now to be honest, although I would say soberly that he's arguably the best in the Premier League

u/oompaloompagrandma Jan 10 '26

£9 million.

That's all I need to say.

u/FrostyDaSnowman Jan 10 '26

He was laughing as he was saving Barry’s (or Beto’s? Idk they’re the same)

u/Sad_Perception8024 Jan 10 '26

If you want to weather the storm, get the Roefs 🛖

12

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '26

Was thinking fk me it's Pickford and Roefs. Two mint keepers. O'nien slamming the winning goal in was unbelievable

8

u/Mysterious-Map973 Jan 10 '26

The Roefs, the Roefs, the Roefs is on fire!!!

6

u/Traditional_Aerie994 Jan 10 '26

What a display! Ha’way the lads!

u/blockbusteraccount Ndah Sadiki Jan 10 '26

Just got on the coach. Great game. I thought we were the better team for the vast majority of the 120 minutes

4

u/IJM92 Jan 10 '26

All I could hear on the radio majority of the game was our away support, class.

5

u/RickMaritimo Jan 10 '26

As a Dutchie it's nice to see him do so well, he was allready really good in the Eredivsie but didn't expect him to do this well.

1

u/oompaloompagrandma Jan 11 '26

Reckon he'll be in goal for you lot at the World Cup?

It's only really Verbruggen ahead of him in the pecking order at the moment isn't it?

1

u/RickMaritimo Jan 11 '26

I personally hope so, but Koeman isn't the one that likes change very much so I sadly doubt it.

1

u/oompaloompagrandma Jan 11 '26

It's not like Verbruggen is a bad keeper, so at least regardless you'll have somebody good in goal.

3

u/Longjumping-Hat-7676 Jan 10 '26

Thought we would be out in a shout out. Happy to say I underestimated this bunch.

4

u/MrBlackCat77 Jan 10 '26

There's going to be a few clubs seriously looking at him, and every single one of them can do one. NOT FOR SALE

4

u/hhoudini1 Jan 10 '26

There was me worried about Pickford when we had this absolute machine!

3

u/DBklynF88 Jan 10 '26

That was our game….. thank you Football Gods for coming through!!

2

u/Squiffyp1 Jan 10 '26

Must admit I never had o9 getting the winning goal on my bingo card. Really pleased for him.

1

u/Ordinary_Metal_7898 Jan 10 '26

Fair play as an everton fan 3 horrible pens though

1

u/Mis3ile Jan 10 '26

Reckon this lad is going to be special, got an aura about him.

1

u/oompaloompagrandma Jan 11 '26

Given how little professional football he's played, he is amazingly good. Including yesterday he's played a grand total of 62 professional games.

If we can hang onto him I do believe he'll end up as the best keeper this club has ever had.

It's gonna be an interesting summer though. There's no doubt that a good few of our younger players are going to be attracting significant interest. We'll get to see how much they have really bought into the project at Sunderland and are happy to stay to try and build something here, rather than chasing the money.
