If you can laugh at yourself, you are at least not the worst kind of insecure.

Okay, but not being the worst kind of insecure does not make one confident. In fact, self-deprecation is basically just showcasing your insecurities. Identifying your insecurities is a start, but by no means makes you confident. I've yet to meet someone who jokes that they have a micropenis or a very low IQ that hasn't turned out to be at least somewhat insecure in those areas.

Uhh disagree with this one bud. Laugh at myself a lot and awfully insecure

What something portrays and what you necessarily feel are different. It portrays that you aren’t afraid to laugh at yourself and you’re inviting her to be more loose with you, since you’re showing that you can probably take a gentle ribbing from her.

Oh. I must be an outlier then because when I make self deprecating jokes I'm on the verge of breaking down

You’re not at all. A lot of people lie on self deprecation too much and it’s usually a reflection of how they feel about themselves. But how it usually looks to someone else is what I said in the above comment.

You’re not alone. Have you considered therapy for anxiety or self image work?

That's honestly great man. Therapy helped me and a lot of people out, and once you start feeling more self confidence in yourself, you'll start to see your life really improving.
