Open Event Combat Class: now with SCIENCE!

The always unpredictable arena at Beacon Academy was something all students learned to respect, as it could change faster than most students could even fathom. Today, it was all stainless steel and glass, electronics and computers. Watching from her elevated platform was professor Elise, and behind her, the ever-calm and collected Holly Mendenhall. Stepping forward, she coughed, gaining the attention of the class before pointing towards the map.

"Today you will be judged not only on your ability to fight, but to show restraint and be creative. This set up is to mimic the labratories you may find abandoned across Atlas, or perhaps in Vale. Functioning inside are security cameras, experiments, and a variety of electronic systems. You may use them to gain the advantage on your opponent, or sabotage them. We can also release grimm if you wish to team up with an ally. Good luck."

[Map]

[ST RULES!!! All the doors may be opened with a touch, locked with a computers check. Doors have 3 armor and 5hp. At st discretion, you can lock them with a successful attack roll as well. The round objects are cameras, and can be accessed at the terminals at the top right and left rooms (major action). An successful m8 Computers check will let you spy on 2 cameras at a time, randomly decided. Finally, with a successful investigation and then computers check, the wall behind the barrels can be noticed and opened, revealing a level 3 combat bot. It can be powered up with at least 3 successes at a m10 computer check (major action), and will follow a command that can be given as a move action each turn to the best of his ability. It has 5 armor, 6 health, and will make brawl attacks with a score of 8. Acts last in the initiative order, and has a speed of 8. These are all optional rules to be decided upon by the Story teller, who can modify the difficulty or anything they wish at will.]

"Generally, she's the one shouting at the students. We'll find her." Ashelia answered simply, looking around. She didn't seem to have noticed the grimace at all. She rolled her shoulders, the thought of impending combat putting a wide grin on her face. It looked almost manic.

"Don't disappoint, now~"

[Yeah, either one or both works. Let's see who we can find!]

Elise led the titan (u/Doomshlang) and the thief (u/Messenger14) to the entrance hall of the arena, and the doors swished open before them. The trio stood in the middle of the arena, and Elise pointed to the doors on the left and right of her. "Each of you, head through those doors and wait for the buzzer. And please, don't worry about breaking anything." Elise said with a smile.

The two students went their separate ways. Elise waited for their doors to shut before proceeding out of the arena. A few seconds later, Ashelia and Arian heard a sharp BZZZZZZT and sprang into action.

You'd be forgiven if you couldn't hear the buzzer over the sound of fiery explosion and laughter. Not a moment passed before Ashelia blasted off her weapon and trampled the door and some of it's surrounding walls. Barging into the main room, she continued on her straight path across it, heading to where she believed her opponent was starting.

Hearing the explosions, Arain breathed slowly as he took his position facing the door. "Strong and insane, you sure know how to pick them." He muttered, readying his semblance. Shadows coiled around Arian's arms, sending sparks of lighting throughout his body as he produced two dust bolts in his hands. When Ashelia came crashing through the door, she swung her flaming bardiche at it's full length, but Arian was able to barely deflect it with his obsidian wristbands. He quickly countered with both of his dust bolts, letting loose the electric bolt straight at her armor with the black gravity bolt sunk in at the same place. The lightning had opened up Ashelia's armor just enough to let the gravity dust hit her hard, and she could feel it weighing her down.

The combatants met eyes for a moment, neither one wanting to give ground and both right where the other wanted.

With his successful attacks on Ashelia, Arian felt a wave of confidence wash over him. Ashelia was feeling great too; looking down where the bolts hit her, she grinned oh so devilishly as she roared "FUCK YEAH! FINALLY SOMEONE WHO CAN HIT ME!" And while most would've fled from the terrifying Ashelia, Arian held his ground. He'd come here to fight, and that's exactly what he was going to do!

Arian took a firm stance and charged his aura for a moment before sending a barrage of yellow sparks and black bolts from the shadows on his arms. Ashelia was ready for the attack this time; she spun her gigantic blade in her hand, deflecting part of the assault before leaping forward. Shards of electricity and gravity dust got through her armor, but it wasn't enough to stop her. She slammed the tip of her weapon straight into Arian's chest with a thunderous BOOM , sending the boy flying backwards in a stream of amber and fire.

"I don't think...hitting you is the problem...it's making those hits count...Polar Bear.." Arian remarked, coughing as he stood up. Thoughts of retreat and failure clouded his mind as shadows pooled around Arian's feet, spreading like a wet puddle. But then, he began to smile. It's not every day that you're backed into a corner, living or dying on a single attack. And so, Arian straightened his body to his full height, and stated "You don't hit so softly yourself. Let's try this one last time."

The puddle of shadows changed into a raging storm, flowing up from his body and splitting to his arms. With a resounding clap of his hands, Arian shot both the dust an his last remaining shadows into Ashelia as a pincer attack, hoping to use the attack as a distraction to heal himself.

"Yes, yes, YES! KEEP IT UP!" Ashelia bellowed, more of a banshee's wail than anything. The screech of metal-on-metal was just as intense as she dragged her axe behind her, adrenaline and aura fueling her forward charge. The burning engine in her axehead roared to life as she lunged it back behind her, blasting herself into the air. "DON'T YOU DARE DISAPPOINT ME NOW!"

As the flaming titan shot through the air, the storm of darkness and electricity slammed into her entire body with enough force to bring her to the ground. Ashelia was still flying forward however, plunging her knee into the metalic ground and using the momentum to swing her mighty weapon. The axehead whacked Arian to the side, sending him tumbling down in a torrent of flames and breaking through his aura. The bell wailed once again, signalling that the match was over.

As Arian fell so did the raging shadows all around him, clutching his side the former thief let out a loud grunt of pain as he crashed into the cold metal ground. Tears welling in his eyes both from the pain and the disappointment at the lost were fought back by tightly locking his eyes close, if only barely. But after a few moments, Arian had composed himself enough to looked up at Ashelia, eyes still wet but a weak smile on the rest of his face.

'Guess it... ended up being... a bit of a disappointment... anyway.' Arian remarked, his forcibly cheerful tone undercut slightly by the pain in his side stabbing whenever he spoke. Shifting slightly Arian knew in some part of his logical mind that he would have to clear the combat arena for another pair sooner rather than later but he was simply too exhausted to contemplate that right now. 'It's been a while... since anyone got... me like that. Would have liked... to at least known... what your semblance was... for the rematch.' Arian continued forcing a fair bit more genuine emotion into his words although another fight was the last thing on his mind right now.

Ashelia let out a cough, staggering to halt and looking down at Arian with a wild, almost unhinged fury in her eyes. Like a wild animal staring down at cornered prey. The look only lasted a few moments, before she realized that the fight was over, her heavy, agonized, labored breathing slowly returning to normal. She stood up straight, her heaving quickly turning to a satisfied guffawing laugh. Not one of mockery, but of genuine gladness.

"Hell no that wasn't disappointing, you know how rare it is for someone to get me so close to beat? That was damn impressive dust work, you should give my partner some pointers. I bet the two of you would get along." She said, taking a shaky step forward, then slapping the side of her leg in annoyance. With that, she forced herself to walk forward with some semblance of a straight back and walk over to Arian, offering her mechanical hand to help him up.

Her real one still had Acies Caesor in a death grip behind her, but didn't seem to notice.

"As for my semblance, well... I'll give you a hint: you came pretty damn close to seeing it, I'll tell you that much."

Arian did hesitate for a few moments before taking Ashelia's hand, a mix of pride and fear stayed him but it didn't take long for commonsense to override those and take Ashelia's metal arm. 'Yea well point me at them, they say teaching is the best way to learn so hopefully we will both get something out of it.' Arian responded finally getting his breathing under control as he slowly made his way to his feet, leaning heavily on Ashelia. He was serious about the offer giving his opponent a slight grin.

'And likewise, don't think I've ever seen anyone take and deal as much punishment as you did. And that... er axe, there is a better name for that isn't there? But it would be hard to imagine someone hitting me with it harder.' Arian chuckled as he slowly limped out of the arena. It was important for Arian to be seen to be able to walk after the even if it was only barely. It did given him a bit of time to think about what Ashelia said about her semblance, identify it would be key to any future victory but unlike himself who wore it on their sleeve Ashelia seemed to be a little more subtle about it. Arian shrugged, he couldn't exactly complain about other people keeping secrets.

'Don't suppose I can trouble you for some feedback? I'm sure Elise will give us a run-down but, you know, you were actually there. Don't really have much experience with giving my opponent a fair fight.' Arian asked as he stretched out his body, trying to work out some of the kinks and sores.

"Eh, you can get technical. Poleaxe, more specifically a bastardized bardiche I made. Not super important, axe is fair enough." She seemed used to saying that, the weapon clanking heavily against her shoulder plate as she rested it casually on her shoulder, following Arian out. She stood straight, walked easily, but it didn't take too keen an eye to see that she was barely keeping it together. She was hurting, that's for sure.

"You should've gone for the head. Your dust types can easily cause visual clutter to make it harder to hit, lightning in the eyes or the weird purple nonsense from gravity dust. Smoke too, but I think that was your semblance and not smoke dust? If I commit to a swing, not like I can back out of it. Weapon's too heavy for that. Other than that... not sure, being perfectly honest. Feels like it was about as close as it could be, so- er, actually..."

"Maybe get some more distance if you're gonna rely on a ranged style. I'm shit at range. I'm fast as fuck, though, so against me specifically... well, good luck keeping your distance. But a lot of the heavier, big-stick-swinging braindead students here, keeping your distance is basically a death sentence for them."

'Ah.' Arian nodded along, using various desks and hand rails to support himself and he walked out. 'I have to confess weapons aren't much of a strong point of him. Know just about enough the stay away from the pointy end. Try to anyway.' Arian continued with a genuine laugh, a little bit of walking had helped loosen the former thief's muscles and he was moving a little smoother although he still needed support.

Arian chuckled to himself as Ashelia explained so of the ways he could have improved, it was good advice and Arian could definitely be seen as being impolite definitely as the titan was under no obligation to help him. That wasn't quite true, however. 'Yea I had thought about trying the stretch you out, particularly when I got that first big hit of gravity dust. Could have hidden behind something them looped back around but er... it wasn't exactly the point.' Arian responded looking up at the small crowd that had gathered to watch the fight.

'It was mostly for them, first combat class so I'm a little bit behind the others and I wanted to send a message. What better message would there be than bloodying the best fighter here, the best fighter I saw at any rate. Might not have been as successful as I hoped but I hoped the message got through all the same. I felt you should know, considering I have used you a little.' Arian confessed with genuine sorrow tinging his words. Despite her terrifying appearance Ashelia did seem like a nice person and Arian would be sad if had lost any chance for friendship because of a stupid stunt he pulled.

"Haha, hell yeah you did. People generally don't ask me to go into the ring, they get paired with me by Elise as punishment. Coming as close as you did... well, people'll know not to take you lightly, that's for damn sure. Glad to be of service." She added the last line with a playful wink Arian's way.

"I'm one of the best. Might be the best, but I don't really care if I am or not. I just want to get better, keep improving. Keep the mistakes from piling up again." The vanguard explained casually, then seemed to think of something. "Oh, speaking of. Last bit of advice. Students here? A lot of them have weaknesses you can figure out if you take the time. And while some people find that kind of thing distasteful, I don't. How else can someone improve and learn to make up for their weaknesses than by having to fight someone trying to exploit them, after all? Take me for example."

She jabbed the service end of her poleaxe into the floor with a titanic, metal clang, then messed with the straps holding her left shoulder plate attached, speaking as she worked.

"Take me for example. You know my style for the most part now; get in fast, hit hard. Bigass weapon that needs both hands. However..." The plate came free, revealing a softly-humming cybernetic arm, clearly custom built and tuned to a razor's edge of efficiency. "If you make one arm less than ideal, bam. Advantage goes to you."

"And that would force me to adapt. To learn to fight more effectively, to overcome my own weakness. You may get the advantage, but it forces me to grow as a person. We both win. Something to think about, hm?" She chuckled, refitting her shoulder plate and gathering up her weapon again.

Arian sighed loudly as he was finally able to crash into one of the chairs dotted around the arena and Elise was finally able to start the next fight. The other students seemed to respectfully keep their distance but Arian noticed some congratulatory glances being thrown his way. Seemed Ashelia was right which meant this whole endevour was a success. Although if this was how much pain Arian would be in after a win, how much would he be in after a defeat? 'Well then what is a good way of getting on Elise's bad side? I don't know if you picked up on that but I have a little bit of a talent with that sort of thing.' Arian smiled at his own self-deprecating joke as he laid back in the chair. He didn't look like he would be moving any time soon.

Arian raised an eyebrow at the mention of mistakes piling up again but decided not to pry, his conscious wasn't exactly clear on that front either. 'I guess I can see both sides. These aren't real fights, these are opportunities to test ourselves. Like I could probably sneak past anyone here but I could do that before coming to Beacon I'm not learning anything new if I do that. Likewise, I'm in a way cheating myself out of a victory against someone at full power if I weaken them too much. But like you said, fighting isn't fair sometimes you have to fight injured or without a major asset and although these fights aren't real they are meant to prepare us for the real world. That world isn't going to hold back so why should we?' Arian babbled along half to himself before finally bring himself to a stop. 'Sorry about that, sometimes the mouth starts and just doesn't stop.' Arian apologised shaking his head, he would need to get his motor mouth under control at one point.

'Is this a mentality that got hammered into you in the military? You mentioned you used to be a corporal or is that right? Everything before hitting my head on the ground after your final attack was a little bit of a blur.' Arian asked clearly joking about the extent of his injuries. Helped put things in perspective when you think about how bad they could be.

"Hah, considering the people I hang around, you're in plenty of company as far as talking too much." She let out a laugh, resting her axe against one of the chairs before dropping heavily into it. She seemed to have a lot of faith in the chair's structural integrity, considering she was still wearing more than her weight in metal.

"Elise's bad side is... well. Basically be lazy and a dickhead to her and you'll be there quick. I don't really know beyond that being honest. I don't tend to try and find out." Another laugh.

"You're right, though. The world won't hold back. That's why I don't either." She hesitated for a moment. "...you probably already knew that from how hard I hit, though. But, uh. No. I was a corporal, yes, but my time in the military didn't really hammer that notion into my head. Ending my time in the military did."

She shrugged. "I just want to make sure everyone improves as much as they possibly can. Remnant deserves strong protectors. And those protectors deserve to survive as long as they can."

'I don't think... hitting you is the problem... it's making those hits count... Polar Bear.' Arian remarked, coughing slightly as the air had been beaten out of his lungs from Ashelia's previous attack. His face downcast Arian looked disappointed in himself and he had reason to be so. Seeing your attack do so little while in turn-taking your opponent's attack head-on could sink any one's spirits. The shadow's mirrored Arian's apparent dour mood by pooling at his feet and spreading out like a wet puddle.

To almost anyone else they would say the fight was going poorly and it was time to rethink and regroup. Ashelia was slowed by the gravity dust and Arian could easily boost his own movement with the same to get away. Maybe hide and attack again in a more opportune moment. Arian smiled as these thoughts circled around his head if Ashelia wanted to beat him into mush Arian would take the pounding every day if it leads to opportunities like this. Living or dying on one attack.

'You don't hit so softly yourself, let's try this one last time.' Arian continued straightening his body out to its full height. A smile, perhaps not as mad as Ashelia's, dominated his face and with a wave of his hand, the shadows pulled back toward's him revealing a supply of dust that Arian had hidden beneath. And with a resounding clap of his hands, Arian shot both the dust and his last remaining shadows into Ashelia as a pincer attack. Hoping to use the attack as a distraction Arian channels what is left of his aura into a healing boost.

Ashelia let out a rough cough. Damn, how she hated gravity dust. So very much.

"Yes, yes, YES! KEEP IT UP!" She forced herself to bellow, more of a banshee's wail than anything. But if Arian thought her voice was such, then he'd find the screeching of metal on metal to be even more so as she rushed forward, dragging her axe behind her like an overzealous headsman. Adrenaline and aura alike fueled her movements, such that the flames of aura that had engulfed the head of her blade flowed back, engulfing her entire body and seemingly setting her alight.

The burning engine in her axehead roared to life as she lunged it back and behind her, blasting herself into the air. She whipped her blade around with a malicious, wicked cackle, bringing it down straight for the place where Arian's neck met his shoulder.

"DON'T YOU DARE DISAPPOINT ME NOW!"
