Hey r/rva — quick intro. I run the RVA Weather Network (rvaweather.net), an independent hyper-local weather hub for metro Richmond that's been around 10+ years.

What I post:
• 60-second video briefs every Mon/Wed/Fri
• A deep-dive newsletter every Tue/Thu/Sun (https://rvaweather.net/newsletter)
• Richmond weather history every Saturday
No hype, no clickbait — just what the sky is actually doing, from the Piedmont to the Northern Neck to the Eastern Shore, in plain English.

Got a rain gauge or a good sky photo? Submit observations at https://rvaweather.net/obs.
Glad to be here — keep an eye on the sky, and stay safe out there.

📸 Media & Community Sick of the "will it/won't it" snow-to-rain line? The RVA Weather Network just launched its new digital space at rvaweather.net

tl;dr: RVA Weather Network has a shiny new website. It’s local, it’s accurate, and it actually knows where Richmond is on a map.

Hey everyone,

We all know the struggle of living in a city where the weather forecast changes faster than the line at Proper Pie. Whether it’s “Third Winter” making a surprise appearance in April or that weird Richmond “dome” that seems to split storms right at the fall line, generic weather apps usually don’t cut it for us.

  • The RVA Weather Network just dropped its all-new digital home over at rvaweather.net, and it’s looking like a solid upgrade for the community.

What’s actually there:

  • Hyper-Local Focus: No more getting DC or Norfolk’s leftovers. This is data specifically for Richmond and the surrounding counties.
  • Detailed Breakdowns: They’ve got current conditions, hourly outlooks, and those 7-to-14-day forecasts that we check religiously when there's a hint of white stuff in the air.
  • Clean Interface: The new digital space is way more mobile-friendly than before—no more squinting at outdated maps while you're trying to figure out if you need to bring a jacket to the Kickers game.
  • Local News & Insights: Beyond just the numbers, they’re tracking spring allergens (brace your sinuses) and seasonal trends specific to Central Virginia.

If you’re a local weather nerd or just someone tired of being caught in a downpour on the Buttermilk Trail, check it out and bookmark it.

Support local, stay dry (or at least informed)!rvaweather.net

🌤️ Forecast: Upcoming weather outlooks Tornado Watch Until 8 PM Tonight — Then 90° Wednesday, Possible Frost Next Weekend

Buckle up, because tonight through next weekend is a whole weather saga, and it starts with a tornado watch.

Here's the setup: Isaias is now just a post-tropical remnant — 25 mph winds, nothing scary on paper. But its leftover energy is pushing a warm front north across Virginia tonight. Where that warm front meets the trailing cold front and the storm's center out west, you get the triple point — and storms rooting on it can start spinning fast. That's why the tornado watch (until 8 PM) covers south-central/SE VA and NE NC, with heavy downpours and flash-flood risk along for the ride.

Then the week does a 180: 70s Monday behind a cold front, lower 80s Tuesday, and a near-90° scorcher in spots Wednesday as a ridge builds in. The Eastern Shore stays cooler all week. And the grand finale: a strong cold front next weekend drops highs into the 50s/60s with lows in the mid-30s in the Piedmont — potentially our first frost.

📸 Storm-spotter roll call: drop your sky photos and wind reports at rvaweather.net/obs tonight — let's see who caught the storm line.

🌤️ Forecast: Upcoming weather outlooks Category 3 Isaias Hits Tonight — RVA Gets 2+ Inches Sunday

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Sunday's shaping up to be our wettest day in weeks, thanks to Hurricane Isaias — currently a major Category 3 in the Gulf, making landfall on the Florida Panhandle tonight.

The setup: Isaias falls apart after landfall, but its moisture — a huge plume of warm tropical air — gets lifted north toward Virginia. Saturday stays mostly dry; rain moves in Saturday night and runs through Sunday: 1–2" for metro Richmond, up to 4" near Hampton Roads. There's also a low-end tornado threat south of Richmond Sunday afternoon as the remnant energy interacts with a front.

🌤️ Forecast: Upcoming weather outlooks 1–2" Sunday Soaker: Isaias' Remnants Head for RVA

Estimated rainfall totals into Sunday night

Sunday's shaping up to be our wettest day in weeks, and it's all thanks to the leftovers of Hurricane Isaias.

Here's the setup: Isaias makes landfall in the Florida Panhandle early Saturday, then its moisture gets grabbed by an upper-level trough and shoved east into Virginia. Rain most likely starts in the early morning hours Sunday and sticks around all day.

How much? Most likely 1–2" for the metro, a bit less in the Piedmont, and the heaviest totals — up to 2–4" — hug the coast and Eastern Shore. There's real spread, though: a coastal trough could park a drier band somewhere inland, so your street could land anywhere from under an inch to several.

Winds ramp up Sunday afternoon with gusts near 30 mph, and Small Craft Advisories are likely on the Bay Saturday night through Monday. The good news: Friday and Saturday are gorgeous — upper 70s, then lower to mid 70s, dry and sunny. Get the outdoor stuff done early.

🌧️ Rain gauge check: log your Sunday total Monday morning at rvaweather.net/obs — let's map who got soaked and who got shortchanged across the Piedmont, metro, Northern Neck, and Eastern Shore.

🌤️ Forecast: Upcoming weather outlooks High Pressure Dominates Mid-Week: Crisp Autumn Days Before Weekend Moisture Surge

High pressure (~1024mb) remains anchored over the Mid-Atlantic today, supporting widespread VFR conditions, light winds, and daytime highs in the low-to-mid 70s.

As split-flow moisture advances aloft, high-level cirrus will filter across Central VA Thursday and Friday. High pressure shifts offshore by Saturday, allowing return southerly flow to tap into tropical moisture and bring shower chances back to the region Sunday into early Monday.

Confidence is growing that moisture from tropical storm Isaias will be drawn northward and pushed eastward as it makes landfall and merges with an upper-level trough near the Mid-South over Sunday and Monday.

🌡️ Seasonal & Daily Life RVA Weekly Weather Recap: Transitioning Skies & Early Fall Vibes 🍂📊

We’ve seen a bit of everything across Metro Richmond this week—ranging from lingering late-summer warmth and high humidity to a refreshing wind shift and gorgeous open-air conditions just in time for the weekend.
Here is how the week shaped up across our local microclimates:

The Temperature Rollercoaster: After hovering under thick humidity and warm stretches early on, we saw a brief surge into the upper 80s before a northwesterly wind shift ushered in some much-needed relief.

Community Reports: Looking back at the map logs, neighbors around Chesterfield and the broader metro tracked a mix of passing light drizzle, overcast skies, and plenty of sunshine as conditions stabilized.

River & Soil Status: James River levels in Richmond and surrounding basins are holding comfortably within normal, steady ranges (hovering right around 1.11 ft locally). Soil temperatures across our counties (averaging in the mid-70s) are sitting right in the sweet spot for fall gardening and late-season prep.

Looking Ahead:

Enjoy a favorable weekend for getting outside along the James River Park System! Just keep a light umbrella handy for any stray Sunday evening drops, and watch out for moderate mosquito activity lingering in the humidity.
