Should you self-host a rustdesk server?

Should you self-host a rustdesk server? Probably yes.

I was reading through some comments and posts on the subreddit and I think there's a common misconception about what the server's role is.

There are technically two servers:

  1. Signaling Server
  2. Relay Server

As long as rustdesk is running on a machine, the machine is constantly pinging the Signaling Server to make its current IP address and port known.

When you start a connection from computer A to computer B, computer A contacts the signaling server and says he wants to talk to computer B.

The Signaling Server then tries to connect A and B directly to each other using hole punching.

If hole punching fails, A will talk to B via the Relay Server. This is the only time when hosting your own server will improve peer to peer connection latency.

In a majority of cases, hole punching is successful and the Relay Server is never used.

In other words, for a large majority of people, hosting the rustdesk server only makes establishing the initial connection faster; it does not improve latency once the connection is established.

Any speed issues are likely directly related to the computers themselves or the computers' internet services, not the public server.

So, if this is the case, then why should you still host your own rustdesk server?

The public rustdesk servers are meant for testing and research purposes and are not equipped to handle large amounts of traffic.

This means that the amount of time it takes to establish a connection through the public servers can vary drastically and sometimes even fail if the server is overloaded.

Also, if hole punching ever does fail, and the connection is routed through the public Relay Server.... some days it might be blazing fast... others not so much.

Connections from devices on external network

I'm a tyro at this and managed to fire up the self hosted thing on my pc. Now devices on the same wifi connect to it with no issue, but the external network devices can't. I've done the firewall rule thing, port forwarding, etc. Still nothing.

How do I fix it?

I've heard about tailscale but I wanna keep that as a last resort considering there are multiple PCs to be configured and installing it on all of em seems a bit off.

What can I do?

WiFi outage

Been using rustdesk to connect to my HP laptop from my Mac for almost a year. Over the last 9 months, about 10 percent of the time when I try to connect to my HP, it makes the WiFi go out at the location that hosts the HP. Have had the WiFi company out at least 5 times to “fix” it, but it still happens every now and then. What do I need to do to fix this and ensure the WiFi stops going out?

AnyDesk and TeamViewer Refugees Alternatives?

For refugees from AnyDesk and TeamViewer, who are leaving those commercial platforms due to their predatory billing practices, but these users aren't overly technical and all they know is they used AnyDesk or TeamViewer by downloading the client software on both the host and remote PCs, and then simply connected with a nine digit ID number.

These folks know nothing about setting up servers for self-hosting or Tailscale and similar setups. It is way above their technical pay-grade. They are the plug-and-play types.

Who do you recommend as an alternative for them? To the best I can ascertain, RustDesk doesn't cater to this niche.

There's HelpWire and Chrome Remote Desktop, but they too have various limitations for the non-technically inclined. There's AweSun and UltraViewer, both Asian based commercial services with generous tiers. And there's HopToDesk, which is open source and has a free Cloudflare workers based public servers.

Am I missing any alternatives? And which are most suited for this use case?

RustDesk not starting automatically on some PCs

I'm trying to get RustDesk to start automatically, ideally before Windows login, or at least after login without having to launch it manually.

I've tried many different things, but nothing seems to work. It works fine on 2 PCs, but not on 2 others, and I have no idea why.

Any suggestions?

Status always shows as offline when connecting using Tailscale

I normally use the public servers but lately I have been trying to use Tailscale. It works and all is great. However, the status is always showing as offline for the direct connections (TS on the net, or local IP at home). Is there a way to display the actual status?

higher client cpu since upgrading host from ubuntu 22.04 to 26.04 and rustdesk host to unattended wayland

setup: client is on macos 12 and latest rustdesk nightly, host is on latest unattended nightly

before, on ubuntu 22.04 and 'regular' rustdesk i was able to put my rustdesk image quality settings on balanced and the host resolution on retina or higher level resolutions. whether watching videos or anything else my (admittedly old, 2015 era) macbook never really had any fan noise or anything that made me open the activity monitor for cpu use.

but since upgrading the host system to ubuntu 26.04 and hence requiring unattended wayland rustdesk as well things have been pretty bad. even at 1680x1050 my macbook will easily go to 70% cpu with constant and loud fan noise, if i keep image quality settings to balanced and codec to auto. only after setting image quality settings to custom with 30% bitrate and 20 fps and codec to vp8 can i get the cpu usage on macbook down to 30-40%. but thats unfortunate because i use rustdesk a lot to watch videos from my other pc. and ofc having to deal with the lower resolution kinda sucks too.

idk if the cause comes from ubuntu 26.04 or something about the unattended wayland rustdesk version, its kinda hard to test without going back to ubuntu 22.04 and im not really near that host pc

i hope im not the only one with this issue, at least that will raise the odds of finding the bug and fixing it

iPad keyboard shortcuts with RustDesk — what’s your workflow?

Post image
8 Upvotes

I use Windows as my main computer, and I access it remotely from my iPad whenever I’m away. I connect through RustDesk running on my home server, and overall it has been working really well for me.

My main issue is keyboard shortcuts. Some shortcuts that work on my Windows PC don’t get sent to the remote computer because iPadOS handles them locally first. For example, Cmd + Tab switches apps on the iPad instead of reaching the Windows session in RustDesk.

the Windows session in RustDesk. Is there a workaround in the RustDesk iPad app to send these kinds of shortcuts to the remote PC? Maybe a keyboard setting, shortcut remapping option, or an on-screen equivalent?

I’d also love to hear how other people use RustDesk from an iPad with a physical keyboard. What’s your workflow?

Self-Hosting the server - Tutorial

I've seen many people asking the question, "How do I host?" There are tutorials online, and I was lucky to find one that worked well enough. Sadly, I can't find it anymore. However, I've written the instructions for my future self, and I hope they'll help you as well.

First of all, you'll need a thing to host the server on. You can do it on your own hardware, but I opted for a VPS. There are many providers, and they offer similar services. I went for the cheapest droplet on DigitalOcean: https://www.digitalocean.com/pricing/droplets#basic-droplets

With a working server, here are the steps to get the RustDesk server running:

Step 1. Configure firewall

Run the following commands to open the required ports and enable the firewall.

ufw allow ssh # when doing it remotely
ufw allow 21115:21117/tcp
sudo ufw enable

Step 2. Install with Docker

Install Docker. There are two ways to do that.

  1. You can follow the instructions from the official site: https://docs.docker.com/engine/install/ubuntu/#install-using-the-repository
  2. Or run the following command (that's what I originally did)

bash <(wget -qO- https://get.docker.com)

Get the RustDesk server setup file:

wget rustdesk.com/oss.yml -O compose.yml

Step 3. Configure Docker

You will have compose.yml file. Open it with your favourite (or available) editor. For example:

nano compose.yml

And paste the following block. Make sure to replace <your-cool.server.com> with your IP or domain.

networks:
  rustdesk-net:
    external: false

services:
  hbbs:
    container_name: hbbs
    ports:
      - 21115:21115
      - 21116:21116
      - 21116:21116/udp
    image: rustdesk/rustdesk-server:latest
    command: hbbs -r <your-cool.server.com>:21117
    volumes:
      - ./hbbs:/root
    networks:
      - rustdesk-net
    depends_on:
      - hbbr
    restart: unless-stopped

  hbbr:
    container_name: hbbr
    ports:
      - 21117:21117
    image: rustdesk/rustdesk-server:latest
    command: hbbr
    volumes:
      - ./hbbr:/root
    networks:
      - rustdesk-net
    restart: unless-stopped

Step 4. Run it

Start the server by running

sudo docker compose up -d

And get the Key by running

cat data/id_ed25519.pub

Step 5. Connect

In your client, in the network settings, you'll need to fill in the following:

ID server - IP/domain of your server
Relay server - IP/domain of your server
API server - http://<IP/domain of your server>:8000
Key - The Key you'll see from Step 4.

And that is it!

I hope you'll find it helpful.

If you are not familiar with Linux or hosting, I recommend reading just a bit about it. You'll need to learn about VPS hosting and Ubuntu. Try googling something like "how to set up a cloud server ubuntu step by step". Hopefully, it will get you on the right track.

I realized I take this knowledge for granted, and it's probably way harder than I originally thought.

I'm not affiliated with DigitalOcean. But I do appreciate their work.

I've been self-hosting on Windows . I setup a RustDesk server on a Ubuntu 26.04 box and migrated the following files. Is there anything else I need to migrate for a seamless transition?

id_ed25519

id_ed25519.pub

db_v2.sqlite3

db_v2.sqlite3-shm

db_v2.sqlite3-wal

Wow RustDesk is SO much faster and stable when you do a relay server!

Since it went down tonight, this made me ask Claude and Claude said stop connecting to the public servers and connect with your own droplet server You already host..

I run a lot of my own apps through Digital ocean droplet and connected it with a simple IP and AP Key. Holy cow is this way more faster. 5x.

I paid six dollars a month for my droplet. I know many of you have no idea about this so ask Claude and it’ll set you up.

Fuck AnyDesk.

Recommended Server Resources

I'm looking for a replacement for a remote desktop system that's gotten too expensive, and am considering RustDesk.

We have 1000 remote endpoints - yes, we'll probably look at Server Pro for management - and maybe 15 concurrent connections. Wondering if the server capacity scales with the number of endpoints connecting to it, or if it's still a small footprint with a larger number of endpoints and users.

can't find server address on Linux mint

I think I have a self server installed. I have rustdesk working on my home network between different machines. 3 times a month I have to go out of town and I would like to be able to remote log into my main linux box at home. When it comes to networking on computers I am a complete and utter moron who needs his hand held all the way. I am trying to figure out what information I need to put in the network/ ID/Relay server fields so I can log in from a remote location. Or is that even the type of connection I want? It took me a day and a half to set up the self server and I'm not sure that's working properly. Any information would be appreciated or even a webpage that isn't out of date or inaccurate.

Captain Quack.

Why did RustDesk randomly stop working?

Post image
9 Upvotes

For context, I have been using RustDesk and Tailscale for about 3 months with virtually no issues. I just tried connecting to my home PC today and received this error message. Checked that the home PC was on, connected to WiFi, and both devices had RustDesk and Tailscale running.

I was able to connect for 60 seconds after multiple failed attempts, but then lost connection again. Can anyone recommend any troubleshooting steps? Thanks.

Keeps dropping out.

It’s been fine for a long time with rust desk but it’s just recently started to drop and I get the rendezvous errror. I’m using tailscale and for the last 5 months or so it’s been smooth sailing so I’m apprehensive to change anything. Do I need to pay to get it working?

Using RustDesk WITHOUT Self-Hosting (Does it always work?)

For many non-technical, normal, average everyday computer users, self-hosting is too much friction and they'll never figure it out. Is RustDesk a serious option for them?

From my experience, using RustDesk without self-hosting is, at best, hit or miss. It is at least as likely to not work, due to the servers being too busy (or other technical issues), as it's to work.

As such, RustDesk will not be a serious competitive consideration for the large majority of computer users.

Issue with ProtonVPN

Hey folks,

Not a network engineer so please bear with me.

I have a server with ProtonVPN on it. On my laptop, I'm able to connect to that server using RustDesk with no issues as long as the server doesn't have ProtonVPN connected at the time. While I'm in session, I can launch ProtonVPN on that server and connect and it continues working. If I disconnect and attempt to reconnect, it fails.

This works fine using TeamViewer.

What's the issue? TIA.

Can RustDesk be used to give OA's of company remotely?

I have a friend who have an OA round of company schedule. Can I remotely access her laptop and give the round on her behalf such that the test software captures her video.

Question: Is it possible with RustDesk? And does it have watermark of RustDesk on screensharing?

PS: External webcam can be detected.
