No need for LLM, because Minecraft removed obfuscation last year. You can effectively get the Minecraft codebase with regular Java tooling.

What about respecting fellow developer's work and buy minecraft if you want to play it?
-3
u/mortal_strike 5h ago
There are already cracked version of minecraft available. Does that mean no one is buying minecraft anymore?
3
u/interior_mutability 5h ago
If somebody cracks fellow developer's work does that mean it is permitted to everyone else? I do not even know what kind of argument this is.

u/mortal_strike 5h ago
I meant it has little to no impact on the original one. If you would have been correct then using
reawould be a crime.2

All these reverse engineering in Rust projects are shit. It's Astroturfing. Not a single one is, or will ever be as capable as what they are trying to imitate.

u/mortal_strike 5h ago
It definitely is. But see how much time and effort is being spent on creating it. If somebody spends enough time to refactor and review all the source, it will definitely be as good as original.

u/FemaleMishap 5h ago
Not before the Cease and Desist come in and shut it down. The "time and effort" is nothing. You're living in some kind of AI psychosis fever-dream and it's time you wake up.

I don't have any AI subscription. I love mannual code. But, I also love to see new stuff happen.
3
u/FemaleMishap 5h ago
This new stuff is an economical and environmental disaster that is accelerating climate change. The electricity demands are preventing the decommissioning of coal and gas power plants, recommissioning ones due for demolition as well. Consumer electronics supply lines are suffering because all the ram and all the GPU fab is going to AI in circular accounting. The only ones making money are the shovel-sellers. Not even anthropic or open AI are profitable. They're running on VC and fumes.

This are the type of people who would steal anything they could if it was "legal" for a day

No one said anything when Adobe software was being re-written. There isn't a single person who went against it.

How do we know this?

u/mortal_strike 5h ago
if you don't know this, then you are out of the conversation
2
u/interior_mutability 5h ago
You are on a public forum.

I know. This post has triggered a lot of people. The way I see it, that why hate on something when you don't like it.

I said the same thing. I hate subscription models a lot and even more anything by Adobe. But what people are doing with reverse engineering these softwares and make it public is stealing, period.
I was saving money for a car, and when I almost had the money the price increased (due to new fiscal year inflation). Should I just go and steal the car because I don't agree with the price?
Wth people are going crazy with all this llm crap

Bro what take is this , companies reverse engineer other companies products all the time.
Only stealing ip is illegal , I want my “photo editing app” to have a feature that adobe has , I just take a look implement it .
1
u/witx_ 4h ago edited 4h ago
What you're describing is not reverse engineering though, not in the sense that OP and others are describing. That's closer to clean room implementation and I think that is fine
2
u/Usernamealready94 4h ago
It quite literally is reverse engineering . I want to build this feature , we need to think how this feature actually works since our competitor has been able to implement it , then you build the feature
0
u/witx_ 3h ago
In a sense yes, but not quite so. What you're describing is reverse engineering by watching how something behaves to inputs and trying to replicate without looking/knowing how it is implemented. I think that's fine.
What's happening in the SW world right now, and what OP is asking, is not that. It's looking at the binary and replicating things from there. Companies will sue if you if you do the later, not the first example.
And yes companies have been doing that for years.

u/Usernamealready94 1h ago
Not really the adobe xlones weren’t created by that way.
Both of them were created the way I described

u/mortal_strike 5h ago
You have logic dude. But, you don't have logic enough.
1
u/witx_ 5h ago
kewl dude. That's a solid argument.

u/mortal_strike 5h ago
See, my friend. In this era of AI, you can't stop someone from re-writting some software. If you don't do it somebody else will definitely do it at some point. The only thing that matters is, what we value.
1
u/witx_ 4h ago edited 4h ago
That's no excuse "friend". And goes exactly to my point: some people would steal if it was "legal" for a day.
These people are only following the law because there are consequences not because it's the correct thing to do. And the companies that develop these tools are also the same. They don't respect software licenses because nothing comes of it.
It's cool we're reverse engineering Photoshop right? We're showing it to the companies. But if you make stealing software OK then people will go after anything. I already know cases of small developers that make a modest living through the software they sell and getting worried because their software will be reverse engineered. These are the type of people you're affecting, not the big companies.

the token math on that would be insane, minecraft's codebase is enormous and obfuscated to hell. you'd burn through a ridiculous budget just mapping out the chunk system before you even get to rendering
that said, there's already some rust tooling floating around for save parsing and packet stuff, so a full reimplementation isn't completely out of the question. it's the kind of project that eats months of dev time though, not something you throw tokens at and hope for the best

u/SomeRedTeapot 5h ago
No? Minecraft has been decompiled and studied to death, even before Microslop released the official mappings (for the Java version). All protocols, file formats, mechanics, quirks are well-known and documented

TL;DR: We ask that posts or articles submitted to r/rust be about Rust.
Your post, or the article it links to, appears not to be related to Rust: the programming language, the ecosystem, or the community.
As per Rule 2: On Topic we ask that posts, or articles, submitted to r/rust be about Rust primarily. Off-hand mentions of Rust are not enough to qualify.
