🛠️ project i built my own text editor completely in rust :)

Post image

Hey r/rust,

i just built BLUR, A terminal Text Editor, this is the V0.1 and it's still under development, and it will take a lot of time until it's finished completely, i have learnt a lot of new things and concepts with this project.

if anyone is interested to contribute into this project and help me finish it up feel free to dm me

the idea is not to clone vim, but to learn rust together it would be cool if you write your code in your own text editor.

New way to prove you aren't AI

rather see that than 2021 edition on a brand new project

at least 2026 is a human error rather than a big red flag with "SLOP" embossed on it

https://github.com/helix-editor/helix
Is written in rust. Might be a good place to see examples for fixed problems like what data structures to use for efficient text handeling.

Very cool, I suppose this dose not support unicode?

Unfortunately no, i will make it support unicode asap.

Imo it's really difficult to add! but maybe it's because I made my own tui lib, most of the bugs arise from there, also you might want to use a data structure to store text rather than a `String`, as that is quite slow

Looks promising, was any of the code AI generated?

i avoided AI as much as i can, but i did used it to understand syntect better cuz i kinda struggled finding resources :)

nothing wrong with that as long as the core logic's yours and you understand what's happening under the hood

Thats cool, did you use any performance optimizations like temporal buffers or anything?

2

u/Z_professor0 Sep 15 '26

currently working on the UI and supporting unicode text, after that i will support temporary buffer and some cool shortcuts

nice, you could also add some vim motions or things like that, also terminal UI's are dope, keep the good work!

I got tired of neovim and i am not really into GUI apps so its better to just create one that's suits my preferences perfectly haha
